Our initial intelligence reports that aliens are using highly advanced craft and armaments, their movements are seemingly erratic and their motives unknown. Conventional weapons seem highly innefective against them while our toughest armor hardly matters.
Against these impossible odds our greatest and only weapon is science.

Since we are not familiar with any of the alien technology, we have designed laboratories that will cover all the aspects of modern science that we are bound to encounter.
The Laboratory is designed as a 15 x 15m room over two floors and contains different types of R&D areas separated,if needed, with soundproof movable plexiglass. If required the lab has such a design that is easily customized to focus on one specific subject. As such, up to 50 scientist can be employed by a single laboratory, usualy working in 3 shifts.

The lower floor is designed to research the alien technology such as their incredible metallic alloys or the function of their weapons. Here lies the Psysics Lab, the Chemical Laboratory and a powerful supercomputer which is linked with the central Mainframe of our Base.
The upper floor mostly deals with the "dirty" work. Here the aliens themselves will be analyzed and questioned in any way possible. This floor contains the Interrogation room, the Bio-Research and engineering lab, a small Alien containment chamber for those captured alive and a Morgue for those who were not.

Although we don't know what we're up to, we're definately determined to find out

OK, I guess that since noone reply's I've got it right the first time.
Anyway, here's the final rtf version. If anyone's got any comments, they're welcome as always :) Edited by Historian

Btw Breunor, I've noticed that you've updated the Living Quarters and Workshop entry in the asset list but not the laboratory. How come?

Because my all-knowing, cosmic presence happened to miss this one.... :D

I'll add this in to the list too.

As to the physical descriptions, I don't think players will have access to a second floor on these facilities in the battlescape, so perhaps you should remove which floors each area is on, and instead state 'our labs are fitted with the equipment needed to study the following areas', etc.

I like your last line, "Although we don't know what we're up to, we're definately determined to find out." :devillaugh:

ROFL MAN!! :alienlol: :devillaugh:

Will you believe that I wrote that and thought it read
"Although we don't know what we're up against, we're definitely determined to find out." :whatwhat:

I only noticed the implications of what I wrote after you mentioned it. It's Friggin hilarious

Anyway should I change it, or is it just that good? :D Edited by Historian

Based on this I changed the relevant text to an unrestricted/restricted sector concept. Here it is

Against these impossible odds our greatest and only weapon is science.

Here lies the Physics Lab, the Chemical Laboratory and a powerful supercomputer, which is linked with the central Mainframe of our base and allows the flow of information through our own private Network [Possible network name: Nex? (Backward Xen from Xenocide) – Some nice possible research hooks for v1+ here].
- The restricted area is strictly off limits to non-scientists or high-ranking officers, and deals primarily with the "dirty" work such as alien autopsies and questioning. Procedures and experiments conducted within are not to be shared to unauthorzed personnel.
This sector contains the Interrogation room, the Bioresearch and engineering lab, a small Alien containment chamber for those captured alive and a Morgue for those who were not.

As you can see I changed the concept to a more militaristic and xenophobic feeling. What do you think? Edited by Historian

I like it, that sounds very good. You could actually have both lines from your previous post, start with the "we don't know what we're up to" as a quote from a rookie scientist, and then have the "up against" as the more official line later on. If not both, then I'd suggest keeping the "up to" version, that was good. :D

Oooo nice. Something like a play on words from a jovial rookie after a long and boring briefing.
I like! I like so much that I'll ditch my original flavor text (it wasn't that good anyway :) ) and put this in the beggining. A player will read it ang go :huh?: and then realization will dawn on him after he reads the closing paragraph :)

Weeee :happybanana:

They may be separate but you research live aliens so it is quite possible that the alien is transferred temporarily to the lab for study. (In the art description, it states that there is a small alien containment unit in the laboratory). Edited by Historian

I uploaded the current version of the laboratory as an .rtf in the first post. I will update that with each change I make so anyone can check it out.

Bruenor as soon as you think there is nothing more to be changed you can pick that up for the Asset List.

Cheers!

LABORATORY FACILITY
X-Net://Pegasus.net/Base/Facilities/Laboratory

Our initial intelligence reports that the Aliens are using highly advanced craft and armaments, their movements are seemingly erratic, and their motives unknown. Conventional weapons seem highly ineffective against them while our toughest armor is cut through easily by Alien weaponry. Against these almost impossible odds our greatest and only weapon is science.

Since we are not familiar with any of the Alien technology, we have designed laboratories that will cover all the aspects of modern science that we are bound to encounter in Alien technology. The Laboratory is designed as a 15 x 15m room over two floors and contains different types of R&D areas separated, if needed, with soundproof movable Plexiglas. If required, the lab has such a design that is easily customized to focus on one specific subject. As such, up to 50 scientists can be employed by a single laboratory, usually working in three separate 8-hour shifts.

