Ranking System

Guys, I am in need of your expertise.

According to the game's manual, there is a certain number of ranks per each low rank. Meaning, you get one squad leader when there are 5 squaddies, one captain when there are 3 sergeants, etc.

Now the problem is that I'm stuck at having 2 captains, and nobody has been promoted for many missions... :cussing:

How can I get a colonel and then a commander? Should i recruit like crazy as many soldiers as I can get? Will that change anything at all?

For someone to be promoted, do you need in the same mission a certain number of lower ranked guys, or is it sufficient that they are hired? Cause I can't see a way to put more than 30 guys in one mission...

Or should I do lame missions with the rookies and squaddies to try to get them higher, and then do other missions with the real troops?

I think the ranking system sucks a bit --- it should allow promotions by shear number of battles and kills of a soldier. This crap of needing to have like 60 hired soldiers that are never used is not good planning. :crying:

You have to recruit a certain number in order to get a colonel or a commander (there can only be ONE commander), so build bases and recruit defenders for them ^_^ , that way you'll get enough soldiers sometime (I can't remember how many you need exactly, maybe like 40-50 for a commander, 30 for a each colonel)

Yeah, I guess there is no way but to fill up all my bases with worthless recruits. What is also curious is that I got my colonels with a lower number of people than what the manual said I'd need. :spank:

So probably the game takes more into account than what's listed in the manual and also what's in all the internet FAQs I could find. I'm gonna try to just recruit like crazy and I'll post again if I'm able to get to a commander :huh?:

i know you need alot of soldeirs but should those recruits stay r00ks to make the commander

or

those r00ks must turn squadies to make the colonel a commander???

Having 100 rookies is as good as having 100 squaddies, their rank does not matter (it's quantity that matters, not quality :D )

Damn it. And all my life i've been thinking that quality is better than quantity! :huh?:

Nothing like x-com to learn live lessons, hum?

PS: and i've just made Captain with my 21st post! woowoo! :birthday:

This was very interesting! I had no idea that you'll need that many soldiers as "cannonfodder" to promote your real soldiers.

I have to be honest, I don't care. I have 2 groups of real soldiers, 6/6 men and woman. 2 androids as guards for my "Fab&Research" base. That's it.

Is the difference between captain and commander or colonel that big? What exactly are the differences?

i have an answer for that!

uhm.. :huh?:  . The Morale of the troops!!

i think in Ufo if the commander dies the morale falls pretty bad.

i guess its the same in Apoc..

but in the other way. im like you, max i got was Sarg. i dont ask more, i only ask my soldiers to excecute the orders !

the ranking system doesn't have any advantage... but if u lose high rank officer morale drops badly.

i always finish the game with small squads. my every man has +200 kills but the highest is sergeant. but i've seen commanders with 30-40 kills

So there is no point in actually having a Commander if he doesnt actually do anything?

I think the highest i have so far is Squad Leader, but I only just started so there is time yet.

I always believed higher ranking officers gave morale bonuses to your other troops, so as long as they lived your other soldiers would be less likely to panic and such. I don't know this for sure though, but it would make some sense. The other way around definitely is true, losing a higher ranking officer incurs a greater morale penalty to your other soldiers than losing a rookie.

I'm like my friend Mark0... I'm for kills, not rank.

There is nothing boosting morale more than burning aliens running around the corner, screaming when they see me reloading my IN ammo Auto Cannon. :flame: :psychosanta:

This ranking thing was very interesting, I never really understood it. :)

Actually that is not true. Higher ranking improves the morale of your troops, as is clearly stated in the manual and in the best internet FAQs you can find on X-Com.

Not only that, but it's a great way to keep track of which soldiers have been with you the longest and which ones are recent additions. Last, your soldiers get some really nice insignias :)

Of course I also agree that there is no point to raise ranks just for the sake of it. But it's nice to see your soldiers getting promoted as they do more and more missions. My only colonel has about 100 kills and 100 days of service. He has all the 5 medals a soldier can get and his stats are almost max'ed. Some of my sergeants also have the stats near max. I'll try to grab a screenshot and post it later

What are those medals for anyway? I mean, you get them for doing what exactly? I always thought: "cool, a medal, but why did I get it??"

