Version Conflict

I have been playing UF0 2000 on and off for a week or so, utilising a couple of different versions (1062, 1071 and 1079). I have found version 1062 to be the most stable (unsurprisingly), but prefer on the whole to use 1071. However, it has been my experience that when I use version 1071 and people using version 1079 attempt to challenge me it causes my computer to completely freeze and forces me to reboot (i.e. does not just go to the incompatable version screen). This is very annoying and I was wondering if anyone else is having the same difficulty? I am not inclined to use version 1079, as I have found it to be very incompatable with my Operating System (i.e. it causes it to crash *a lot*). I have ammended my Log In name to read Matthew (1071), but I was wondering what kind of other solutions (if any) people have come up with.

What situations do you find cause the crashes? Some people have issues with virtual memory. I don't know if increasing your allowed virtual memory dramatically will help at all, but its worth a short.

what operating system, memory, whatever other specs...

This machine is using Windows Vista. It has a 2.6 GHz processor and 2046 MB RAM, not really sure how important that is. In any case, it crashes as soon as somebody using 1079 challenges me and when using 1079 crashes during the Mission Planner stage, as happened several times with Sagak yesterday and another guy today. When using 1079 I can also not do anything else with the computer without the Operating System freaking out. On the other hand, it works perfectly using 1062 and almost perfectly when using version 1071.

god....2048!? :yarr:

well we know its not a memory problem :D

im inclined to blame Vista myself but I can't validate that sorry.

the 1079 does run though right? how often are the crashes? are you doing anything specific? (moving around inventory items, tabbing between soldiers, changing resolutions, etc)

can you recreate the crashes by doing the same thing or do they seem random.

Heh.

No, most of the 'in game' crashes with 1079 seemed very random (though they did occur in the situations you describe); plenty of problems if I tried to leave the game and return to windows without quitting. The freezes between 1079 (opponent) and 1071 (me) seemed quite predictable (i.e. every time someone challenged me) until today, when Sagak and I managed to get to the 'Non Compatable Versions page' (this was after having it happen yet again with somebody else). Sometimes when I reach the 'Mission Planner' with 1071 I cannot see what the other person is typing or start the game, so we both have to log off and log back on again (which works pretty much every time).

I agree that Vista is quite likely to be the cause, no idea why though.

On a related note, is anybody else unable to change the Race of five Squad Members? I find it a bit odd, as I was playing Berro a few days back using version 1062 and he was definitely using fifteen Chameleon 'Cylons'.

ill bet those '5' units are female humans. change them to male first, then go back in and change the species.

strange but true

Yep. Thanks for the advice. Will do. I was sick of using Mind Slaves. Version 1071 crashed again earlier. Some problem between me and MadHeadShrinker recognising each others version (even though they are exactly the same). We kept losing contact during the Mission Planning and once we got on the Battlescape he couldn't read what I was writing. The game played out fine, but when we returned to the Server Main Area, my computer crashed. Frickin' unpredictable, oh well.

You managed to play many turns with Vista?

I ran a test on 64-bit home version (amd 64) and it crashed on player 2:s first turn in hotseat. Version 1071. Is there any difference with 1079?

Ah, well, I'm using the 32 Bit version of Windows Vista (even though my Desktop is actually a 64 Bit Machine! Damn, Dell!). As I understand it, the 32 Bit version of Windows Vista has in general proven more compatable with many games than the 64 Bit version. I find that UFO2000 Version 1071 and 1062 work about 90-100% effectively (I cannot remember having any problems with 1062, but there might have been one) on my 32 Bit version of Vista, whilst 1079 works about 60% of the time without errors.