The Laboratory is further divided into two separate sectors:
- The unrestricted area is accessible to all personnel and is designed to research the Alien technology such as their incredible metallic alloys or the function of their weapons. Here lies the Physics Lab, the Chemical Laboratory and a powerful supercomputer, which is linked with the central Mainframe of our base and allows the flow of information through our own private Network: PegasusNet.
- The restricted area is strictly off limits to all but trained interrogation officers and scientists, and deals primarily with the "dirty" work such as Alien autopsies and questioning. Procedures and experiments conducted within this section of the lab are not to be shared with unauthorized personnel.

This sector also contains the Interrogation room, the Bioresearch/Engineering lab, a small Alien containment chamber for living Aliens to be interrogated and a morgue for those who were found dead. The Alien Containment chamber is not designed to keep Aliens alive for a period longer than six hours; study of live Alien creatures will have to be conducted on a properly suited Alien Containment Facility.

Oy, the Research Facility's AWD models (posts #3 and 4 in the baseview assets thread) are totally different than what's in the text. :sorry:

At first glance, the model:

- is 1-story tall, not 2-stories tall (paragraph 2)
- is 25m x 25m, not 15m x 15m (para. 2)
- is not divided into two separate sectors (para. 3). Well, on second thought, this could be true, but it'd be better described as a smaller restricted area rather than a separate sector, and this area doesn't look like it can accommodate autopsies as mentioned in the text
- has no Physics or Chemistry Lab (para. 3)
- has lots of counters and a large table, plus whatever props are added later

Unfortunately, there is a great deal of disparity between the text and the model- I hate to be a broken record today, but I think this needs a jaunt back to Active to work out these differences: most of the text needs changing or rewriting. :( Edited by Astyanax

Conventional weapons seem highly ineffective against them, while our toughest armor is cut through easily by Alien weaponry. Against these almost impossible odds our greatest and only weapon is science.

Since we are not familiar with any of the Alien technology, our laboratories have to cover all aspects of modern science. Due to the base module size restrictions of 25x25 meters, the research area was conceptualized as an adaptable workspace.  The laboratory has a design that is easily customized to focus on one specific subject. As such, up to 50 scientists can be employed by a single laboratory, usually working in three separate 8-hour shifts.

The room itself features a large, L-shaped workbench in the center with a flat surface. Connections for easy access to distilled water, electrical power, laboratory gases and a vacuum exhaust system are integrated into the sides of the table at regular intervals. This table is the main research area. The storage space under the table holds devices and modules that allow the table to be customized for many different working conditions. Sterile laminar-flow hoods for biological research are just as easily set up as electrostatically shielded mats for sensitive electronics or shielded remote-controlled workspaces for hazardous materials.

In one corner of the lab a large interactive screen is used to keep track of workflow, assignment of specific tasks and results. If necessary, additional mobile terminal devices with wireless connections can turn the room into a computerized think-tank.

A feature that is quite novel for a laboratory environment is the high-security area. Since we need to examine live specimens of the Alien lifeforms, this corner of the room is a small alien containment in itself, but with added analysis capabilities. Integrated into the walls of the containment space are a multitude of sensory devices that include passive acoustic (ranging from infra- to ultrasound) and optic (ranging from IR to UV) sensors, but also active scanners including Roentgen emitters and electrical conductivity testers. It is highly advisable not to remain in the high-security area while tests are in progress.

With this design and modular equipment, the X-Corps laboratory module should be more than capable of facing the scientific war that is ahead. However, it should be noted that no lab can function without scientists, and scientists can only work as fast as humanly possible. For maximum research speed, building several labs and staffing them with enough scientists is recommended.

Some nice stuff there, Ghost. Thanks for the input - almost all of them are represented. :)

I fooled around with paragraph 3 (and especially sentence 3) a bit to cut down on the useage of "table", among other things. Not sure about the bluetooth wireless mention, so I left it in. Mad can inform us if this is ok. =b

Just my humble opinion, but thinking of the existing work we've done, I think that we should forgo any reference to real-life organizations/services/brands etc etc. In addition, bluetooth is a typical everyday technology, X-Corps needs an improved framework on everything.

Sorry boys for not writing much atm, Internet is dead slow here and If everything works bad - a I think it will, I won't have any from Monday this week 'till monday the week after.

Agreed to Kafros - Bluetooth is an explicied technology not used today, let's not get too specific on technologies and names for those, exepct of course you invent it and it fit's into frame. :)

LABORATORY FACILITY

X-Net://Pegasus.net/Base/Facilities/Laboratory

Our initial intelligence reports tell us that the Aliens are using highly advanced craft and armaments; their movements are seemingly erratic, and their motives unknown. Conventional weapons seem ineffective against them and our toughest armor is easily penetrated by their weaponry. Against these almost impossible odds our greatest and only weapon is science.

