I had a thought the other day. What if, instead of having all the civilians during a terror mission constantly fleeing in terror, you have some people with their own arms, shooting at the aliens as well? :uzzi: :alientalk:

Also, it never made sense to me that Farmer Brown didn't try to defend his crops from the alien incursion. Maybe have a small number of civilians on regular missions, dependent on how fast the operative team gets there.

Possible quirks with all of this, at some point after you incorporate alien technology into your arsenal (like the power suit, that thing's just freaky looking), civilians may mistake you for aliens, and (if they're armed) shoot at you instead (berserk?). You'd have to come up with a safe way to disable them without killing them....or maybe that'd be too much of a hastle.

I think it might add an extra element of realism, though certainly not for the inital release. Just something else to think about.

well, i heard recently (haven't been able to test yet) that the smoke grenade in X-com could be used as a stun grenade (two smoke grenades at exactly the right distance from the target cause minor damage to the target and cause him to inhale enough smoke to pass out in a singe turn) Based on the way it was programmed it could work, but as I said I haven't tried it....maybe we should just make that the case here (smoke grenades or stun grenades....)

or we can say flibberty gibbet it and just shoot the rotten, ungrateful jerks.

If those farmers start shooting at you or the aliens i don't think their shotgun will do much damage, considering that it already takes a few heavy shots to kill a muton or your soldiers, when the're wearing armor. I thus think the problem is in the realism.

Been reading here for ages, but never had anything worthwhile to say till now

Armed civilians should be added, but for both sides. After all there could be people on earth who want the aliens to take over, and so try to disrupt x-com operations, or armed civilians trying to take on the aliens with their air rifles etc, would add a bit of difficulty trying to save them if they go running after aliens on purpose.

I think it wouldn't be too heretic (can i use that term in this context?) to add a few armed civilians for the terror missions. I wouldn't expect them to really affect the outcome much, seeing that they are untrained, and have civilian weapons. So maybe they might help a bit by doing damage at the begining of the game for the weak donkey terror sites, but just there for realism in the later ones.

A shotgun at short range would probably do more damage than the standard assult rifle; particularly against mutons, it says their armour is particularly resistant to AP ammunition, NOT the shrapnel of a shotgun blast...

Anyway, just my random comment of the day...

i agree, civillians shouldnt always go fleeing in terror, they should use "earthy" weapons like glass bottles and things to throw at aliens, (if the alien is close) and the weapons should be very weak for gameplay reasons (civilians running around killing ALL the aliens wih a pitchfork???)

also, i suggest children, its rather stupid the way that there are no kids in terror missions, do they somehow know that aliens are comming so run away from home??? or are all the adults just sterile??? (mind you, i would probably be tempted to shoot all the kids, heh)

I agree that some civilians should carry arms and fight back. (They have found another use for the Second Amendment) And maybe the police could help out at city missions.

What happens in places where the civilian population isn't armed? Like much of the world.

I agree there should be a chance of one or two armed police in a city or terror mission, but it should be low. After all the whole point is that Xcom are the only ones might know there is going to be a terror mission.

Even if you do have armed civvies running around it wouldn't matter as most terror missions are set at night and when the populace isn't expecting it. Now what would be fun is to see civvies running around in nightwear on a terror mission.

if by that you refer to that majority of the population everywhere is armed to their teeth then my guess is that u pringle live in america...am i right? if u didnt refer to that then im sry and dont read any further :D (yeah like your not gonna read the rest of the post). so to any other american out there who still thinks that everybody in the world stockpiles firearms like you do then ur wrong. eg in my country the majority doesnt have ANY firearms and not because we cant afford em (although they are bretty expencive) but because there are smarter ways to invest your money and everything cant be solved with brute force.

ok im sry i brought this up again but it seemed that some people here thought that all civilians should have like at least a shotgun during any mission where there would be civilians involved. so if any of ya moderators think i went too far feel free to delete this :)

This should be a region-related things.... USA have heavy rifles, bombs and neat armament. People in china use Kung Fu and can fly around or throw chi balls. Japan have ninjas hidden in every rooms. Russian have molotov cocktels and potatoes. etc etc

This is of course a very bad joke.

