Your Favorite Mission

Recommended Posts

I know this has been covered by others in varying posts. But I thought it'd be cool to amass all the most memorable missions in one thread for our collective appreciation and reminiscence. I'll start off with the most memorable mission in my XCOM history:

The Shopping Mall Battle

A mothership had dropped alien insurgents through the big tube into Nutrivend's biggest shopping mall on a superhuman map. It was before I myself had shields, disruptor armor or good alien weapons. My 16-agent team was wearing Megapol armor, and was armed with submachine guns for most troops, autocannons for the machine gunners, and laser sniper rifles for the two snipers. All agents also carried 2 HE grenades, 2 stun grenades, a prox. mine, and a lawpistol side-arm. (I'm funny that way - I like to give side-arms to all agents, just in case. Once in a blue moon, it's been worth it.)

My 4 teams of four agents each were beginning to get good fire positions and scout the mall a little bit. I tend to keep each team together as a unit for mutual cover and support, but of course spread out enough to avoid losing an entire team to a boomeroid, vortex, or dimension missle. Without Marsec body pieces, all four teams were on the ground.

And then, all heck broke loose.

I don't know why, but there were legions of aliens, maybe 30 - even 40 or so (if you count the hyperworms). There were whole squads of arthropods, at least two squads of skeletoids, not to mention spitters sniping from high positions, while multi-worms, poppers, and a few brainsuckers rushed my squads. And they descended from all sorts of high levels, stores, and those catwalks high in the malls.

I'm a very meticulous tactical player: I always have my squads near cover, with clear arcs of fire, shared fire-zones for mutual support, all kneeling or lying down on aggressive mode, so they'd hold position unless I told them otherwise. I'm very much a win-the-firefight-first kind of commander. Win the firefight with superior tactics, layout and discipline; then storm and hunt down as need be.

But I was getting pelted with spitter fire and even multi-worm venom from high and distant spots, not to mention from the swarm of skeletoids flying around or firing from up high. A squad of very heavily-armed arthropods came down one of those ramps from some structure, and started tossing vortex mines and laying down devestator-cannon fire. There was alien fire coming down on all 4 squads from all directions. And there was XCOM fire - SMG bullets, autocannon rounds, and laser bolts - blasting in all directions. Civilians were panicking and running everywhere.

It was just INSANE.

Things went haywire pretty quickly. My best friend's squad was facing the squad of arthropods, and they were taking the aliens down, but not without damage from the barrage of vortex mines and boomeroids. All four were critically injured, and had to retreat behind some decent cover to use their medi-kits. But the arthropods and skeletoids were actually trying to storm their position and take them out!

So I forced my own squad (in which my own self-named commander character was) to jump up, and run through the hail of various gunfire to reinforce their position, taking wounds on the way. It got to the point where the two teams, now pinned down, were taking turns shooting and then trying to use medi-kits to stay alive. The other two teams, of which every member had been taking fire, had never stopped constantly firing at the various attackers.

Several civilians were killed in the horrendous cross-fire. 10 of the 16 agents were wounded, most of them critically. The mall was completely trashed - nothing had escaped being damaged by alien or XCOM fire. Some agents had run out of ammo and I'd been forced to have them use their wimpy lawpistols. But we killed or knocked unconscious all of the aliens, and no agents died! I had to fully re-arm every agent on that mission.

It was the craziest, most hectic public mission I'd ever fought, and never have I seen the aliens fight so aggressively, nor with so much organization and determination. It was the definitive all-out slug-fest between the aliens and XCOM, at least in the history of my XCOM.

As it should be. :-)

I'd like to add a quick anecdote to my above. In tonight's game (July 17th, 2006), in week 4, I investigated a MarSec warehouse where two aliens ships both dropped insurgents in the same UFO visit. I always thought that the actual number of aliens in a building had little to do with whether one or two ships tubed it.

But I was wrong! Some 42 aliens were in the building (it might have been more - my explosives might have incinerated some bodies). It was a big 3-level warehouse. I had 12 agents: 4 up on the top level, 4 on the middle level, and 4 in the basement (to prevent over-the-top or underneath flanking by the aliens). The entire alien force attempted to STORM the 4-agent squad in the basement.

I had to call in reinforcements from the other two squads to beat them all back. There were 9 arthropods, 8 skels (both with shields and devastators - yikes!), multiworms, hyperworms, and a total SWARM of brainsuckers. My agents were dropping standard HE grenades among themselves just to shake off the onslaught of brainsuckers. Furious battle. Second place to the one I mention above.

well, i believe that every drop, depending on the ship size, drops X amount of troops

after that the troops will grow and spread, so if you hadn't attacked it imagine the consequences...
