Sectopods And Cyberdiscs

I don’t know if this has already been talked about but I just thought I’d say it.

What if you could manufacture the Sectopods and cyberdiscs? After you have captured one or found a smart sectoid.

You could use the ideas from the cyberdisc to enhance tanks or maybe they could be a prerequsit to the plasma hover tank or something.

I don’t know, I hade to much schoolwork on my hands in the last three weeks.

Am I making any sense here?

This should probably be moved to the lab.

Personally, I would rather have a human equivelent to the sectopod instead of a straight copy.

Also, I am opposed to having cyberdisc being a prerequisite for anything, because what happens if you aren't lucky and get a sectoid terror site?

Then you drop a sectoid battleship or terroship and get it there..

I like the idea of making research tree a bit more complicated, a little bit like tftd had but without bugs ^_^

I'm for multiple research paths like this as long as they are numerous as to not have to rely on a certain technology to stand a chance, for instance in UFO without Psi you are royally buggered. Sorta like it may not be possible to get every technology if you want to complete the game, but if a lot of time is spent on capturing aliens and technology then you have more advancements. It would let players have different research paths for different games if their uses are varied enough. Like if you use tanks a lot you try and get the research for advanced tanks, but you wouldn't bother if you don't use them.

Sounds interesting, on how early game is it possible to research "cydonia or bust" and get there? First month and with rifles "bang bang bang" ? :P

I think you would have to first figure out where cydonia is, what it is and solve the propulsion problems to get there in a reasonable amount of time.

I think what Jim was saying is that nothing out of the ordinary would be available at the beginning and there would still be set paths to follow, but the paths would be more numerous and there would be more than one way to get to cydonia or bust.

Sort of; what I was saying is that say there is a new research path to update the tanks it needs another research path to upgrade something like the armour, or the weapons so that someone need not research everything to be able to have a good crack at Cydonia, in X-Com if you didn't research Psi you had little chance, what I am saying is what if a player doesn't like Psi? There should be an alternative, such as Tanks. However since you can't take loads of tanks and loads of units you have to make a judgement call depending on whatever strategy you decide to use. What I am saying is just don't have tanks upgradable because it forces the player to use tank tactics because they are really strong, exactly the way the player was forced to use Psi whether they liked it or not to be able to fight effectively. Needs some consideration I think, but there is plenty of time before 1.0 comes out anyway.

And J! I know! But what other way than capturing a commander of any species?

By get a certain sort of alien ship undamaged .... put soldiers in it and go to cedonia with a automatic "return home" system...

it would be great to be able to use an alien ship .... once all the researchs(probably a lot) are done

Hmm... like in any good civ-game: the diplomatic option: we offer a treaty of co-existence and the aliens accept (of course, they have to be losing pretty badly before they do :naughty: ) :D

Or the trade victrory: you just capture THAT much equipment and sell it to the other nations, so every army is equipped with the latest alien tech and alien attacks become about as irritating as a mosquito :)

Then again, maybe not :P

As far as I know, you can't capture sectopods/cyberdisks alive. In my version, you can only get their entries from a medic.

This fact is beside the point. The point is, if you can acquire the relevant information, should x-com then use this information to clone these things, build hybrid technologies based on these things or just say, “oh, great, now we know everything about a telepathically controlled, bipedal robot with its own independent E-115 power source, a small but developed AI and inbuilt plasma cannon … anyone want bear and toast?”

This idea of advanced sectopod research might tie in nicely with the thread concept of mecha battlesuits and advanced HWP. There are a few other threads that talk about alternate research trees, you could tie this in as well.

I think this topic has been sort of touched on whith the chrysalid reserach path threads. As I've suggested before, capturing live sectopods, chrysalids, and certain aliens can give you technologies to better defeat the enemies, but shouldn't be essential to finishing the game.

I also like the idea of different ways of defeating the aliens, but killing cydonia should still be the most rewarding ending.

Yep, me too... I thought cyberdisks were even immune to stun damage... (not sure about sectopods though), but why would a MEDIC know more about those than an engineer!! :D

Well, technically Heavy Plasmas, Psi, or Power Suits aren't essiential... They just make the game a whole lot easier. :)

Exactly... I think someone actually made it through Cydonia with nothing but lasers and Personal armors, but hey, he was a Loadaholic...

('im in desintox m'self) ^_^
