Artifact Site - Level 2 Can You Kill All Aliens?

Can you win the second phase by eliminating all aliens?

I know for a fact you can on the first level, without having to go on to the 'elevator'. Killing all aliens finishes the level and takes you on to the second level.

But I never manage to finish the second level unless I destroy the synomium device and pull back all my troops back to the elevators even though I have apparently killed all aliens on the map and explored every nook and cranny. Is it just not possible to win by eliminating all aliens or am I missing something?

There are two objectives on the second part of the artifact site: kill all the aliens (if possible) and destroy the synomium device (absolutely necessary). You can't just kill all the aliens and win the mission without destroying Mr. Synomium too. On the flip side, if you destroy the device you can then high tail it back to the starting modules and abort the mission without worrying if you got all the aliens. Your score will be lower but at least the mission is complete. ;)

Thanks.

The thing is, I have destroyed the Sinomium device, and killed all the aliens (I think so at least). I have explored the entire map, looked everywhere, but still, the mission doesnt end despite apparently all aliens being dead and the sinomium device being destroyed.

Does it matter some aliens are/may be unconscious? Are there any spots where aliens usually hide which are not accesible by normal means?

If I remember correctly, some aliens may be stuck in the walls. I'm not sure how to describe the area, but I think it's above the boiler room hall. Or perhaps not, but it's the level 1 area with black walls that's not the synonium device chamber.

They may have done this on purpose to force you to leave rather than do the classic wipe-out-all-aliens-to-get-all-the-loot scenario we're generally used to, to make it frustrating for the players.

Ah, right! Aliens get stuck in the walls for some reason. I remember helping someone track down an alien one time and found it jammed in the dirt between two walls. Sounds like a potential bug. I don't know if the alien starts there or if it moves into the dirt later on, but it should be fixable. ;)

Has anyone seen this happen in a EU base? I never saw an alien in a wall, but have got my flying suited guys into the dirt in some areas. Haven't been able to fix this issue yet, and this may tie in to TFTD as well. :(

You can kill all the aliens without destroying the synomium device. Same goes for those colony mission.

Most common problem for me when trying to find the last alien in an artefact site, was the hallucinoid hiding under the elevator in the central room (the elevator that leads up two floors to the room with the synomium device).

I've only ever beaten the second phase by killing all aliens. I can't seem to destroy the syno. device, I've tried everything (blowing nearly every bit of the whole base up too!) but it never works. (can't remember if I had the same problem with alien colonies etc). I've never read of this problem anywhere else though, is it just me? (I've the powerplus version of TFTD on CD. And I assume the device is the two black rectangles in the tower with the tentaculats, and once they explode they should be 'gone' but I still lose -750 even then). So I have the exact opposite problem :D

for that reason I hate the 'alien in wall' bug (I assume it's a bug) coz then I can't finish the mission :( so it does more than 'frustrate' me, it makes me mad! (waste of 30mins + trying to find the damn thing) (you can tell it's 'in the wall' or a chamber offscreen because it sometimes panics and you see its silohette off the map). Otherwise, the mission ends automatically when I've killed everything, like any normal mission

if the lift hallucinoid blocks the lift doesn't want to come out and play, you can destroy the pipe around the steps, stand where the steps join the tower and shoot through into the bottom storey (or throw a grenade ;))

The synomium device is actually one more floor above those 2 black rectangles. When you go up, it's just straight ahead. The room with the two black rectangles seem to be the tentaculuts' office or something :)

Yep, the synonium device is that little pedestal thingy with two spinning rings on it. Blow that up and the artefact site is cleared - whether you win or lose from this point.

It's one of the most dangerous parts of the mission, but I've come to quite enjoy the assault on the black room with the tentaculats. Mostly because you know where they are, but think of some way to get them down.

I often tackle that area by having aquanauts creep towards the entrances from two different directions at the same time, with each side covering the upper level of the opposite end. Coelacanths are great sacrificial units to send in to lure out some tentaculats. Just be mindful of the aquatoids that sometimes get stationed in the upper cubbyholes.

LOL, all this time and I never knew there was a floor above the 'tentaculat office' :D (can't remember when I bought TFTD, 1999? or earlier)

internet advice comes through again :D thankyou!

I agree that part of the mission is fun, there's a 'build up' carefully preparing soldiers to go in, then when ready sending a tank or sacrificial lame soldier to draw out the floating brains, and systematically wiping them out.

that is, it's fun unless they break out and zombify your men before they're ready :P
