Cat Sound Format

due to mostly everyone hating that the aliens screams of the Collector's Edition are c-r-a-p compared to the originals of the DOS version, so i have tried to edit the game's CAT sound files with CoolEdit2000, adjusting and replacing the original screams with the nasty new screams of the CE version.

unfortunately, CoolEdit2000 can only open the files but can't save in the same CAT format :(

does anyone know how can i do to save the sound files in the format that x-com uses? i've attached my edited CAT file if anyone wants to try it out himself, but it'll just make the game quit to the desktop when you enter the battlescape. however, it does contain the fixed screams if you load it up with CE2000.

I tried the file you uploaded, and it gave me the same problem.

I did try and am able to take the original sample2.cat file, open it in cooledit with the standard settings, then saved it as a PCM raw data .cat file and place it back in the game's folder and it runs fine. That is, of course, without making any changes to the contents.

I can also open the original file in goldwave, alter some of the sounds (meaning making them less hissy, other effects that do not change the length of the sound, or so I hope) and the game will run it, uncluding the altered sound, but then it won't play any of the effects that are in the file after the altered effect.... I suppose if you could figure out how to edit the file but keep all sound effects the exactly same length, then it might work... I suspect that those blips of static are code telling the game where in the .cat file the sound effect is...

I've also tried something simpler: replacing the sound file of the CE edition with the one of the DOS version. the game runs it but plays no sound effects on the battlescape -_-

if anyone wants, here's the CAT file from the original DOS version.

sound files from the original and CE are exactly the same (contents) but are stored in different frequency and such, so that won't work...

actually the contents are different (the SCREAMS are different :P ). besides that, the only difference is that the DOS version has a samplerate of 8000 and CE of 11025. converted it to 11025 but still doesn't work.
