Crash On Start-up

Hello Jenny,

I can't seem to get your editor to run on my machine. I copied the exe and dll to the xcom directory. When I run it I do get a window but then the program immeadiatly crashes (bringing up the Window's report this problem window)

It's version 0.701 of your program. I'm running the old school DOS Xcom, and I believe it is at version 1.4. I also have XcomUtil installed, and a few modifications I have as well (but shouldn't affect your program, they deal with the aliens). Only thing that might add to this is that I do have my soldiers named for their stats in a manner different to yours.

Let me know if you need anything else.

This editor is only for the CE (Collector's Edition) of X-COM, not DOS. Since the executable is merged in the windows version, the editor can't find it. (Even if you did merge your Geoscape and Tactical executables together, the offsets would not match the CE). I haven't tried this editor on the DOS version yet, but the other editor functions should work (soldier, bases and weapons). Jenny is considering support for DOS users in the future though. :)

Have you tried downloading a fresh version from Jenny's website and try running it again. Sometimes rars can get corrupted when you unzip them.

Are you using DosBox to run the game? If so, don't run the editor through DosBox. Just double click on the icon and it should go fine. Other than that, I don't know. :(

Just tried the new version (0.7 from 1/10/2007) still no dice. I get a window and then it just crashes like before.

I do run the game through DOSBox, but didn't run the editor through it. In fact when I just tried it I simply get 'this program cannot be run in MS-DOS mode'.

My machine is a bit old, Pentium 4 1.8 GHz, 1 GB of RAMBUS RAM. XP SP2.

Just a random thought, but the files are located on a RAID 0 array. I only mention this because when I fooled with parsing data files with Python on it, it likes to start you in the middle of the file and I had to explicitly tell it to go to the beginning.

At any rate don't be discouraged. I'm not dying to use this program, but merely helping you test it out.

It should work fine with the DOS version, but a few things should be disabled (and popups will tell you this). It shouldn't not crash, though.

It's hard to say what exactly is causing the crash. But seeing as it's an OpenGL based application, I'd say the first thing to check is whether or not your machine supports OpenGL correctly? No driver issues or anything?

I'm pretty sure I run OpenGL programs without much of a problem. I'll download the newest Omega video drivers. I'm surprised it still supports my ancient Radeon 9500. It has to have been a year since I've updated these drivers.

I think I usually use DirectX when I can for programs that support both. Seems to run faster on this machine. (Though old drivers probably don't help either)

I wish I could help, but I honestly have no idea what could cause this if you're using the correct drivers. Especially since there doesn't seem to be a real error message.

Let me know how it works out with those Omega drivers, though.

Well I'm having the same problem...although I note the last post was eight months ago...sigh...

Anyway, the only difference is that I'm using x-comutility thingy, and I have installed the other editor from here that does many similar things, so my x-com directory has a million files in it.

I copied and pasted the editor into the x-com directory and it crashes just like the first poter described. However when I simply started the editor outside this directory it worked fine...just that there were no files to edit. I could probably chalk it up to my previous editing jobs or something, but I just thought I'd let you know.

At a guess, your data files are (wildly) different from what the program expects, and it crashes at some point. It's hard to tell where exactly, of course. I'll take a look at the code when I have time. It does surprise me that it crashes immediately upon start-up, though - are you using CE?

I am using CE and it crashed on startup for me.

I have this problem too. I'm running 1.4 DOS with the Combo patch by zombie and bomb bloke. I've also used xcomutil to fix the difficulty bug and I think maybe the base disjoint bug. I remember doing a lot of experimenting to prevent any other changes though so I think that's the extent of it.

I know the file I've downloaded is good because if I drop it onto my desktop (i.e. separated from xcom) it runs fine and tells me it cant find xcom ce. so it must be a file incompatibility thing.

I know this is an old tread but as the problem is still around, I thought it best to update this.

Fudge, could you try the latest version (make sure you replace the engine.dll as well) and see if it still produces the same error? And if it still does, could you try the following for me:

Move or rename all of the GAME_x directories in your xcom directory (my editor reads data from them as it starts up) and see if that changes anything.

There was a problem in older versions of my editor with long savegame names, but it's been fixed in recent versions.