It's the same system that the real army uses. Meaning, you get medals for getting hurt in battle, for enduring many missions, etc. But I don't know the specific details - they're not listed in the manual or anywhere. I'm guessing there are specific events that will grant medals, but it's hard to determine them.

Next time I start a game I'll try to keep a better track of when my men get medals ^_^

Your soldier equip screen, next to the portrait of your soldier there should be an arrow, when you click that one, the stat screen is replaced by one displaying your kil... Err burns, and medals. Edited by j'ordos

If anyone is interested in seeing all my eq / ships / etc I can try to upload a savefile...

The reason why I don't work on their psi abilities is that I never get anyone controlled. When I see psymorphs I kill them on the spot or stun them - they never got a chance to fight back. Of course, this is in the lower difficulty level. I'm now playing another game at the hard level and I don't know yet how it will work out... <_<

These guys are actually from the game I had been playing about a year ago, in my old pc. Only now that I got it to work on win2k I'm being able to start a new game in a decent difficulty hehehe

Hey cool, my fellow XCOM warriors. Thanks for telling me where I can see my "burns".. I NEVER clicked on the arrow! :D

I'm with Fafnir about the Psi thing. I burn them away so fast, they can't even "think about PSI attacking me"... :psychosanta: And I play in superhuman level...

PSI is useless in Apocalypse (for the aliens) - I never really tried to use it with my soldiers.

I have to check what rank my soldiers are, I have no idea!

When do you start to get hybrids, and how cna you tell that they are one?

You can easily tell by their faces (they will look sorta alien), and also by their relatively high psi stats. When seeing the list of soldiers to recruit, hybrids will have higher psi strength, psi defense, and psi attack than human soldiers. You need to be in at least neutral standing with the hybrid community, meaning, the "mutant alliance" organization or no hybrids will be available to recruit. I'm including a snapshot of a rookie hybrid and one that has been through intensive psi training :whip:

Usually they should become available very early in the game (like 1 to 2 weeks). If they don't, check your relation with mutant alliance.

An update on the ranking sytem: I'm currently at 100 soldiers and I've found this to be the maximum you can recruit at one time - for several days no rookies at all show up for recruiting.

Still, I have NO COMMANDER!!! :crying: I am starting to believe that it is not sufficient to keep many rookies, but instead you must get them to Squad Leader in order to allow higher ranking positions to become available. I'm at 1 colonel, 4 captains, 14 sergeants, 59 squad leaders and 22 rookies/squaddies. I'm going to try to level up a few more squaddies to squad leaders and I'll let you guys know if that is sufficient to get me a commander :cussing:

So the faces and the psi stats are the only way to tell? I was assuming there would be some more concrete way. Maybe I have a mutant in my midst and dont know it! :o

Look at those faces and see if you don't think it's pretty obvious they are mutants :hammer:

  • 1 year later...

Actually, the # of rookies you have has no direct effect on commanders or colonals. With enough combat points (???), they turn into squaddies. When you have 5 squaddies, the next rookie to be promoted get promoted to squad leader. This process repeats by 2's and 3's, through sergeant and captain, until it reaches colonal. If you have (or would have had) 3 colonals, and there is no commander, the best colonal gets promoted. It's all in the manual. If you want a commander, colonals are the only thing that matter. Until you get them, however, captains are, and so on. It doesn't matter if all your captains and down are dead (or incinerated :devillaugh: ), if you have 3 colonals, one of them becomes a commander. That would be cool to see. The last surviving agents in Mega-Primus. . .a commander and 2 colonals. . .THE EXECUTIVE SQUAD!

When the rookies are gone. . .and the squaddies have all left. . .whom do you call. . .THE EXECUTIVE SQUAD!

The best of the trash heap. . .completely inexpendable. . .Ping! Pow! Pew! Tsew! :crying: AHHHH! :crying: :crying:

Unfortunately for them! MUA-HA-HA-HA-HA!

The Supreme Commander when he discovers Mega-P has fallen and the Executive Squad is no more---> :crying:

The Supreme Commander when he finally gets hold of the Section Commander---> :spank:

An innocent bistander watching all this---> :huh?:

A Psimorph psionically watching all this thru the eyes of the previously proclaimed "innocent" bistander---> :happybanana:

And, of course, my reaction---> :naughty:
