Anyone consider using the V-22 Osprey as the initial troop carrier? They've finally finished testing, are designed for rapid cargo/troop movement, have vertical takeoff/landing capability, and fit precisely into the timeframe of the game.

I suppose the models and so on for the troop carrier are already done, but after v1.0 I think a change towards realism in military equiptment would add to the atmosphere of the game.

This gives a pretty good idea about how it would look in the battlescape, and the cargo capacity it could have.

The troop capacity seems too high for game balance though, so maybe it would be appropriate to call it the high performance version so extra fuel tanks would take up ten seats. Maybe change it to V-23.

The current troop carrier aircraft is based on the v-22 somewhat, but uses ducted, afterburning turbofans instead of rotors. We will not be using the v-22 because it is much too slow to circumnavigate the globe in any reasonable amount of time. The original skyranger was transonic, so I wanted a design that was at least capable of transonic flight in order to fill its role.

Yea, I'm partial to the V-22 as well, mostly cause I think it just looks really neat. I don't know about its use though. I suspect given how fast things need responding to in the game, it'd probably have to have a more specific use tied to it. Such as reinforcements during a battle, or for visiting terror sites or crash sites.

I couldn't ever see them in an intercepting role though. Stuff's flying too fast for that. I had a post as well about them at the tail end of this thread here:

Edit: The first link still works out of the 4 I listed, but the rest must have gotten rearranged somewhere.

Ah well, you're right about the speed issue.

I've heard talk of missions where the aliens try to attack your supply ships. If this makes it in, may I suggest utelizing the V-22 for the supply ships? It occurs to me that X-CORP underground bases don't have runways, so 747's won't do. Besides, the small fast V-22s would be much better for keeping the low profile requisite in supplying a hidden base.

With all that air traffic radar? I would just assume that the xcom base would be supplied by truck just like everyone else.

I think that the condors would suit that role just fine in any event... but does the X-corps really have 50 billion dollars to spend on a fleet of military aircraft to deliver the mail and toiletries?

$50k for a toilet seat, now that's government spending for you :)

Back to the subject, the way I've been picturing the possible use of the V-22 is not too dissimilar to something like the Lightening when you research that. Limited range and fuel, best used for actions nearest our bases. But while something like the Lightening could traverse aproximately half the globe before needing to return to base, the V-22 could have a range a fraction of that, like maybe a quarter of the globe or something (like maybe it could traverse most of a continent but not all of it).

Or leave a bit of space to improve the V-22 one more step before going to the next new thing i.e. Lose the propellers and add jet engines, then it becomes a supersonic transport slightly under par of the Skyranger.

I just like the idea of seeing more technological progression in these kinds of games beginning with something familiar.

Add jet engine to an osprey and you get the current condor ;)

Um, no. Compare Condor to V-22

They're pretty much nothing alike. Once again, I'll point out that these bases do not have runways.

Most X-CORP bases will probably be in rural areas without road access, and it would be a simple matter for an advanced organization like X-CORP to use stealth materials to stay off radar. Also, the Condor would quite obviously have a much larger radar profile.

Our Condor model is not the AN-124, whatever that is, ours is made up, it doesn't exist <_<

Heh.

There are few things I hate more than to have my work compared to a precident work of art that had nothing to do with the influence of the design.

It ought to look incredibly Osprey-like. ;)

Anyways, I just did an image search and I disagree that it looks 'incredibly orca-like', but I'm glad that it conjures fond memories of a game you used to play.

Actually it's the second image that looks most like it to me. Don't worry, it already looks waaaaaaay better than an old early 1990s-era pixelation.

EDIT: btw, the reason it may not appear orca like is that they added some different designs in the sequel like the orca transport and such, but we're referring to the original Tiberium Dawn ORCA. (God I HATE EA, thanks to them we'll never see a proper ending of the Tiberium saga, because we don't get the promised "Tiberium Twilight".)
