Any Need For Second Sonar?

No, only one of each sonar type works at any given time per base. So four large sonars will only give you the benefits of one large sonar, but you still have to pay maintenance on all 4.

The transmission resolver trumps all the sonars, so you only need the one. A small and large sonar do work together though, so if you want the best detection before you get the resolver, you can use a small and large sonar combo.

Well, according to the research NKF did into radars, the stats may be wrong. At least for Enemy Unknown, the chances for detection don't increase as you add more radar systems of the same type. (The attributes do not "stack"). However, facilities of different types have abilities which stack to increase detection rate. But as before, the Transmission Resolver trumps all the standard radars so once you have this built the other detection facilities are useless. ;)

It may look like they stack, but from the digging NKF did on the game files, sonars/radars of the same type do not really stack:

When referring to your base details, you will see two bars representing the long and short range radars. The short range bar increases for every small radar system, and the long range bar increases for every Large Radar system and Hyperwave decoder.

Although you are presented with this information, it is highly inaccurate and should never be relied on. The listing only counts how many radars are currently assigned to the base as opposed to the base's actual ability to locate enemy ships.

To see the nitty gritty about this situation, please visit NKF's Talk Page in the X-COM Wikipedia. :wink1:

i'll explain it a little bit, in case you don't want to visit the site

there are three ratings radars can have

Short Range detection

Long Range Detection

Hyper Wave decoder

Short range radar is something like

SRD: 2

LRD: 1

HWD: 0

Long range radar is something like

SRD: 1

LRD: 3

HWD: 0

Hyper wave decoder is

HWD: 100, with the longest range and 100% detection

Now, the effects of Short range radar and Long range radar do combine. So having one of each helps. However, two long range radars don't combine

of course, they'll combine with HWD as well, but since HWD is 100% detection and longer range, there really is no point to doing so unless you have money you'd like to spend on maintanance because you feel rich or something

  • 2 years later...

We've done a lot of research into how detection works since this thread began. It's confirmed by others that only one of each type work, and building more of the same only costs you money. Build both a small and large sonar for the best benefits until you can build the transmission resolver.

Then again, there is still one reason to use multiple sonar of the same type, and that's if you want to use the sonar's battlescape map for when the base gets attacked.
