Unless I'm Missing Something...

well, the issues are too much time spent waiting for your turn and the problems that having too many people going in between your turns introduces

I however fully support spectators, good idea and i think it should be implemented (lets you watch the masters of the game play against each other)

i think spectators are a bad idea - all it takes is one spectator and a messenger to toatally ruin a game (spotting)

If a player misses somthing while he is playing, be it a silent kill or a missed shot, thats his problem. But as soon as you add spectators youll get people catching those errors for the player and thus ruining the opponents chance of a surprise attack.

More players per game isnt so bad. Worms pulled it off ok by reducing total squad numbers per extra player.

You could arrange it so that the spectators can't talk to the actual players. That way the players don't get annoyed/unfair advantages from any "boo, what a lame shot!" or "he's around the corner!" etc.

That way it would still be a normal game for the players, but the spectators can watch and learn :) (or have a silent laugh or whatever...)

Voller

Why are there only two players allowed in each server?

I can kinda' understand the one on one only gameplay, (although 2v2 and beyond would be great) but why can't there be at the very least spectators?

Besides the coding work (and there aren't many programmers and they are busy with more pressing matters), there is the question of cheating raised by Sporb.

If you want to watch games you can always see the replays (although they are not working at the moment because of a bug). Also, players might not want to reveal their tactics.

Exactly, divide K points

If that could be optional, it'd be great. That way if several friends want to spectate and play a less serious game, they'd have the choice to allow chatting.

However, let me point out that allowing 4 players / maybe teams involves MAJOR changes to the engine... not devs have time for this before 0.8, maybe we could work on this after 0.8

Spectators would be more simple but involve cheating flaws...

Even if you mute the chat for spectators, you have no control over Teamspeak / msn / whatever.

Thats the point. Adding spectators or only allowing them to join is a point of cheating.

Dont misunderstand me, i love spectators or to be one, but i have a vision: two player will have a game, they do not know each other (they first met in server chat) and they allow spectators to join. Now the spectator isnt allow to chat because of cheating, but where's the problem? Right, one player and the spec are in a voice chat. =p

The next point is, that it would be great, if a spec (or a replay-watcher) can be focused on the focus of the player (this will need some more packets in multiplay, i know). But i think its hard to follow a replay. This is similar to spectators. :D

And the next point is, spectators could simplify the development of AIs. Since I can see, what the AI is doing I can understand and improve it. (for developers purposes) =b

To more players:

I think more players would be great, but waiting for 3 other players is bad and hard. So the suggestion of reducing the maximum amount soldiers would be great. I had a look into source and know, that more than two players will need hard changes to the engine. OMG

But think of the possibilites: Perhaps combined with some scenarios/game mods it could be a new episode of fun. Think of assassination. Two teams each with two players could give them a new flavor: One of a team will defend both leaders of the team and the other can attack ^_^

Anyways there should be a way to make a semi-parallel movement when more players wil be added.

what about putting a small delay on the spectators....have the spectators a turn or 2 behind would make it pretty much imposible to cheat because they would be watching the past. And an option to not allow spectators would protect tactical secrets from prying eyes.

An interesting idea, but if the spectation doesn't even happen in real-time, then wouldn't it be almost as good just to have the server save the replays from each match and have them downloadable on the results page for a few days? This should probably be easier to implement too. Plus you wouldn't need to be there at the exact right time to see a match. :)

The problem with replay files downloadable is that the beta changes constantly, and when the version changes, there may or may not be a major impact resulting. Replays rely on the game to form the 'actual' situation, and think what would happen if the default weaponset or any type of tactical feature was changed, you will result in errors. Once we have a new stable released with all the beta features, it will then open doors for such a thing. But until then, we cannot unless we want people crowding and asking why it isn't working over and over. We don't want to assume it's a change in version, it could lead to bugs that we didn't know about and are just skimmed over.

As for spectating, we "could" make it so that we block users from the same IP into the game, but I am sure some joker is willing to have a router AND a modem, giving seperate IPs at once. So that would be a risk, however, small.

You can watch replays from the server right now (this needs to be added to the readme files).

Just type while on the channel: getreplay(game number, check it on the results page).

You will not see everything (it shows what the players see during WATCH mode) but you can save it at the end as a replay.

This only works if you are running the same version and have the same weapons/terrain installed.
