slickrcbd
I just took some heavy casualties on multiple consecutive missions and before my replacements could arrive I got a terror site. So I loaded my Skyranger with several tanks and the remaining troopers. However, on the first turn, my tank could see an alien camping outside the door. Normally I'd throw a smoke bomb, but the game wouldn't let me throw it over the three tanks. If I'm missing something, could somebody post a screen shot with a circle on where I put my cursor to throw a smoke bomb with 2-3 tanks blocking the way so that I don't get shot trying to leave or shot if I "end turn"? [NKF]
With 1 tank, you can throw a little bit further past the base of the ramp. You might want to try kneeling as well. With 2 - 3, it's practically impossible. The only suggestion I can give is to throw a smoke grenade in the Skyranger on turn 1 to protect those inside from anyone that can see into the back. Wait until the next turn then race your tanks out. Throw a second smoke bomb down for them. You still risk attracting reaction fire going down the ramp. Leaving on the second turn helps as most of the aliens won't be at full TUs on this turn. - NKF

slickrcbd
However, on the first turn, my tank could see an alien camping outside the doorwhat you are waiting for ... kill him!I got "no line of fire" for some reason when I tried to make an aimed shot at him, and was afraid that if I moved the tank forward it would be destroyed. to avoid reaction fire, DROP smoke grenades inside skyrangerinstead of throwing them ( via inventory screen )Since I only had two guys WAY in the back, shouldn't I throw the smoke grenade as far forward as the game would let me? also let me remind you that ... you are not the aliens I mean you can ALWAYS abort mission you already did show up on terror missionso your score hit won't be too big ( about 1 succesful large scout mission ) Well, since technically my Skyranger was fully loaded with three tanks and two troopers, I thought I'd see how effective the tanks are on a terror mission and cause as much damage as I could with just the tanks. I had one of each type, although this was the first time I'd used the canon tank since I built the laser tanks. Given the situation where out of fifteen soldiers I had eight dead and five wounded, I thought I might as well pull the canon tank out of retirement and send it to the front to fill up the empty space in the Skyranger. I didn't realize there were any down sides to doing so at all. My plan was to fight the aliens with the tanks while using the troopers to collect battlefield salvage. I had one carrying the rocket launcher (spare rockets on the ship) and a laser pistol while the other had only a laser pistol. No reason not to provide some extra fire support, especially since the rocket tank couldn't be everywhere. After reloading due to the bad start I actually managed to defeat the sectoids and cyberdiscs. Funny, I haven't seen sectoids in a while, it's been all mutons this month (the last five missions were all mutons), although I haven't seen snakemen at all this game. [NKF]
If you've got the laser tanks, taking a cannon tank along is somewhat redundant, since it's the same thing but with a stronger gun. Having two laser tanks would let your rocket tank move to the front. You know, I tried something like this recently since I wanted to try a few missions mainly with tanks and two support guys for support roles (smoke, flares, etc) or to go places tanks couldn't go to root out aliens that won't leave. As long as it's operated well, the cannon tank is quite an impressive machine. On one failed terror site, it managed to slay most of the superhuman sectoids and cyberdiscs on its own. Still failed, but to last as long as it did does make me thing more highly of it. Not as much as I regard the G.Cannon/Coelacanth, despite its stats being a carbon copy of the cannon tank. - NKF Edited July 11, 2012 by NKF
slickrcbd
I somehow missed an alert to your last post. The short answer was, the cannon tank was there and there was space in the Skyranger. Nothing else was available. Long answer:I recall this situation now. To answer the question about the canon tank. I'd just had a mission go badly where I won by the skin of my teeth. Then before the new recruits/reinforcements could arrive, I get a terror mission the next day (or maybe two days later. It takes 72 hours for new soldiesrs to show up, and this happened less than 72 hours after the bad mission. Sorry too long).Anyways, I was looking at what I had available to fight the terror mission with. I only had two guys in fighting shape. At that point in the game, I was still strapped for cash and storage, so I only had what I needed. I'd stopped using the canon tank after I buit the laser tank. I only had one laser tank (can't recall if I built two and one got scrapped in that aformentioned mission or if I only had one). I decided I had nothing to lose by pulling the cannon tank out of mothballs for that one mission. It let me fill up the skyranger, and got some use out of that old thing. The only reason I kept the cannon tank around was for an emergency reserve in case I got a base defense mission with my skyranger out. Same as those two soldiers. Granted, 1 canon tank and my two best soldiers (plus any wounded) aren't much for base defense, but at least I'd have a chance with the chokepoint.
