What about makeing the old X-Com games runable on the new Playstation Portable. It would be perfect, just think of playing xcom while ur on the buss or train :)

I don't know anything about programing and I'm pretty much not understanding a thing about any type of code except php and html LOL but I would really love to see the origional games and of course UFO 2k on the PSP :D

There is (in my knowledge) several dos emulators for PSP like DosBox and FreeDos but both are extremely slow so running anytype of dos game that way isn't really playable :(

The Psp also has a wan network which would rock with multiplayer :D both PSP to PSP and PSP to Internet.

Anyway ive seen some old Scumm games on psp and I just played a little Secret of monkey island, it runs without problems, maybe something like the scumm emulater for xcom would do the trick.

The PSP itself is strong enough, it runs at 222mhz and can be overclocked up to 333mhz without problems. I think this is a great Idea since I'm a really big fan and terror from the deep is still the best game ive ever played, so anyone who makes my dream come true is my hero :D

Edit --- I think this topic might have been missplaced, sorry if thats the case :/

Edit 2 --- lua player for psp, dunno if it could help http://www.luaplayer.org/

Good idea, but you're forgetting something.

I'm a Nintendo Fanboy and would probably attempt to sabotage the project.

Having a portable original x-com is a good idea, but that's out of our scope due to copyright issues. We are trying to make a new game, though it is obviously heavily inspired by the original x-com. UFO2000 still can't run without the copyrighted graphics from x-com, but that will be resolved very soon as we already have a free replacement for almost everything needed by the game now.

About portable version of UFO2000, we will probably first make a port to Nokia 770, just because it is much easier to do as it uses linux. It has hardware specs similar to PSP, so after port to Nokia 770 is finished, we can think about PSP support as well. Anyway, in order to make support for portable devices, we need at least one developer having such device, otherwise testing and debugging will be a nightmare.

And here are some interesting links related to portable x-com:
1. The creators of the original x-com made a new game for GBA: http://rebelstar.namco.com/
2. Some russian guys are making an almost exact x-com clone for PocketPC: http://www.ppcvault..../20/pocket-ufo/

If you start porting the ufo2k for psp, I will help in anyway that I can, LOL which isn't much except using my psp as a guinepigg :) I'm really looking forward for a portable x-com, one more thing about the psp if you didn't know you will have to downgrade it to be able to run homebrew games etc. So if someone is going to get one check so that it "isn't" firmware 2.01 on it and only 2.0 or less.

About the copyright issue, I think that if you own the game and do like they did with the scumm motor(I have noidea how it works though) it wouldn't be much problems. The games for scumm runs as soon as you just install them on the psp without modifications to the game itself so its exactly the same game as used on the pc.

I think that the ultimate goal would be to acctually port it. Right now im trying to get x-com for ps1 so I can rip it and emulate it through a ps1emu on the psp :) I don't know how good it will run though.

Thanks for the links, both games looks very interessting and since there are several gba emulators for psp you can buy and rip this game http://rebelstar.namco.com/ then play it on psp instead of the nintendo machine :P

And the one for PPC is Freeware so it shouldn't be any problems with porting it either :)

Anyway update me if you wanna start porting ufo2000 to the psp and I will help in anyway that I can :)

LOL I liked nintendo alot, mega man and super mario is still among my favorite games, but nintendo got stuck somewhere on the road and havent really come up with anything new in "many" years. For example if sega and sony had not showed up we would still be stuck with nintendo 8bit. Somehow there are alot of nintendo fanboys out there that would love just that. I bought the psp because it is such a big step forward in development of portables. LOL your posts are pretty funny but if your serious ur stupid.

Quite serious, quite possibly very stupid. But I have a box of matches, and that is not to be trifled with.

Oh, and anything new? Have you had your head stuck in a hole for the past eight years?

Well, it is time for me to remember that I'm a moderator and declare game consoles flamewars offtopic here <_<

edit: The idea of porting the game to PSP and other mobile devices is interesting. Let's discuss only technicall issues here. But you can create a new topic discussing 'playstation vs nintendo' in 'Patio' :)

My first post...

