"Will you look at that? They even got Arcades. Aw, Space Invaders...how cute." - Mark Tryle, Junior Tech.
---

As our operations continue to expand so does our need for additional personel to help us continue to operate at full efficiency. As a result, new residential facilities will be needed to accomodate our growing force.
The Living Quarter Facility were designed to fulfil exactly that need.

Built from a heat-resistant polymer alloy, this room's construction blocks and rebounds temperature, keeping it at comfortable levels regardless of external influences.
This, combined with the ergonomic two-floor design and the recreation facilities built in, creates a confortable enviroment able to support up to 50 personnel.

Each Living Quartes Facility contains the following:
- A Small Galley Kitchen manned by two resident cooks who prepare a meal at the end of each shift.
- An adequately equipped gym where personnel are advised to spend at least one hour per day. ([X-com] Special Operatives are required to spend at least 2 hours per day if they are not assigned to a mission.)
- A Recreation/Living room equipped with two plasma screen televisions, Computers with Internet access, either a Pool or a Ping-Pong table and usualy some miscellanous other recreation material. This equipment may seem a little extravagant to the casual observer but [X-com] operations recognises the need of our employees to Relax after the strenuous work and long hours they go through.
- Sleeping accomodations similar to Japanese "capsule hotels" beds. There are 35 total 1,5 x 1,5 x 3 soundproof capsules, each one also containing a washroom, lockers and a video conference telephone as well. Each capsule is created from bulletproof and energy resistant alloys and is able to lock securely from the inside. This is a precaution and a security measure to protect anyone sleeping from being surprised in his sleep by a potential base raid. Also all non-combat personel can secure themselves in their capsules until reinforcements arrive and the area is cleared (Sleeping capsules are tested to last 60 minutes of sustained fire).
Most of the capsules are placed on the upper floor (25 to be exact) as the lower floor is mostly filled with the other facilities.

OK, let the nit-picking begin! :D

Where you state there are 2 resident cooks, I suggest you replace it with a comment about rotating cooking duties for the 50 who use it. If the cooks are residents, they would take up living space as well. So just say that the various duties around the base include a cooking and/or cleanup shift every once in a while, similar to firefighters. When a cook has to go on a mission during their shift, they're waived from cooking as part of "hazard pay". ^_^ But you don't have to mention all that.

In the /real/ Xcom the LQ's have as I recall 8 bunkbeds; sleeping 16 at-a-time. 16 is /almost/ 1/3 of 50 indicating that Xcom uses "hotbunking" with 8-hour on-duties. Perhaps we can throw in some military terms like this as well.

Well, that appears to be info the player doesn't have to know.
I made them resident because I thought they'd go with the living quarters (their salary on the maintenance etc) Surely there are other personnel living in the base that don't ake up living space. For example, if there are no living quarters where do the radar operators, pilots, apethecarys etc live? they must either live in a nearby residential complex or in the base.

And trust me, making your scientists cook dinner is not a good idea :explode:

I'll see if I can think something up, but no guarantees. I'm not very familiar with military terms, especially foreign ones :)

The current model for the facility shows 12 bunks, maybe a few more along the walls. The 3 shift thing sounds good.

Yeah, you're right about the cooks, just stating there are cooking facilities is good enough. There would be other personnel I guess, unless everybody pulled an hour or two after their normal shift to clean stuff, etc. In this respect, the fewer specific details the better I guess.

Isn't there supposed to be a second floor? (I remember in Ufo that living quarters had 2 floors) In my description I implied that there are 10 beds in the first floor and 25 in the second. I can obviously make it 12 - 23, but just 12 is too few I think (50/3 = 16,6) and there obviously needs to be some extra beds for those suddenly sick or wounded etc. Edited by Historian

I uploaded the current version of the living quarters as an .rtf in the first post. I will update that with each change I make so anyone can check it out.

Bruenor as soon as you think there is nothing more to be changed you can pick that up for the Asset List.

Cheers!

I think we should have at least 20 beds, although 25 or 30 would be better. Remember that an operative's schedule has to be based around when the aliens come, not around when his sleeping shift is. The more beds, the less logistical questions the facility will raise.

The Living Quarter Facility was designed to fulfil exactly that need.
This sentance just doesn't seem right, even though it is probably correct. Mayb I'm just being werd.

My only complaint is that your paragraphs are formated weird. other than that, It's a great ctd.

Your ctd should be formated like this IMO

As our operations continue to expand so does our need for additional personnel to help us continue to operate at full efficiency. As a result, new residential facilities will be needed to accommodate our growing force. The Living Quarter Facility was designed to fulfil exactly that need.

Do this with the second paragraph and consolodate the last two sentances into one paragraph and it will be good enough to put in game IMO.

A trip aboard the skyranger can easily take four-five hours, sometimes more. An agent will have plenty of time to wake up, drink some coffee, and have a bagel during the trip. The only time that you'll need alot of beds is when the agents come home, and want to hit the hay. By then, you'd already have over half a day to change the working shifts, and have those beds ready.
The avenger would start some problems, though. It's so fast, that troops can be out and back in a few hours. You can't change shifts with that little time, and you'll have huge surges of living requirements. This is probably V1.+, but the Avenger and Lightning could require spare living quarter facilities, to handle having 26+ crew coming home and needing sleep at the same time.

 Man, I had to draw a picture to believe it. These rooms are barely big enough for a twin sized bed, and the 1.5M ceiling is barely enough for little people. I think I'll let the Japanese sleep in those rooms, and I'll just crash in the alien containment. :zzzzz: Edited by Robo Dojo 58

Think of it not as a room, but rather as a very big sleeping bag :)

Also, I was thinking of the door being on the side instead of the far end, and sliding open rather than twisting. This would allow for the bed to be longer and give some extra space. Edited by Historian

I dunno. I don't feel so comfortable with so many fullstops in the same sentence. Makes it seem fragmented.

Any second opinions?

Perhaps the capsule beds aren't needed. Looking at the facility model Vaaish made, it's very close to the 17 beds needed for each sleep shift. It would make sense to have a wall with lockers built into it, and a couple sinks/showers/toilets that are shared. If we need more space along walls for this, triple bunks can be used IMO.

The current model has 24 bunks set up for a 2 shift hot bunking and is only one story hign. It has a kitchen and no exercise area because of space contsraints.

Well, if I take out the capsules and the excersise area it seriously cuts down on the description.
We could always go with it as it is, ignoring the model, just for the kewlity factor

Or just say they use free weights and fold-up benches, so they're hidden when not in use. For example, you could say the floor panels can be lifted up in 2'x2' sections or something, and weights and other gear are stored there. Each person has a panel next to their bed for personal stuff as well. A rubber gasket keeps the compartments dry from occasional water from the showers and that type of thing. Just make the description explain why you can't see a few things and you're set.

Thanks for the clarification Vaaish!

So, should I mention the second floor as the description states or should I go with the model?
I'll make a quick change to check out later.

Update: Ok, here's a version without the capsules and the 2-floor design. I've also implied that the exercise equipment is storable and thus unseen. You will notice that it's smaller, mostly because I ran out of things to say about normal sleeping bunkers.
The original version (with the exercise equipment fixed) is at the top for comparison.

I'd still like to see the capsule version make it in (even without the 2-floor design, that's no biggie) even if the beds don't really look like capsules. Edited by Historian

The text should look more like this. If it sounds odd in some places, please remember, I just work here.
There seems to be no vents, I wonder what will happen if the cooks decide to make bean dip for lunch :)
Which reminds me, where the cooks sleep?
And two TVs for 50 people? The remotes must value their weight in gold :)
I just realized the sleeping capsules were not containing a bed. Sleeping in the washrooms must be really popular in Japan LOL And looking of the sizes for each individual capsule, they must hire small kids used to life in juvenile prison

While I don't have the textured model in final form there is at leat one good screenshot from when Drewid was texturing it that should give you a ver good visual understanding of the layout and accommodations to form your decriptions around.

