#1 - Rookies Of Normandy

Yesterday I played Kratos using only conventional weapons and non-armoured soldiers (is there a camo graphic mod btw?), me being the attacking party for the first time.

After gettting off the landing ships, two squads of 4 and 5 soldiers moved forward over the flanks, two rocket launchers and two HC/INs were bombarding the fortifications. Each were supported by one "rollie" who kept running back and forth collecting ammo the squad members had brought into battle and throwing it to the artillery teams.

It really felt like conducting an invasion. :)

The enemy reacted by throwing a line of high explosives all across the beach, but not on the sides. Being too confident after a successful retaliating rocket barrage, I realized too late that those explosives (which didn't go off at first) were meant to send me to the flanks. - As team alpha was hit by several expolsives and obliterated.

The other side also made contact, with losses on both sides. After some fighting, the depleted support teams picket up their dead comrades' weapons and joined them, thus outnumbering the enemy.

- And if Kratos hadn't blown up several of his men toying with the fuel barrels bfore, it would have been a tight endgame. But most of all, it was fun! :)

#2 - Rain of Fire

The first match with the official release of the map, I played against abyssion. Given the same conditions of conventional/no armor, we both chose our teams.

In the first turn, it turned out that he had brought a LOT of AC/INs, because he simply RAINED heck on the entire coastline every turn.

Running for cover in the bunkers and trenches, my men couldn't even react at first.

Several unlucky privates went down in the onslaught, and rockets and HCs fired at the attackers' supposed locations failed to kill anything but one or two of the unseen army, and one of the fainter soldiers eventually panicked.

It was some turns before some brave scout (rigged with proxies and HE *g*) dashed through the constant smokescreen to see the invaders standing spread over the coast, ALL carrying HCs - and they were SECTOIDS!

Uncovered and hit by the now aimed return fire of my angered men, and running out of ammo, the aliens decided to charge. In the fight that ensued, thee were losses on both sides until both partys had only three men left.

My rocket launcher was hit by extraordinarily quick reaction fire of its intended target and killed o the spot. The sniper on the tower fired his last shot in retailiation but missed. The now second soldier left was the HC ammo rollie, which had no weapons either.

Having two unarmed men against a majority with autocannons, they ran to hide in the trenches and desperately looked for some weapons. The sniper made his way to the beach, hoping to find something there and maybe catch the enemy from behind. He found and took the gun of a fallen comrade, while the girl made a desperate dash across the open to get a knife dropped there. She hid behind a rock, and luckily caught a glimpse of a sectoid entering an underground tunnel at some distance. Having nothing to lose, she made another dash for the entrance and slipped in behind him. There were some tense moments as she followed the sectoid in sight, always fearing that he would turn around. But he didn't, and when he eventually stopped to level at a small hut back on the surface, she sneaked up on him and stabbed him in the back.

Meanwhile, the sniper had come back to join her. Slowly proceeding across the terrain, they sought out the enemy, anxious about every unseen trench or corner in the complex terrain. Finally the sniper spotted one enemy, who was appearantly expecting him too. What he didn't expect, though, was to be hit by his dead fellow's autocannon, at which he met his end.

The last soldier, even though there were reports of another, was never discovered. There were no more signs of enemy actions, so the invasion was presumed stopped (connection lost).

But who knows where that last Sectoid is hiding and scheming until today.... ;)

Not UFO2000 related but XCOM:UFO. But still quite good.

Chrysalid Evil

There were 8 of them. All with personal armour, all with plasma rifles. 4 made their way up the road, the others went to explore a house. They killed a few snakemen, and that was fine, although they were running a bit low on ammo. But that was no matter, the skyranger was only a blocks back.

Then they came.

A civilian lumbered towards the sergeant. Fine. Then it turned into a weird alien and slashed at a rookie, who turned into a zombie. The Sergeant blasted them both to death, and grabbed a corpse to take home for the R&D boys. Suddenly, another 2 chrysalids bounded towards them, coming right up to the sergeant. Fortunately, only one more in that detachment were zombified, and he was a rookie. Another would have got the sarge, were it not for a plucky rookie who was exploring a petrol station and snapped off a few autoshots at it, running forwards to assist.