I started searching for UFO 2000 a bit ago after I had seen and bought Rebelstar (Wife has a Nintendo DS)

It is pretty fun and seems fairly good so far. Unfortinutly it seems to run dog slow. Controls a bit unresponsive and take a second to respond a lot of the time.

I have a GP32 currently and I'm ording the new GP2X which are freely developable (portable) game devices. I would love to see UFO 2000 ported to these and also my Audiovox 5600 (not sure of that number) Windows Mobile phone.

Anyhoo, thanks for contributing and keeping UFO alive :)

been a while since i been on the site, i recently got a PSP and been all about homebrew, running Duke Nukem 3d, quake, doom, snes, more importantly i snagged a copy of X-Com :Ufo Defense for Amiga an ran it on an emulator found here http://psp-news.dcem...uk/pspuae.shtml, runs choppy but it works, be nice to run the dos version, theres a couple of dos emulators for the psp but no mouse support. If there was a source code of X-com released im sure someone would port it to the psp.

Nintendo hasn't had a good idea in years.

The last good idea they had they blew up cause of arrogance, you see ..the PSX was supposed to originally be the answer to the Sega CD. Thats right the PSX was built for the Super Nintendo as a Attachment..look under your super it has a port slot that was never utilized this was to be for a CD slot.

The problem was that Nintendo and Sony were having disagreements as to what to call the new system (and of course MONEY ) as Sony wanted some recognition add to that the fact that Nintendo was talking to Trip Hawkins ( the creater of the 3DO) for the very same project. Sony got word of this and well needless to say they were not too pleased with it.
Eventually all was lost and the 2 separated ways Nintendo in its infinate wisdom thinking that would be the end of it...Not so ..Sony was peeved and decided to release the system on its own to heck with Nintendo..thus the Playstation was born.
Of course this put Nintendo wayy behind Sega who were already well on the way to finishing the Sega Saturn and Sony was just as near to completing the PSX (released in May 95 and Sep 95 respectivly) leaving Nintendo scrambling to make a Next Gen System to keep up and made the Laughable N64 in Dec 96.

Of the three "Next Gen Systems" structurally and power-wise the Saturn won Hands Down with three 32 bit processors and a Very good Lazer Design, Unfortunatly it really lacked in the Software dept and that ended up killing it altogether
Sony had the Worst of the three systems as it was notorious for breaking down ..heck the lazer assembly was designed as to be so easy to replace it did not even need a screwdriver to replace (after the housing was removed duhhh )...But oh the software so much of it and they even took Nintendo's Golden Apple when they signed Squaresoft to produce the Final Fantasy Series for them Exclusivly.
Nintendo? a new Cartidge based system ( no more powerful or as impressive as the Atari Jaguar-a "64"which had already come and gone years beforehand)where the EXACT same game on the PSX was as much as 40 dollars cheaper really says it all.

Nope Nintendo really blew it when they dropped Sony since then they went from being THE system to being the Joke of the Marketplace.

If you loved the Original Nes thats cool even the SNES is cool (but Genesis beat em on Sports) anything after that is Embarrassing to admit :P

I couldn't particularly care about portable X-COM or anything like that. I'd much rather have more, stable PC versions. :P

I am afraid this thread is quite misleading. Ufo2k doesn't really care for the issues of money/conflictions Nintendo or any other game company previously/currently holds. This topic really should be in the 'Patio', so therefore I will move this whole thread.

PSP X-Com (especially if it were an official remake!) would be enough to convince me to buy the little handheld. Who needs a 360 anyway?

Sony's talking about porting old PS1 games into a format that can be loaded onto the memory card of the PSP so you we might eventually get access to the entire PS1 library on PSP, including the X-Com. Not sure how they're going to deal with the lack of extra shoulder buttons though. They might only do it for more popular games though. I don't think X-Com broke any sales records on the PS1.

I suppose that's great news for PS1 fans. Well, who am I kidding - I am a PS1 fan! But Sony has proven it's not so coy about ports or outright emulation, so here's hoping we'll get the whole package.

Sony dragged their feet for too long. People are already loading up their old PS1 games onto their PSPs with hacked firmware. And yes, apparently X-Com works.