Alright, from what I've been able to gather from the AWD barracks model (post #24 in the baseview assets thread), it is:

- only 1-story tall
- has only 1 screen
- fewer, far less private sleeping accommodations (more below)

Additionally, according to Vaaish:
I designed the barracks to comfortably house 48 with a 2 shift hotbunk setup.

the current setup for alien containment that I posted has room for 7 aliens in cryo and 2 in observation. I think it can stretch to 10 if needed, same as how the barracks holds 50.
From the model, I think there's 12 bunks, 2 soldiers each bunk. They swap during shifts ("2 shift hot bunk setup") for a total of 48 people accommodated. I could be mistaken, though; there might be 24 bunks (some are on the walls where the view is obstructed?), but the more I look at the model, the more obvious that it isn't the "comfortable life" that the text seems to suggest. It's rather spartan, really.

Unfortunately, it looks like the entire paragraph 3 (which is the bulk of the text) will have to be drastically changed or rewritten. Imho, this too might be up for a trip back to Active to bring it into compliance with the AWD model. :(

From the model, ech of the pds in the middle of the room holds 4 bunks. and built into the walls opposite of those is another 4 bunks. So that gives us a total 24 bunks per barracks facility and it is from before we started adding second stories... so it's 1 story

 • 1 year later...

I was looking at this text a while back to see what needed to be done. We seem to have a number conflict here, folks (among other things). Barracks are supposed to model how X-COM handles personnel: 50 individuals/structure. If we are using the hot-swap system with two shifts, then 25 bunks are necessary. This would require AWD to create a new version of this structure. Unfortunately, the model seems to be finished so... :(

While we are on the subject, are Xeno base modules supposed to have two floors or just one? From what I could find, it's only one. In the original X-COM, everything had two floors (4 for TFTD). It's hard enough cramming everything a LQ's has to offer into two floors, but cut that down to one and like Asty said:

... the more I look at the model, the more obvious that it isn't the "comfortable life" that the text seems to suggest. It's rather spartan, really.

Many of the other structures may also suffer the same fate (such as the Neural Shielding Facility text we are currently finishing up). Having structures which are two floors also makes a base defense mission more interesting IMHO. The whole thing boils down to time: is the AWD willing to invest more resources into making second stories? Probably not. In any case, AWD and CTD should work together (not against each other) as even a minor change in a model can have a profound impact on the text or visa-versa. ;)

AFAIK, there are 24 bunks (3 clusters of 8) another bunk somewhere else (a fold-out bed?). With a hot-swap system, all 50 occupants could be accommodated. Currently, it is only 1-story tall.

I don't know what constraints AWD are under, but if it is possible, adding a nearly identical 2nd floor might be something to consider.

Some random things I was thinking about for this text:

- Curtains for each bunk (if people are swapping throughout the day, sleep is important!)

- lights, cubbies, and small electronic devices on the ceilings of each bunk

- 3 fold-out/roll-out entertainment centers (TV, video games, extra tables), one per cluster of 8 beds

- extra closet space on the opposite sides of the beds (it's a little weird, but I can't imagine the beds being so wide)

Just a thought... are there bathrooms/showers anywhere?

Ok, Zombie, this is the next one.

And it's a hard one. I'm putting this back to active.

Ok, so it's 24 beds, 2 shifts -> 48 beds. All other facilities should be modified to hold only 48 people.

BARRACKS FACILITY

X-Net://Pegasus.net/Base/Facilities/Barracks

As our operations continue to expand, so does our need for additional personnel to help us continue working at full efficiency. As a result, new residential facilities are needed to accommodate our growing force and the Barracks Facility was designed to fulfill this need.

I would like a complete rephrase of this one: "As our operations expand need for additional personel arises. Barracks facilities provide living quarters for our personel."

