Can't Get Into Tactical Mode

So I was cleaning out the back of my closet(havent been able to see the floor in years) when I happened upon X-com apoc. Naturally I remembered playing it around 5-6 years back and popped it in my PC for some deja-vu. My PC would not read the disk, I thought since I have nothing else to do today(thought the closet would have taken longer ) I might as well download the game. So after 3-4 hours of rummaging around sites I finally get x-com to work on XP(thx to this site ). So I was poking around and there is a report of an infestation, I send my little people over ASAP and they all get run over by a motorcycle. I started a new game and sent them in an APC but when i finally get there, i click the investigate button and you get that awsome poster loading 'Don't get hurt'. And then the screen goes black, i reloaded, trying another building, same thing. I tried around 8 buildings and everytime I try to get someone to do something(investigate, raid) I cannot get into the tactical mode, save for one time where my guy walked in and stunned everyone. Please help

I think if you turn the sound off on the game it works(worked for me)

Turning off sound doesn't do it for me.

It's so annoying, when I played it a couple of days ago it was working perfectly!

Now nothing has changed as far as I know and it crashes to desktop when trying to load a tactical mission.

try making a \scenarios\ subdirectory.