Meanwhile, the other detachment, who had lost a man to snakeman fire and had had another one stunned, were pulling back to the skyranger, one of them with the stunned guy in their left hand and a plasma rifle in the other. They rushed to assist the team.

But they couldn't. Everyone panicked, threw down their weapons and the stunned guy and ran back towards the skyranger, pursued by the chrysalids. When they came to their senses, only one of them had a weapon, which was a plasma pistol he had stowed in his belt. He covered them, snapping off a few shots at the oncoming chrysalids as they bundled back into the skyranger, where the reserve weapons were.

Everyone picked up a fresh plasma rifle and one guy took the heavy plasma, when they remembered they had left a comrade in the field. One guy grabbed an extra plasma rifle and a medikit and ran out, covered by the other three. He ran over to the stunned man and began to try and revive him with stimulants. Still the chrysalids came. One man was zombiefied on the ramp, another stunned him and threw the body out of the plane. The two remaining men were being overcome, when some plasma blasts came from behind the chrysalids. The two men cut a swathe through the chrysalids, dived into the plane, and they took off.

Heres one i found most depressing. completed battles against hobbes.

Me Vs hobbes , full complement of my best men on modified city.

the game was very close in the end , i think somthing like 1 - 3 in hobbe's favour. needless to say i got killed.

2nd game , similar setup on farm - hobbes Kazi sectoids took out 3 or four of my men in one go. the rest got smooshed by AC fire from afar. i killed maybe one of his men <_ before my last soldier went down.>

3rd game , my team of aliens and humans on industrial. in the end Hobbes still had more than half his original team on hand.

4th game , my muton team , lead by Muton dave , took on hobbes mixed squad. this one was pretty close , but i was way outflanked and killed. dang fog <_>

One day i will beat you hobbes

Myself VS Neuron (

out of the maybe 10 games weve played , it's always been spilt right down the middle. The battles are always gripping and action packed , man for man on several occasions.

:huh?: maybe one of my battle is worth telling u about:

The sky was crying and the air was too heavy to breath. Skyranger left my secret base and flew towards the red spot on the radar.

"Hey commander Neithan, they are hiding in that city," shouted the navigator. Skyranger landed near and the squad marched out ready to face the enemy. Then the frst thing happened... OMFG

"Down, down, a rocket," screamed sergeant. "Sergeant, what happened there?" was the question commander asked. "Enemy is trying to blow up our defense, this time it was only a house and nobody was hurt." answered sergeant, "but next time it could be much worst!"

Scout on the left flank spotted the enemys rocket man. Ah so Kratos brought his power suite team <_<. Unfortunately killing this soldier uncovered 4 of my men. Kratos took advantage of this mistake and on his round he blown up 5 or 6 of my precious squad...it was a deadly turn for me :crying1: . Since this moment the boths sides were the same number, but not the same strenght (Kratos had power suites and better weapons  ).

The battle was not going as i expected and at the end i was slightly outnumbered. 5 men on my 3 men :blink2: . It was time for my team to fall back... Kratos underestimated the situation and my sectan who was hiding in ruines of the hous took out his last 3 men... :devillaugh:

Skyranger took the air and returned to the base...

If you want to see antimatter, face me in the beta, you'll be sorry you even asked for it, i won't even bother with anything but antimatter and beam blades :devillaugh:

i don't like using too much anti-matter normally, but i'll fight anyone but kratos with all anti-matter, i want to face kratos with weapons on the same scale

The only time I ever beat abyssion was with antimatter. I just camped and sprayed the area with explosive ammo. His last guy was hiding in a sniper tower in area 51.

What are you talking about Blood Angel? You never beat me yet. :huh?:

Please don't spread untrue rumors. <_<

It seems someone plays under your name :OhBrother: ...this is not the first time somebody claims victory on you

I see no record of Abyssion losing to Blood Angel. Do you care to explain why you said an untrue statement Blood Angel?

Was I going to win one?

I was fighting someone who I don't remember the name of because it was long ago. In a 10 on 10 all weapons all armor fight. I had my squad of mutons named after forum members and he had his units named Sectoid Navigator Sectoid Medic and so on. We were playing in forest which was two large hills on both sides and a kind of trench in the middle with plenty of cover.