The external walls are built from a heat-insulating polymer alloy, the construction of this room acts as protection from adverse environmental factors, keeping it at comfortable levels regardless of external influences. This, combined with the ergonomic design and built-in recreation facilities, creates a comfortable environment able to house up to 48 people.

Each Living Quarters Facility contains the following:

- A Small Galley Kitchen manned by two cooks who prepare meals served at the end of each shift. problematic. where do they live, what do they eat? Who pays them?

- Exercise equipment, such as weights, fold-up benches and bicycles, all stored in specific compartments when not in use. Personnel are required to spend at least two hours a day exercising in order to remain in good physical condition. The requirement for X-Corps Special Operatives is increased to at least three hours a day, if not already assigned to a mission or wounded.

- A Recreation/Living room equipped with two plasma screen televisions, computers with Internet access, pool and ping-pong tables and other miscellaneous recreational materials. This equipment may seem a little extravagant to the casual observer, but X-Corps recognizes that our operatives need to relax after the rigors and long hours of duty.

- Sleeping accommodations are similar to Japanese "capsule hotel" beds. There are in total 24 soundproof capsules which will be occupied in two shifts. Each capsule sizes 1.5m x 1.5m x 3m and contains a confortable bed, lockers and a videoconference telephone. Each capsule is created using bulletproof and energy resistant alloys and can be locked securely from the inside. This is a security measure meant to protect anyone from being surprised in his sleep during a base raid. Also, all non-combat personnel can secure themselves in their capsules until reinforcements arrive and the area is cleared. The sleeping capsules are tested to resist more than 60 minutes of sustained fire.

Most of the Facility's capsules are placed on the upper floor (43 to be exact), as the lower floor is mostly reserved for the other facilities.

Each base that requires resident personnel, such as soldiers, scientists, or engineers must include at least one Barracks Facility.

Sow, where do they wash their athletic bodies...? ;)

Eeeew. This one is gonna be a total headache.

Basically, the way the structure is rendered there is no possible way in he!! that all this stuff can be crammed into 1 story. The beds take up almost all the space with just a tiny corner in the top left for what I assume is a couch of some sort, a TV and what looks like a tiny kitchen.

Some thoughts:

1) Kitchen. Can't be manned by two full-time cooks. The personnel do their own cooking like firefighters do. That explains the cost and living requirements. (BTW, has anyone seen a kitchen in a firehouse? It's huge. That's because those guys get really hungry and eat lots of food. More food = large kitchen. Heck, invite 24 people over to your house for a meal and you'll understand in a hurry how much food has to be prepared). What about refrigeration? Or ovens? Or stoves? Or pots, pans, kettles, utensils? Or cabinets? Or a pantry for dry-goods/cans? Where does all that go? Hmm?

I suppose you could cater all the food in, but that's expensive and a liability in case the caterers let slip the location of your top-secret base. MRE's (meals ready to eat) are another alternative to this food crisis, but morale runs low on this type of provision.

2) Excersise. Where does the equipment go? Under the beds perhaps. You could get away with forcing your soldiers to run around the base for cardio health, and for the strength training push-ups and sit-ups do wonders. These activities require no equipment. But for weight training you would need weights of some sort.

3) Living area. Way too small to fit all the stuff in. You could have a multi-purpose table which converts into a pool table, ping-pong, table sport games such as soccer, or playing card games, but where does the table go? It's pretty big. PC's for internet? I'd opt for handheld devices as they require no room and can be connected to a common wireless server. It's ironic that "X-Corps recognizes that our operatives need to relax after the rigors and long hours of duty" yet provides no room to do so.

4) Sleeping accomodations. Needs a total rewrite. As Vaaish pointed out, there are no sleepong pods, only beds. Non-combat personnel are evacuated from a base in case of attack so we don't need to worry about them. Only the soldiers stay to defend.

