red knight
Yesterday I woke up with an unusual desire to draw, so this is what I got.... It was pretty difficult to make it different from the original... Hope you graphics guys like it, and I expect you to make it look far better than this sketches... red knight
The other views... Deimos i know that we have to give them character like live poses, but I suck at drawing something I cant visualize...
Raven Squad
Looks intresting. Shape seems fine. I cant remember exactly what cyberdisk looked like in UFO, but imo that looks different enough. Are we going to give alien "pets" different hit areas, cos shooting to thing to anti-grav machines would disable it nicely. Then u have some else than pieces to research. Vaaish
I think it has promise. Of course the person that makes a 3000 poly version is seriously wasting good polys
stoopher
I think it has promise too. I think some drawings on grid paper would be nice. This can give us some ideas about dimensions, cos then you can include a scale. this would certainly be good for the programmers. A tip for you, when you draw, draw on tracing paper, in pencil. but put the paper over one-milli gridded paper so you have good dimensions and straight lines. Do all your rough ideas on the same sheet, (I mean corrections of lines or refinements as you bring the idea to life) then when you finalise draw over the lines you want in pen. This will allow somebody else to use your bad ideas (which may be modifiable to a good idea by them), so not to loose any of your inspiration. Concept art is good when coloured too. Do you have any ideas for colour of this thing?
Guest drewid
I worked with someone who had product design training and he did a variation on that. He wouuld work on a design, get a crit, then put over another piece of paper, and trace through the bits that worked, then redesign the bits that didnt. It's a powerful way of designing stuff. and you can do something very similar in any drawing package with layers.
Deimos
Don't worry too much at the concept stage about dimensions and stuff. We have the references from the original game for that. The most important thing with initial concepts is to get the feel of the character across. Later on as I mentioned in another thread, the more technical stuff can be worried about. I agree that when we come across new ground with new models later on that a sense of scale is important but for now no need to worry how big a cyberdisc is as we already know how big they are RK, top :happybanana: mate. I like it. Keep this up and we'll pressgang you into the art dept If you don't mind I'm gonna give this a colour job. I particularly like the secondary one. Vaaish, Just imagine the smoothness of the curvature on the model with 3000 polys. Just kidding I know product designers that use the opposite method, they go with their hearts and sketch freeform. I always had problems with the outlet of initial ideas and product specs. I once lost a client because I fired up a freeform sketch and didn't worry about the actual sizing of the end product. He just couldn't understand that a sketch could be used as a base for a more technical drawing later. I guess some people just have problems thinking outside of their little boxes Oh well it wasn't worth much anyway.
GreatGold
Hey - One thing I used to always do in my head, when seeing the Cyberdisk, was add some type of animation to it. Perhaps a gun would be lowered from the bottom, or rise from the top, aim and then fire. Is it going to have some sort of animation to enhance the design? Like movement wise, or firing wise? I particularly like the secondary one.No way, I have enough for a Programming and a Project Leader Position .... By the way it was pretty difficult to stay true to the original without copying the original... Feel free to modify it in whatever way it suit the look and feel of Xenocide... GreatGold: I was thinking on the line of maybe a plasma condensation on the weapons pod, that it is accelerated to shot it... Guest Jim69
Hmm, the Cyberdisks shoot plasma, maybe u could have the cyberdisks shape flowing into the 4 spikes that are being used in the heavy plasma.
Vaaish
If it is going to have a turret then the turret would have spikes not the disc itself. if the disk shoots w/o a turret then they could be integrated.
Guest Jim69
I would have thought that not having a turret and making the think turn itself would be a good idea, as it is an alien design, not human. Just one more distinctly alien type from the human type (tank that is). Edited June 9, 2003 by Jim69
Vaaish
Not all human tanks have turrets. Look at the StuG III, hetzer, or the JgdPz IV from WWII. the main thing that will make it alien is the look, materials, and weaponry. Animation won't necessarily make it alien. Breunor
IIRC, the original cyberdisk spun its entire frame to fire, so I would keep the weapon in the front. You could either have 2 of the plasma spikes where the edges of the disc are now, or 2 pairs angled in a little, like the tips of an X. It's a nice design there, what about having some type of sensor array in the upper bulge?

mikker
One thing I used to always do in my head, when seeing the Cyberdisk, was add some type of animation to it.It would be nice to see it moving, not just floating, like it lowers its head, and raises its bu...ehh...neck, when moving. Guest Jim69
Whoa, looks cool, specially with the organic look tho like u said, not really like a machine, but the model looks quality. I think the lines curve nicely to show an alien concept, rather than what I thought was a human type of machine in UFO.

