This thread is for storing reference pics of real mall shops, so we can make textures and models based off of them. Please refer any comments or suggestions to this thread.

Here's a high end jewelry shop:

This pic I found on the Internet, but when I went in person to take pictures, I made sure to ask permissions first. About half said no, likely thinking I was the competition trying to spy on them. Didn't matter that I told them what it was for. If I had just taken the shots without asking, I probably would have been escorted out of the mall or arrested, and the camera taken as well. Much easier just to conceal the camera and not use a flash, or as was suggested to me, use a cell phone camera.

I have an idea! Get couple of your buddys and put them in front of the shop/place in question and take a shot, only just aling it so that it seems that you are taking of your friends, but you are actually taking a shot of the shop.

Or if you have a digi camera, just conseal your camera somehow and take some "drive-by shots." :naughty: Good idea's, eh?

Anything visible from public property is considered (oddly enough) public. So if you're standing naked in your living room but people can see you from the street it's indecent exposure. Therefore pictures of scenes visible from public areas are public and as such okay to photograph. That should get you /some/.

The problem is that it must be public property, which a mall is not. It's privately owned. I had thought about taking pics with my wife like you mentioned Aosar, but that's a hassle to do. I think turning off the flash and taking concealed shots is simpler, so long as you're not caught...

On a related note, I remember reading a news story where a guy was found innocent for taking up-skirt pics in a mall, the court said based on the local laws there was no guarantee of privacy, so having a camera on your shoe was fair game. Needless to say, the next day the city council revised the rules to make it illegal.

You should be allowed to take pics outside stores without much trouble, just be careful inside them. I prefer to ask permission.

What we could really use, are good pics of shelves holding merchandise, so we can make textures from them. Durable goods, folded clothing, hanging clothes, all that. It's easy enough to make layouts, having textures half done will be handy though.

I have digital camera too so I'll try to get some good pictures.

Hey, I just got an idea!

Maybe we could establish contact with some of these Mall chains or specific stores itself and ask them for sponsorship!!!

We include their real logos and promotional stuff in terror mission and not only will they let us take pictures, but we would be provided Mall blueprint!

This way quite some money could be gained, wich could somehow be used to speed up Xenocide project!

And yes, I just began wondering, will V1 be simply freeware since it is an open source project or how do these things work??? (or is it a stupid question...) :hammer:

Anyway, the money could be given to charity, this would be a unique happening all over the world, so all the news would talk about it, and the project will become famous and historical (wich will be one way or another) !!! :D

P.S. And yeah, we would need a new department!

We can sell opensource software all we like actually, we just can't hide the sourcecode from public view. So anybody can download it for free, but those who want a CD or print manual mailed to them could buy a copy. Anybody can offer such a service.

As to sponsors, most want control of production if they give money, and I doubt a mall will give cash to a game that maybe a few dozen locals might play. Besides, there are tons of mall layouts available online, I ran out of time for this mall project though, so it's out there for anybody to pick up. Consider the various legal agreements and others hassles like that, and it's just not worth it. Not only is the mall needed to approve, but also every merchant and even every product you might see. Thus everything must be generic or fake. These pics above were mostly for easy reference or inspiration if somone wanted to make 3D props.

Yeah, that's true, they would definitely want to have their thumb on the project...
It was just a thought how to enhance the project speed, yet on the other hand it is worth waiting no matter how long!

It's not gonna be good, it's gonna be the best!
I am sure Xenocide will overcome it's "teacher" good old UFO, on wich memory shall live ever after...