5) Bathrooms. "I'm sorry, but at this time X-Corps does not have the room necessary for personal hygene in a base. Toilets take up too much space so everyone must do #1 and #2 in a pail and haul it up to the surface for disposal. We do not offer shower stalls or bathtubs either so personnel must take sponge baths. Thank you."

With the potential to house 48 people, you must make restroom accomodations for at least half of them. That means 4 toilets, 4 sinks and 4 shower stalls. Not everyone will use a bathroom at once, but during shift changes I'll wager to bet bathroom space is at a premium. (Think of a college dorm). Seriously, I can't come up with anything for this one. I guess there is a little bit of space on the south wall for some rudimentary facilities but they will be very cramped.

I'm not a fan of the hot-swap system in this instance as the first shifters will be making noise in the living area while the second shifters are trying to get some sleep. Shared living space is not very good unless the two areas are isolated from each other.

I guess I'm just blowing smoke on this text. I never complained that the original game only had 20 beds and sparse living areas. (It didn't have bathrooms or a kitchen either). And they had no problems cramming 50 people in one structure. So who's saying that we have to only have room for 48 people instead of 50? And who is gonna care where those 2 spend the night? But at least the original game was more believable as the two areas were isolated from each other and the text didn't go into much detail. ;)

This text belongs in active as it needs some major attention. However, it's not a simple proofreading to complete. You do realize that getting this text up to snuff will require lots of time and it probably will not be ready for the next iteration anyway, correct? :P

Yap. I do. We'll have to stay positive and think creative... :)

#2) Right. this is a problem. maybe we can get away with rubber bands...? :)

#3) Table: multi purpose, it's already there; Living area can be "sealed off" using "inflatable" walls you can pull out of the facility walls; PC's: every bunk feratures a slim client with VoIP, internet and Multimedia capabilities

#4) There are sleeping pods which can be sealed off with a sound proof shutter sliding out of the bunks "roof", providing not only undisturbed sleep but also privacy for phone calls... aaand other stuff. ;)

#5) Since we all agree ( ;) ) that there is no need for lockers, or that the lockers are inside the bunk, there is room for a combined toilet, bathroom with shower at the "corridor end" of each bunk cluster. four people per shift will have to share these facilities. That's possible.

So no need to blow smoke... :) If there's a problem there are always solutions. :)

What do you think? :)

BARRACKS FACILITY

As our operations expand need for additional personel arises. Barracks facilities provide living quarters for our personel. X-Corps recognizes the need for rested, relaxed personel - this is why a lot of effort was put into making accomodations as comfortable as possible within the very restrictive space our base design is able to offer.

This, combined with the ergonomic design and built-in recreation facilities, creates a comfortable environment able to house up to 48 people.

Each Baracks Facility contains the following:

- A small galley kitchen, allowing the personel to cook meals for themselves

- A disseverable recreation/living room equipped with home cinema equipment and a convertable multi purpose table allowing usage as dining, pool or ping-pong table.

"Disseverable" is broken down into "dis" and "severable" both which are words. However, most dictionaries never define words with the prefix "dis" because the combination is usually a nonce word. There is no harm in using it though as the definition is understood. ;)

* Well... that's the point! What I had in mind was something like the following three ideas: “Walls > like windows”, “Walls > like garage-doors”, “Wall-looking devices integrated on the >, covering the empty space behind them”. I know, my explanations suck, unfortunately I cannot describe it any better :(

** A “Geothermal underfloor heating system” idea came in mind... I didn't add it cause I guess the rest of the base also has such a system :P

*** That was just an idea, don't worry... but think of it... that screen works as a home cinema, but isn't it a total waste if it isn't used in other means? *alert – ALIEN INFILTRATION DETECTED!*, “Dr. Schweinzechtrein needed in the labs”, “-Hey Joe, how many hours have you practised the last week? - One sec, let me check...”. Nice, isn't it? xD

I think this needs to be reworded to something like the following:

A big interactive monitor not only provides information such as schedules or announcements, but also serves as an ultra high definition home theater screen.

Or somethig like that. I like the rest though. :)