Vaaish
looking good but for the same of viewing the form could you please post if flat shaded w/o the texture? few suggestions: mavbe make it more teardrop shaped to get away from the original XCOM one a bit more. look through the plasma tech and maybe add in the spikes for the cannons. Think about combining hard edges with smooth to give it different feel. Questions:what is the poly count currently?

Deimos
Firstly I have to say that looks really weird Though the texture and lighting are good, Like Vaaish said this isn't a case of how good you can render your model. We need to see the model not the fancy lighting and textures. Please take a look at the artists submission guidelines for how your model concepts are supposed to be submitted. Thanks I can't comment technically of form until I see the structure so I'll hold my comments till I see the flatshaded version.
Breunor
Yes, very weird (in a good way) looking design, but near impossible to see with background and texture. I like the idea of a floating 'wobble' animation during hover.
Ion
Oh damn thats ugly. First of all:I reshaped it as Vaaish said. And I like it more this way. Thanks!Second:It wasn't a show how good I could render or texture, merely how it could look like. A Concept Art!OK some part of me like to show of. ;O) OK??I tested other smoothing groups and so but that doesn't look good whithout texture on it. ;O)The polycount right now is 2464 I will look up the plasma thingie. I don't know now what you mean right now but soon I probably will.
Ion
And Vaaish I enjoy reading your sugesetions/critics. It's well noticed, and I thank you for that. It's good advice and I like it.

Deimos
Whoa, Oyster alert Actually I'm not going to say what that first one reminds me of suffice to say its female and biologiacally reproductive I think you're heading a bit off line with the model. It is a cyber-disc you're modelling, the organic look doesn't really fit for it. How about trying to think in terms of a car or some other high tech piece of equipment as that's what the cyberdisc is. Basically its a mini ufo with a heavy plasma. Below is a very quick coloured pic of RK's concept. Imagine it if you will as circuit boards and 'glowing bits' tm inside with a protective armoured shell on the outside. Try to imagine it with Crix's firestorm skin on the outside and the armour plates being sectionalised. Ion you need to flat shade your models, don't bother with smoothing groups or anything fancy. We need to see the poly details on it. Read this and here is the submission guidelines. http://www.xcomufo.com/forums//index.php?a...=ST&f=29&t=1352is the submission guideline, please read it if you want your models to be considered for inclusion into the game. Vaaish
Maybe pull out all the polys on that front indention and just make it go in like this \_/ have the sides flat no detail, also on the top the smooth ridges you can probably makes those angled plates instead of rounded lumps. same for the indentions on the side make them look like this from a cross section : ___\|-----/
Ion
OK FirstYou gyus say different things. One say Make it Teardrop likethe other say it out of line for the CyberDisk I can take it. It means extra job for my part but thats OK. But please come together on one point PLZ! Second I know how a Cyber Disk Look like I've been playing X-com since it was released almost.;O)
Deimos
Vaaish yes, good one exactly what I had pictured. Seeing as I forgot to attach the sketch earlier I'll post it now Edited June 20, 2003 by Deimos
Guest blaa
Actually I like the organic Cyberdisk. It would explain why we can MC them whilst our HWPs can't be MCed.
revenant4
I feel the cyberdisk could be a little mix of both organic and metallic...that blue lining Deimos, looks good and I believe that should be worked in as part of the metallic (roboticly enhanced) feature of the alien...Ion...Damn you've got talent, is all I got to say... :happybanana:

Deimos
I just noticed, you're using max. How about grabbing the iridium sheen tex map Maverick posted hereabout a throd of the way down. Its called iridium_sheen.zip and applying it to the outer shell surfaces of the disc? Make sure the material is a 50% grey first though or it might look a bit weird.
aLeaX
ok how about this? the blue strips are really some kind of plasma circulators that keep the CyberDisk moving.... (by some strange hydromagnetic propulsion system )But when this mean contraption fires the plasma gathers and between the spikes a radiant ball of plasma is formed. When it reaches sufficient mass it is hurled at the target enguilfing the enemy ships into a burning haze of overheated metal as they plummet to their deaths (I got a little carried away, -_- )
Ion
I tested his mapbut I didn't got it right so I made myself a texture of that effect I think you're where after. If not, I will try it again Best Regards/Ion
