[[Micah]]
It was archive.org. My logs show there have been 5 different googlebots here in the last 24 hours. I think there are 8 total, so tying up 5 must be pretty good.
[stewart]
compare number of hits of "xcomufo" with "xcom tactical command" on google; that says it all
j'ordos
Heh, now it's emailing topics? What if it's an XTC spy, trying to discover our latest solutions to all those getting-xcom-to-run-on-new-computer-problems?
Robo Dojo 58
*gasp*!! What if it's mailing spam? :o
Breunor
I think it's an interesting observation that so many comments about automated technology are suspicious and negative in nature. I guess the average person doesn't trust such things these days due to the extensive abuse of such tech for spam, trojans, and the general 'corporate vileness' pervasive in many places. I wonder if we'd all have positive views of Googlebot if it were about 7 years ago, before there were so many negative aspects in the public consciousness? centurion
Are you saying that not everything created with the help of machine tools is evil? j/k Now seriously, do you think people would not regard something like this topic email-capable Googlebot with suspicion when they knew less about the possible ways to misuse it? I mean, if you see an animal that does not behave as something you know (and like), do you feel curiosity/sympathy or reservation? And besides, mock vilification is much more fun. It's just a machine, after all. (No offense, S.E.L.F. )
Breunor
I think it's an interesting observation that so many comments about automated technology are suspicious and negative in nature.Well, if it's doing what it's supposed to do, why talk about it? It's just a machine, after all. (No offense, S.E.L.F. ) But the question is whether it's intended or actual use is EVIL , and therefore should we inherently mitrust it? Good point centurion, the unknown can evoke fear:anger. I think the reason we see it in the email section is because it just tests every single link on every single page, and on a system like this there are tons of links to traverse. I wounder how quickly it moves through everything, as it documents what it finds? I wonder if the FBI or some other government agencies in the US or elsewhere have started modding googlebot functions to include word filters, so they can automate the search for illegal activity? Now this page will likely be logged since I mentioned the eff-bee-eye... oops!
[[Micah]]
Google isn't emailing anybody, people. Simply by the bot's following the "email this member" link in its crawling process, the board lists it as having followed that link, but it receives a rejection from the board because the googlebot user group has no priviledges to email.
