Guest Quantum
I recently found a rar file that has xcom and a fixed exe which allows it to run perfectly in win xp, with sound and correct speed and everything! I found it on www.suprnova.org in the games section. have fun!
[[Micah]]
It's not listed on the tracker any more. Would you mind reseeding it? I'd like to take a look at it.

Guest Quantum
I'm at work right now but when I get home I will put just the fixed exe file on my server. It has no information with it, no readme, etc. I have no idea who programmed it or how it works, but to whomever did, huzzah to you!
Guest Quantum
Here it is:http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/d/b/dbl125/xcom_fixed.exe Just put the file in your ufo directory and run it. I'm not sure which version of x-com it requires, but I assume it uses the latest one.

[[Micah]]
Ah, it's just f0dder's fix. We've had that for almost two years. I thought you had something new and interesting You can tell him thanks at his website: http://f0dder.has.it/
Guest Quantum
ah okay that's cool. But if this has been around for so long, why are there so many posts around here of people complaining they can't get xcom to work with the various crappy dos tools?
[[Micah]]
Because f0dder's fix only works with the collector's edition of the game. Most people have the old dos one because you can't find the collector's anywhere to buy and the old version has better sounds. But the dos version won't run on many peoples' comps, or it runs too fast, so people are using dosbox now which can get the dos version to run very well. Guest Quantum
what sounds are different between the original and collector's versions? I used to have the old dos version and now I'm playing the collector's edition apparantly with the fix, and I can't remember any differences. Cpl. Facehugger
In the original, the alien death screams sounded like a shriek. In the CE, the alien death screams sound like a baby going duh-oh.
Kamikazee
I might actually download one of these fixes, i've been using a cpu slower thigy ma bob like turbo. me friend made it.but it doesn't work, i slowed my pc down so much that ME would barley work (something like 1%-0%!) and the game was still not the correct speed!!!!!!!!!! and guess wot, now my bloody Xcom interceptor doesn't work. I cant take it anymore!
Guest Quantum
well the sectoid and floater deaths sound like a guy going "dooooh" but most of the other aliens still die with a shriek, like ethereals and snakemen. I think it sounds better... I just had a hankering to play apocalypse after playing x-com again but I left the cd at my home (I'm at college). if anyone has x-com apocalypse, I will trade the collectors edition file for it. AIM me at quantumpion if interested.
Cpl. Facehugger
Well, if the game is installed on your comp, then you can get the nocd crack from somewhere. Otherwise, you'd need a 50+ mb file. Unfourtnately, hotmail only supports 1mb attachments. Maby J'ordos could help you.
Guest Quantum
well we could always use direct transfer through ssh or AIM. Is the entire cd for apoc only 50 megs? I can easily send UFO CE to anyone who wants it since the file is only a couple megs. Actually I could put the whole thing on my webspace for a while if someone would be willing to send me the iso for the apoc cd.
XcomVic
i have the same prob with game speed, sucks, no cpu slower to date has been able to slow down my 2gig...what are you guys using? that actually have it slowing down game speed not my damn comp
Crus8r
Have you tried running the dos version under DOSbox? I find that it works far better than any CPU-slower...and you get the better sounds (and, in my experience, music). DOSbox is absolutely great in that you don't have to setup any special hard drive partitions, worry about filesystems (FAT vs NTFS), or any of the other crap that some emulators require. The latest version also runs VERY well in a window, so you can multitask while playing Without DOSbox, my computer (Athalon 2ghz) ran UFO so fast that you could literally play an entire game on the '5 sec' time setting in the geoscape. But with DOSbox, I have it set so it runs just a hair faster than it did on my 486 10 years ago....no other slowdown solution I have tried has even come close to how well DOSbox works. I have seen a few ppl saying that DOSbox has problems with P4 CPUs...dunno, I only have athalons and pIIIs, so maybe someone else can speak up 'bout that. But I'd definitely give it a try, anyway...like I said, DOSbox is very easy to install and setup, and if it don't work, just uninstall it - Crus8r

j'ordos
Quantum : the 54Mb version of xcom apoc is not the CD, it's a rip. The CD was about 300Megs? (I forgot). Currently xcomdl does no longer offer that for download. Hope it gets back soon. XcomVic : Yeah, I know the links are down (again), I'll find some new ones right away . Slowdown programs are plenty: turbo, moslo, cpu-killer, AT-slow, ... But it's not sure they will work any better .

Just to be safe, I included multiple links. Let's hope they last a little longer than the 3 previous ones Edited February 23, 2004 by j'ordos

rholliday
The version of UFO Defense that I play came on a PC Gamer CD a few years back. It's native to Windows, and (with the above fix) works on XP. I can zip it up and attach it, if people think that's okay and want it. I believe the way in which it was distributed originally would provide for this.
XcomVic
careful about that.... micah had to remove his links for a reason.... anyway what was the thing about super human/genius setting actually being beginner? and what util was it i had to dl? it wasnt mentioned in the faq or in the intro on the dl page here... XcomVic
now im pissed, if i jsut so happen to get the old dos version than update it with the 1.4 patch, and then after i pick where i want my base windows wants to freeze and then close my ufo game, what would you do to fix that? i think ima just play superfast mode if this keeps up.... currently on my wifes laptop 1.3gig, 256ram, gay intergrated geforce2 thing, but ce version works jsut fine, so not a hardware...maybe software? j'ordos
rhollay : sorry, you can't attach illegal things to the boardXcomVic : Are you using DOSbox to run the DOS version now? Then everything *should* work. Xcomutil is the thing you need for the difficulty bug, 1.4 patch screws up sounds again, wouldn't recommend installing that.
