Maybe we could make an animation when a UFO attacks your base?
That is, you can see your base defenses fire :uzzi2: at the UFO and destroy it/fail...
Hmmm?

I believe it was discussed before, let's see if I can dig up the thread...

edit : I was wrong, I thought you were talking about turrets firing while fighting the aliens inside the base

I like it. Although I don't think Deimos will, as he will have to be the one to make it! :P
I'm only partially inactive. :P I can still be reached at cpl.facehugger@gmail.com, and via PM. Preferably the former.

I would like there to be animations. I remember an old favorite, "Empire Deluxe". Came on 1 3 1/2 disk. Every unit had its own theme music and animation. That was cool.

I have to say I like the idea... It is always good to have some eye candy when the fighting is not interactive or not very interactive. It makes it more immersing. I got to say one more time I LOVE this idea.

Would be good yea. Or maybe even have a certain amount of control over the turrets, eh eh?. Or would that be too hard? :P

But with all the different defensive weapons, missiles, guns, plasma... etc, that would be a lot of animations, and that's only one series of movies. If there are different alien ships that attack that compounds the problem further.
I guess if someone was good with flash or something it could be a minigame, but it might kill the mood.

Dude, I would love complete control over the turrets. Or something. I mean, obviously, you are the base commander with complete control, or some kind of deity controlling the action. At any rate, you should be able to at least control one turret and give orders to the rest.

Could have it mixed and matched, so the ship and defence animations are done seperatly, with the program then selecting the correct defence and ship for the situation, but it seems an unecessary addition to me.

What I'd rather see is the evacuating Skyrangers and interceptors having to run the gauntlett of the Alien battleship. I can't see the aliens just sitting there and letting you evac your scientists unhindered. Trying to evac while under fire could be potentially disastrous.

It sounds like the way things are being described so far, it sounds suited to RTS in this particular mode. I don't know why, but I was reminded of older games like Missile Command. Perhaps something like this (updated variant of course ;)) is a little closer to the minigame definition.

I mean, in that game, your job was to block and destroy with your own defenses all the incomming missiles. I'd imagine the input devices would be gamepads, keyboard movement keys (space or something to fire), mouse, or joystick. With something like the mouse or gamepad here, I was thinking of something different for the alternate fire...

While your intercepting projectiles and returning fire whenever UFOs peak into and out of range, the alternate fire button can trigger the launch of a ship of yours at a time that's trying to evac the battle area (you can alt fire in quick succession if you want to make a quick run of all your ships, or take a more cautious spread out approach to their departures).

The alt fire only works for as many instances as you have ships that have to leave from that location. You can defend the ships with your turret weapons, blazing a trail for their escape, but once they've left, they can't be called back in this mode (the game effectively controls them on predefined (or seemingly random) flight paths as they leave.

Anyway, just a thought I had in favor of a mini-game.

What if in steat of a mini game you had another instance of a tactical ship combat. So you could dispatch interceptors to defend the base and in addition you would just have the fire support of the base. or if you didnt have any combat craft you would have a number of turns to shoot at the alien craft before they reached your base.

This sounds like another excellent reason to have an Aeroscape. In addition to the usual craft you might deploy, you would also have turrets and defenses to be controlled. It would also allow for greater number of attacking ships that would be expected.

It's a good idea ...maybe while the ships are dispatched the turets can fire at the ships ,cause that's what a base defense should do ,defend ...and the alien ship who's invading has to be huge in size and dispatch fighters of her own ,so that while the ships are fighting in a aerial combat the mother ships tries to land on the base and send mini landing pods ..that's down right base assault right there ;)

We can use the same principle for when we attack .We can have an escort of ships and a big ship to land ,but since we are not that advanced in tech we can't lunch the landing pods ,but we just try and land the big ship ,not before we blow up some of the bases defense .

We could have a full blown real time strategy game...........