It started with me seeing three sectoids already. My snipers mikker and blehm moved near to the top of the hill and fired heavy plasmas. blehm killed 1 and mikker killed 2.

The guy was pissed and said if I stayed hidden he'd leave.

So I moved everyone else around. stewart and Abyssion were in the trench after throwing their high explosives. End Turn

The guy rushes ALL the sectoids in a nice little clump at the side of the map. End Turn

stewart fires a large rocket and hits killing 6 (yes 6) sectoids.

The other just says :o

The smoke keeps me from seeing the last one. End Turn. The sectoid runs across the map to the corner and hides behind a bush.

mikker, blehm, Abyssion, and Azrael surround the bush not enough TUs. End Turn.

"Dude just throw a grenade"

And then he quit.

Heh.

With 7 sectoids in one place, even an auto-firing plasma pistol would do. :)

Btw I once tried having 15 ppl with them, and then doing 4 auto-shots each at the beginning of the match (in arctic).

Didn't hit much, but his morale was certainly lower after 180 incoming shots. *g*

The first test game of the Alien Crypt map I played against Nappes. As expcted, the indestructible maze structure results in yet another playing style than the paintball field.

There is a real "enemy behind every corner" feel to it - and more than often, that feeling proves to be right. ;)

But apart from the map itself, there was a funny twist at the end that I considered worth a story:

Rescue Rookies

They were a full roster of 15 soldiers. They knew, however, that the enemy was almost of equal number, and hiding somewhere at the other side of this strange alien maze.

The direct way thee was blocked by some central complex, so squad alpha decided to move to the north, while beta planned to enter it from the south and investigate. Gamma squad used the amazing alien antigrav-field to go back to the surface, in order to locate the entrance the enemy used, and maybe catch them from behind.

Beta squad soon made contact with the enemy, and a firefight ensued all around a great hall with many pillars. A guard in a side corridor caught enemies trying to sneak around by surprise, and was able to warn the others before falling to superior numbers.

Already close to the supposed enemy etrance point, Alpha squad found the area surprisingly calm and empty, so they placed some guards and started investigating the central chamber.

As Gamma made their way over the surface, where they felt rather exposed in comparision to the claustophobic crypt, they too did not see any enemy - until they they were in sight of the lift, where an alert scout spotted them. And a fight for the lift began.

In the meantime, the enemy in the south seemed to have retreated. One had been hit by a stun bomb and was taken to the central room, which was considered the safest place in the area.

But then Alpha's guards in the north were attacked by a full enemy squad, supported by power armours, and overrun. They came to rescue their sleeping comrade!

With the four remaining Beta soldiers advancing on the enemy lift on the west edge of the area, and Gamma still slowly and carefully closing in on it, there were but two soldiers left with the prisoner, with two others and two power armours incoming.

To make things worse, Alpha's sniper, who was guarding the unconscious body at tbe bottom of the sarcophagus, got so nervous she fired at the first enemy in sight, forgetting about the wall in front of her and blowing her cover. The enemy used this mistake, of course, leaving only Alpha's fragile scout alive.

When she looked out of her cover, she saw all four enemies in front of her. Two were in a line, so she fired a few shots at the one in the back first, hoping the closer one was still exhausted from running. The powersuit took the hits without slowing, though, and immeadiately reaction fired at her - and straight into his buddy's back, who went down screaming. Startled from what he had just done, he tood motionlessly for a moment ... which is why the next salvo of plasma easily hit and struck him down as well.

There were still two left though, and the brave Alpha scout seemed doomed. Nonetheless, she ducked for some cover - which would save her, though, because in the following counter-attack, only one enemy fired - and none of the shots got through, as if by miracle.

Too well trained to think about the hand of god in such a situation, she decidedly grabbed her plasma pistol and leapt forward again. The enemy who hadn't fired at her was waiting for just that, but she was quicker and killed him first, before sending her previous attacker to the ground.

