Problem Running The Game

WOW, I thought this game was long gone. It's one of my favorite games of all time, but I haven't been able to get it working for the last several years. I've been looking for a CD-ROM version for some time, thinking that I'd have better success, but it's incredibly difficult to find copies of this game in stores, as I'm sure you can imagine. So you can picture my shock when I did, in fact, come across several old copies of UFO Enemy Unknown. Picking it up, I felt as though I had just found some sort of holy relic.

I took my fresh '98 copy back to my comp as soon as I could and installed it...but still it refused to work. Then I found UFO2000, downloaded the most recent stable file and copied the X-COM files just as the instructions said, but still no joy. Here's what it says when I try to run the game:

./init-scripts/main.lua:47: CheckDataFiles: can't open file 'C:/Program Files/UFO2000/XCOMDEMO/ufograph/man_1f1.spk' -and then it tells me to make sure I copied the original X-COM data files to the proper folder, which I have. (also, I do have the full version, not the demo)

Can anyone please help me install this gem of a game, once and for all on Windows XP??

Thanks!

Steve

make sure you dont have duplicate subfolders. Somthing like ufo2000/xcomdemo/xcom/xcom files here. if you do, just drag all the Xcom files inside its dir directly into the one inside ufo2k so it looks like: ufo2000/xcom/xcom files here

if it aint, i have no idea

=b Thanks, guys - UFO2000 now works. However, I do have a couple more questions:

I receive this error message when I try running the original XCOM game:

16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem

C:\program~1\Ufo\INTRO.EXE

The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.

CS:0000 IP:0075 OP:f0 00 f0 37 05 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

Close Ignore

What do you make of this, and is there a way of running the original XCOM game on XP? If so, how? XCOM2000 works, which leads me to believe that XCOM proper should also work.

UFO2000 and X-COM:UFO are completely independent from one another. UFO2000 only needs some files from X-COM:UFO and those are not related to the engine of the original game.

If you have the DOS version of X-COM:UFO I'd suggest you to get DosBox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net) since it runs smoothly using it. If you have the Windows CE version seek instructions on how to run the game on the forums concerning X-COM:UFO.
