Is The Mind Shield Supposed To Be Available?

I've never seen this thing in all of the time I've played this game until just yesterday. I did a stun raid on MarSec :D and when I got back, there was a mind shield sitting in my inventory. However, I can't sell it and it isn't in the UFOPaedia. Is this a glitch?

It's because of a glitch that the mind shield is in the game. It was a prototype item that probably was in a beta. It was not completely removed by the programmers before it's release. As you found out, you can find them in Marsec raids.

 

You need the mind shield in your hand to use it. As long as it's activated, (you must do it manually) it will increase your PSI defence by 30 points.

 

The item is very glitched. If you keep the mind shield active after you complete the mission, the PSI bonus becomes permanent. That means you get 30 points of training after EVERY mission. After a few missions, you can have every single one of your agents with over 100% psi defense, rendering you immune to all the dangerous PSI attacks.

There are one or two psi attacks types that will still get through even with 100+ psi defence. Stun works. But not mind control, the most intrusive attack ever.

 

But I find spending the time boosting your psi defence with the shield to be counter productive. There are so few psionic encounters as it is, and psi requires a line of sight to function. With a few good hybrids or androids in particular, psi encounters aren't that bad.

It's not complete, so it's not surprising that it doesn't cost anything. Ah well.

 

Try this, equip a mind-bender in one hand and the mind shield in the other.

 

First open up the mind bender action panel and you should be able to check your psi defence level. Go out and switch on the mind bender. Let time run, then open up the mind bender action panel again and check the level again.

 

As long as the mind shield is left on and you leave the level or you end the mission with it on, you should keep that extra 20 defence points.

 

Try it with a human recruit and repeat this over a few quick raids (Raid, switch on mind shield, then escape).

Weird. I don't know what I was doing wrong, but now it works.

I was trying it with a hybrid, so I tried it with a human and it worked, I then tried it with another hybrid and it worked and then it worked with the original hybrid. I must have been doing something wrong (perhaps fooling around with the mind bender does something? maybe not).

I noticed that when you turn the mind shield on you instantly get +30 psi defense. The equip screen says (if you place the pointer right) from say 25/25 to 55/25 psi defense. When you turn off the mindshield the extra psi defense slowly (actually quite fast, but not instantly, about 10 seconds) goes away. If you turn on the mind bender the shield deactivates so don't do it before you exit the battlescape or turn the shield on again just before.

 

This could have been a nice item. I wonder why it was cut. I'm assuming the bug when you leave combat could be fixed. I know enemy psykers aren't really scary, but still...

 

PS: Damn it! I forgot to test it on androids...
