frosty-theaussie
Nice price, so I bought/downloaded it. I never really got TFTD, hence my reason for buying it, and it's a damn stretch harder than UFO Defense!
TherilAlPenn
yeah but it has some Resolution problemsPete says this medicine works...I should try that. It looks like it's running in some super-letterboxed 320x480 resolution or something, which makes the aspect ratio really screwy. Actually, I'd rather just play it in Wine so that I could run either windowed or fullscreen, but for some reason the keyboard doesn't work for entering base names. And having to reboot my computer twice whenever I want to make a new base doesn't thrill me. It looks correct in fullscreen though. Edit: Heh, didn't realize I never posted before (looks at joined date) Edited May 9, 2007 by TherilAlPenn
Mustang
I started a game on Veteran. I lost 5 soldiers on the first mission, it was a crash site with 3 aliens. Seems like TFTD

Seems like TFTD I never played TFTD before, but I'm starting to think I should've put it on a harder difficulty than beginner. So far the only thing (in battlescape) that has given me trouble is lobstermen on a cargo ship mission, which seemed to be more or less invulnerable to everything I brought with me. 8 gauss hits, a magna-blast grenade, and a sonic cannon hit wasn't enough, so I ran away. About the only things I didn't try were my tazers. My score kinda sucks right now though, so maybe beginner isn't so bad.

About the only things I didn't try were my tazers., that's what you should have tried as Lobbie men take 1.1x the normal stun damage. Thermal Shok Launchers also work wonderfully. Once you find the drills, Lobstermen are a cakewalk. Still, you have to get right up to them to use it, but a poke or two is all it takes. - Zombie
TherilAlPenn
yeah but it has some Resolution problemsPete says this medicine works... Doesn't help me, even setting it to the proper display mode via QRes shortcut doesn't actually get my monitor to do what it is supposed to. Probably a monitor driver problem. Too bad about the keyboard problem that keeps me from playing it in Wine.
frosty-theaussie
I started a game on Veteran. I lost 5 soldiers on the first mission, it was a crash site with 3 aliens. Seems like TFTD I lost my entire crew on the first, the second, and the third. The worst mission was where I sent two teams on opposing flanks of the map. One Alien grenade literally wiped out another team, which made the other team panic. The solider holding the torpedo launcher fired and wiped out the entire team. Mission over! Mission over!Yeah, those sonic pulsers seem even stronger than the original alien grenades, and the aliens give me tons of them now. Since I'm lacking any other explosive weapons (for the most part), they're coming in quite handy. And I'm glad to see my prime->throw->catch->throw tactic still works. Mustang
Tasoths and Lobstermen in the third month. reckoner
Just a word of warning, the Steam version of this game does not work with Vista. Or at least it didn't a few days ago. You're better off finding a DOS version of TFTD and using DOSBOX, and then patching it with the patch you can find on Atari's website. It works perfectly on my vista ultimate setup. You can even run it windowed, or full screen. I love this game, it's timeless.
Sorrow
Could someone tell me what is this Steam thing, please?
reckoner
Most people first encountered Steam when they installed Half-Life 2. You cannot play Half Life 2 without Steam, unless you're using some cracked pirated version. In a nutshell; It's a "platform", that consists of an application that launches games such has Half Life 2, X-Com Terror From the Deep. But it can also be used to purchase and download games. www.steampowered.com
Sorrow
Hmm...I recall my friend mentioning it...She couldn't play original HL2 because Steam thought it was pirated. Anyway, the idea of downloading games sounds interesting...Does it does it eat system resources and slow down the games?Does it require an internet acces to run the games (i.e. will it work without internet or when the Steam website is down?) TherilAlPenn
Does it does it eat system resources and slow down the games? Not for me, around 4 MB working set while idle, and I've never seen it use CPU except while starting/updating/being interacted with. It would be awfully silly if it could slow down something like XCom 2 noticeably. Does it require an internet acces to run the games (i.e. will it work without internet or when the Steam website is down?) It will try to connect when you start the game, but if it can't it will go into offline mode and let you play anyway. I haven't tried installing a Steam game like HL2 without internet access (but for a download-only game like XCom2 that doesn't matter), so I don't know if that works. MannPower
I am unsure if this has been addressed before, but my forum search did not turn up any relevant results - I apologize if it's already been discussed. At any rate, does the Steam version of TFTD - released by 2K - contain fixes for the common game-stopping bugs in the game? Or is it exactly the same as the original, modified for distribution over the internet? I'm contemplating whether to buy it, or just install my original copy. Thanks. F.O.D.
So, at the moment the entire XCOM series seem to be available on Steam. Read about some scary stuff about some countries not being able to get it for some strange internet-ish reason but in Greece it seems to work just fine
Scrogdog
You can also purchase a five game bundle, or each game individually from direct2drive. The only one I've played so far is Enemy Unknown (X-Com 1) and it's the dosbox version at 1.4. With direct2drive you just download and play. You don't need anything running from d2d to play.