Just then she realized that had sinlge-handedly killed a 4 man rescue team. And when the reinforcements from Beta and Gamma arrived after cleaning out the lift, she was already back with the prisoner, as if nothing hat happened. :)

How many dead bodies can you see in the picture?

Hint: It's not THAT easy.

don't steal all the credit.

You are right - that powersuit really deserves some special honors for such enormous stupidity. Too bad he's dead. ;)

Btw that's a good thing to report - they shouldn't fire if the teammate is obviously standing in the way.

I have a neat war story. Me and this player played on X-Base. He wanted me to find his men which would result reaction fire on me so I had an idea. Since he won't come out of the rooms on his side I sent all my guys on his side and planted loads of alien grenades right by the entrances of the rooms for a couple turns so my guys have enough time so they won't get caught in the explosion. Right after I got the guys out of there and turn ended...BOOM! I nearly engulfed all his men and he was like: "WTF!" "I think you won this one" Then he left on me. :( But at least I gave him a nice surprise. :naughty: And remember everyone if this situation happens to you like it did to me. Then pack high explosives instead for a assured win so they won't have a chance of quitting. Yes I'm very wicked at taking advantage of people like that. :naughty: Edited by Abyssion

Sure is Blehm. :) Especially when you surrounded my last guy and tortured him with words and then finally my last guy and your own men been engulfed with explosions. :P Hmm...it ain't the first time that he tortured my last guy in farm which that map is one of my weaknesses. :( Edited by Abyssion

If that guy didn't even look out once to see the explosives ticking for several turns, he deseved to be blown up. :)

Especially alien grenades - he could just have picked them up!

As long as throwing distance is not weight related, I prefer HE on every occasion... especially if his the guy who used his last TU to pick it up finds a timer displying "1" or "0" on it. :)

Well farm usually requires 2 Heavy cannon guys with HE or IN ammo with a spare clip per guy. If you are the first person moving at the first turn, wait 2 turns without doing anything. If you are the 2nd player, then wait 1 turn without doing anything. It is always good to do this because on farm, most people start charging in to buildings in the middle or right at you. Be sure to aim for buildings though. It makes it so that they have little cover when charging at you, providing them at a disadvantage no matter what armor they have. :)

  • 1 year later...
I was very much winning against someone with my "alien miners" strategy, sectoids armed with a mine, a plasma pistol and blade. It was a 5 on 1 fight, unfortunately, 4 of my men were several turns away, and I soon came to know that my heroic 5th sectoid had run out of ammo in his many kills. He whipped out his plasma blade and I clicked on it. "PUNCH" and "THROW", I didn't know you could throw knives in this game! I pick "THROW" and my sectoid throws the plasma blade.... right to the enemy's feet. ARGH! That should really be changed to "THROW AWAY" especially if thrown weapons are ever introduced (hatchets etc...) To add insult to injury, the enemy conserved ammo by executing the sectoid from behind, with the very same blade. one of my far-off men had located a grenade launcher, and shot one off into the general location of the enemy, killing him. Though I was victorious, I woud never forget that fatal mistake.

Throwing knives would be cool. It could simply use the knife as ammo and fire a projectile or somthing.

This seems like an easy-to-code problem, so it may well be implemented soon. And by the way, bayonets would be really great, conserving that precious ammo when it comes to those fleshy humans.

Edit: And floaters and sectoids and snakemen too, all the low-armor races.

Sadly the code prohibits a weapon being both a gun and a knife, It would be cool to be able to do that though.

new option instead of knife: has_melee:0/1 or 2 if you like to throw weird stuff in

Couldn't you just add throwing damage to any item. I mean anything is gonna hurt if I throw it at you, it's just a matter of how much ;)

Hmm, this thread is always marked as "unread" in my browser, even if nothing new has been written. Anybody else have the same problem?

What about passing, you wouldn't want your own units to get hurt when they pass ammo to each other. I assume throwing weapons will not be around for a while due to the large amount of work they require.

And as for the bayonets, I am saddened, would it be difficult to add a "strike" function to all weapons, if it's a bayoneted gun, it would do health damage, and if it's not AND the weight of the weight of the object is higher than the the armor of the victim, it does stun damage. Kinda like whacking someone on the back of the head.