How about some 'stealth' infested civvies that look normal until within 5-6 squares of them. They could run up and use HTH or explode. As for armed civilians, I suggest that they have throwing weapons: donuts, pets, and small children.

Maybe 3 different grades of civilians?

US-type CV's (in states with allowed guns) : Armed with pistols, shotguns, semi-auto rifles. These guys will actively attack aliens (and maybe XCOM personnel) with their weapons and take cover like normal soldier AI's.
(Countries: USA, Switzerland, Eastern Europe)

Trained CV's (civilians in countries with universal military training) : No weapons. They will, however, pick up dropped weapons, respond to orders to move to cover, and not panic as easily as the typical dumb civilian.
(Countries: Singapore, Taiwan, Russia, China, South Korea)

Normal CV's (typical dumb buggers who run in front of your machine-gunners screaming for mum) : Your typical dumbass civilian. Panics, runs into crossfires, steps on prox mines, etc.
(Countries: Rest of the world)

I think civilian bravery should be in it, but by reasoning is thus: every time people, even those who hate each other, have a cause to fight for, they will mount up and risk their lives for their home, family, country, whatever. Sure, maybe they can't do a lot of damage to those creeps, and maybe they wouldn't last more than two turns. But it's realistic too. I mean, few people will give up all they have without a fight, and even the lowest of the low can be a hero in a crisis. Watch Independence Day for an example of what I mean.

Every one have different bravery and motivation. I think making everyone brave guy fighting for his home, country and kitty isn't good way... I think some people should be, as ya said, fighting and helping you in your fight. Some of them should be hiding and trying to avoid aliens at all costs, and others just running around...

I don't know how it looked in other versions but in my UFO: Enemy unknown civs were going to X-Com agents when they encountered ones, and civs were NEVER panicing. Unfortunately they weren't running from aliens too...

Unless I have a really bad donkey gun I'm gonna belong in the last category -- but you'll most likely find me hiding in a garbage can. You certainly wouldn't see me with my .22 running around trying to snipe mutons... Now if it was a .50 sniper rifle -- that might be a different story. (Canada has more guns than America per person...btw) We aren't the only country that buys guns for the heck of it, its just that other countries (especially European countries) that I consider "older" countries have learned from the mistakes (it comes from being a post-war area -- there hasn't been a war on US soil since like the civil war, we don't remember that far back and we love our second ammendment) Basically most countries don't like guns or fighting or war or all that BS, but will gladly take up arms if they have to -- IMO this is the way the world should run, but it won't ever be long between times that people have to take up their guns. That's besides the point. I think that maybe it should be an easter egg idea to have militant civies. IE if you have a terror mission in LA the guys are armed to the teeth with Saturday Night Specials ($50 handguns) wearing red bandana's and shuckeroonies. (that is a stereotypical example not meant to reflect poorly on LA or anyone in particular.) Another point is that usually it takes several hours for the skyranger to get to a terror site (and much less for another transport craft) but anyone who HAD a weapon has probably already been killed by the aliens by the time your soldiers arrive. As I said, easter egg is the most realistic way IMO.

I suppose to... Think like a civie in attacked by aliens city. What would you do when a big alien craft will drop to the city hordes of green muscle guys with pink faces and shoting around killing everyone? Would you take your little handgun and start charge towards 'em yelling: "Die ya green scum!"? (Maybe we should make a poll about it ;)?) Much of people probably would try to get out of attacked city and when its impossible try to hide, when unable to or found then probably start defending... But some militia would be nice....

(If we want stay close to original story then Ufopaedia in Enemy Unknown says terror sites are way to low X-Com's reputation by forcing goverments to evacuation of large areas.)

I think that civil people should have guns, but not all of them...

Why not a new type of civil

A group of wirdos yelling "Welcome our friends! Stop shooting!" All the time. Untill they got shot at, that is, then they are your normal dump civilian.
