Okay, this has probably been mentioned before and maybe should be in the labs but here goes anyways.

Are we gonna have some of the more modern weaponry? (i know youve used the same weapons and changed the description a bit to make them modern though)

For instance fibre optics and guns with cameras. The ranged HE bullets for normal sized rifles. 'hive cartridges'. and other cool modern weaponry that is actually in the final stages now. It would be a bit embarrising if the worlds best anti alien force was armed with the old rusted technology wouldn't it.

we are planing some time ahead. But not much. I doubt we get granade launchers. Unless the aliens get something too.

The aliens get stun/small launchers.

Wasn't there an idea floating around that said to give the small launcher the ability to shoot explosive projectiles?

I just thought it would be a bit dumb to have a multi billion pound force armed with a couple of stone age guns and blunt toothpicks

I dont think theres much harm in saying you have a lot of cool stuff but not actually changing it too much. I.e you could talk about lightwieght build materials special bullets, high definition scopes and stuff, but at the end of the day the gun still goes bang.

Don't forget that the aliens will be 10 years more advanced now so it shoul balance out :D

The same list of weapons will be used along with their stats for gameplay balance issues. We know it worked well in xcom, so that removes a chunk of time needed to playtest. However the actual weapons will be move advanced. For example, the OICW will be the basis for the rifle. The fancy scope and all that stuff will be there, but in game there is only 1 ammo type to fire and you won't be able to stick the gun around a corner and fire on targets via the helmet hud. The reason is the amount of work needed to add that to the game is excessive. If we had a couple dozen more programmers and regular modellers who were available to do all the extra work, we might look at some extra features, but even then we'd aim for an earlier release followed by advanced features. So no matter what the workforce situation, version 1 will focus on maintaining the "known equation" to minimize the time needed to complete it.

"If it ain't broke, don't try and fix it. You'll only make it more broke." Simon Havarian, X-Corps engineering division, refering to the design of the laser rifle.

:)

But yeah, while our rifle may have some cursory resembelence to the OICW/XM-8, it will not use the same stats nor have the same abilities. (Just reiterating what Bruenor said.)

without the 20mm grenade launcher the oicw is just a run of the mill heckler & koch, cant remember which one but its in the whole hk33 series of rollerlocked rifles.
Bullpup is the right way to go alright (magazine behind the grip).
Caseless possibly, but if you have a nice animation of brass popping out of the ejector all is forgiven :D
Just make sure to eith have a large magazine if the round is going to be caseless or small caliber, (50+) or if its going to be a standard sized round keep a 30 mag or bigger, with fast firing and male chicken-eyed agents we could get a few tons of lead into the air without messing up game balance!!

The OICW's kenetic energy component is based on the G36. The g36 is a standard gas operated rifle and does not use the rollerlock design.

I think that what we are leaning towards with the autocannon equivalent weapon is a semi or fully automatic grenade launcher, like the OICW aswell.

But can I buck him in the city so I never lose?
See I'm a get him in the crowd with a couple heavies
And lay the barrel to the ground, hold the gat steady
And now I'm ready for my adversary, talk is cheap
I'm looking for a way to make a plan gonna keep it neat
So don't be telling me to get the non-violent spirit

heck, youre right, i just looked it up, the picture i have of the OICW has a completely different rifle attached to it an a rounder smoother body, i think im gonna go and try find out what it is, but its a picture of it dissasembled and it looks like a short hk33 minus the retractable stock, it sits into the plastic body underneath the GL just like the OICW though.

any ideas?

(male chicken-eyed? i didnt write that!!)

There have been a few developmental stages to the OICW- and there were two competing designs. There's the Alliant Techsystems OICW and the AAI OICW. The rifle underneathe them is the HK xm8- and the receiver of that rifle has gone through a few different incarnations. It currently looks like a toy raygun. The xm8 receiver for the OICW looks kind of like the g36 with a shaved top or the later variants of the g3 series of rifles.

ive seen the xm-8 before, this is nothing like it, i reckon it must be an early mockup or something, the more i look at the less it looks like an actual working model

I guess my point was that the xm8 looks like a lot of different things depending on which xm8 you're looking at. Hypothetically speaking, the receiver itself could look like anything that could fit the xm8 inside of it. But, as you said, it is also possible that's it's just a model.

the rifle is real alright, but the GL section looks very much like a model, the whole thing look "light" if you know what i mean.

And the idea is to use the grenade launcher as a kind of secondary function? Seeing that the OICW's 20mm launcher primarily fires light anti-personnel rounds (or so I think), I don't think that it would mess up the game balence too much. Just a heavier punch at the expense of, say, more TUs being used, maybe?

I like the idea of the OICW perhaps going into the game--match some appropriately cool-looking gear and you have a totally killer, original look for our soldiers.

Trendy, baby.

Nope. A magazine loaded grenade launcher will probably be the autocannon without the KE part of the OICW. We cite the OICW because it is the only magazine loaded grenade launcher that fires very small grenades semiautomatically.