Since we are not familiar with any of the Alien technology, our laboratories have to cover all aspects of modern science. Due to the base module size restrictions of 25x25 meters, the research area was conceptualized as an adaptable workspace. The laboratory has a design that is easily customized to focus on one specific subject or several smaller ones. Up to 50 scientists, usually organized in three 8-hour shifts, can work in a single laboratory.

When not in use, this facility features little furniture, only a large, L-shaped workbench with a featureless flat surface in the center. Connections for easy access to distilled water, electrical power, laboratory gases and a vacuum exhaust system are integrated into the sides of the counter at regular intervals. This table is the centre of our research module and for convenience there is storage space under it to hold the multitude of devices and instruments that allow it to be customized for many different tasks. Sterile laminar air-flow hoods for biological research are just as easily set up as anti-electrostatic mats for sensitive electronics or shielded remote-controlled workspaces for hazardous materials.

In one corner of the lab a large interactive screen allows easy tracking of workflow, assignment of specific tasks and shows current research results. If necessary, additional mobile terminal handheld devices with six gigabit, bluetootha relatively new technology; Firenet™ wireless connections can turn the room into a highly advanced thinking machinecomputerized think-tank. (computerized sounds like the computers are taking over :P)

Since we may need to examine live specimens, a high security area is included in the laboratory's layout. It features a small alien containment with added analysis capabilities: Integrated into the walls of the containment space are sensory devices that include passive acoustic (ranging from infra- to ultrasound) and optic (ranging from IR to UV) sensors, but also active scanners such as Roentgen emitters and electrical conductivity testers. It is therefore highly advisable not to remain in the high-security area while tests are in progress.

I just didn't like the way the last sentence in paragraph 4 sounded, so I did some minor chopping to make it flow better. And I think we should come up with something better than "thinking machine" without making it sound too computerized. Any ideas?:wink1:

hmm...im thinking that is going a little too far....maybe im wrong...

"wireless connections can effectively turn the room into a giant super-computer"

"wireless connections can effectively mobilise research across the base"

"wireless connections can effectively enable the researchersScientists to have computing power in the palm of their hand"

Somthing like them... :D

I like the third one. Idea:

"wireless connections provide the scientists with an efficient WLAN layout", or something similar.

Zombie and ghost, sorry for not being online the last weeks, but I've just bought my new PC (that beast roars...) and I am preparing to move to Athens at the end of the month. In addition, I have to complete my registration in the university and (of course) get all the needed "papers" before that....

Da Univesrity... xD

Anyway, whatever you need, send me a PM. I hope I'll soon be with you again :)

Well "layout" is out of place there - Wireless Local Area Network Layout....Maybe "...with an efficient Network in the palm of their hands

I donno i will look closely when i have time

Nice point, and although I like the idea of yours, there is a problem:

Scientists can only work INSIDE the lab. If they can access the Base Network (which means they can access it from anywhere), then why can't they conduct research on their laptops? Ok, you cannot dissect a Silabrate in the Living quarters, but you can run effective simulations for various items (Laser weapons, "stun bombs", motion detector etc etc etc). In addition, someone could study available intelligence and i.e. work on the Alien Goal CT. Good idea, but bad for v1-...

Concerning the Neural Network, it's just another means of producing artificial intelligence. In addition, bigger NNs don't mean smarter computers. In RL there is a pitiful limit on their ability, whatever memory or CPU power you may provide.

Why don't we try something different?! Like this:

In one corner of the lab a large interactive screen allows easy tracking of workflow, assignment of specific tasks and shows current research results. If addition, wireless connention nodes integrated inside the workbences (tables? research tables?) provide the scientists a lighting fast means of information exchange for optimal storage and processing (something different?)

Edit #2: Some spelling corrections made above, now I hope that someone can actually understand what I said, I couldn't even... understand myself xD :P

Edit #3: Argh, even more changes... My english skills get rusty, I really have to practise more :P

Those parentheses aren't important. Optic IS "from IR to UV", it's redundant to describe it.

Excelent choice of Pink font :P

"which acts as the focal point of the whole module" - i think this makes the sentence too long and is unnecessary as in the next few sentences the person gathers that this is the centre of the facility :P

Great stuff on everything else

hmm, it does seem to be just the three of us, i will help post in some of the others 2moro after college (tired now) O wait im going for a job interview so probably saturday

The röntgen was occasionally used to measure exposure to radiation in other forms than X-rays or gamma rays, they are not widely used anymore so we should use something else...again maybe make up a technology! p.s. rontgens arent emitters :P
