What is the best way to play X-Com2 now?

Recommended Posts

Greetings.

After some serious time spent playing countless X-Com1,3,4,etc games i am finally willing to try 2!

However, as i recall, X-Com 1 and 2 are notorious for numerous bugs that create insane amount of patches, utilities and stuff, everything incompatible with each other, etc etc. With X-Com 1 i remember using Seb76 saver program that did all for me. But for X-Com2 it isnt available...

So, i'd very much appreciate if someone could tell me what IS the best way to play X-Com 2 on a modern rig (I am running XP SP3 32bit btw).

I heard about some et patch, about some patches from strategycore that tweak little things like images of ships or routes in battlescape. I also heard that Xcomutils must be working for X-Com2 as well as 1.

So, what do i use? I suppose DosBox should be the solution, with different patches applied? Do i need that et patch? Do i need those fixes?

PS: I have no problem with game's tech tree, meaning its okay for me to watch out for some items that i should have in my posession by the time tech X finishes. I just want a normal gameplay, with as little as possible bugs and as many as possible features like auto-sell of production, remembering and saving not fully used clips etc.

Well, i went with Dos version (english one, dont take the link on this forum as it leads to cracked czech version where both english and german are replaced with czech) + copied animations from win version to have animations in intro and outro.

Installed 2.1 patch from strategycore (just copy contents of HD folder to your TFTD folder to apply it)

I installed xcomutils on top of that.

Didnt use et patch since its unfortunately for windows version (doesnt work for me, blank black screen and nothing else) (however, most fixes are done by xcomutils anyway, so you only suffer from not having some advanced mechanics like autosell)

PS: Also, i set cycles manually to 40 000 (this provides non laggy but also not too fast geoscape). I found it out by manually correcting the value so that on 1 hour i have smooth animation, but on 5 seconds i have it going slowly (since 5sec is supposed to be 5 sec per 1 sec real time, but on auto cycles for me its 5 minutes per 1 sec real time). I manually increase this value for missions with alot of objects like base defenses to prevent it from slowing to a crawl.
