New Versions Of Xcom 1 On The Way...

One Man Band

Recommended Posts

Hello folks...

I wanted to let everyone know that I'm working on both a (real) Windows version and a GBA version of XCOM 1.

The GBA version is a lot farther along than the Windows version (the GBA version is _much_ easier to do than the Windows version), but I'm bringing the Windows version up to speed now.

The reason I call the Windows version 'real' is because it will be purely event driven, instead of the linear way DOS expects. (That's why the GBA version is easier to develop than the Windows version; I just 'emulate' DOS on the GBA. Still, having said that, there's still a lot of screen reformatting to do for the GBA because the screen is so much smaller than DOS.)

I will post screenshots of each as soon as I figure out how to add an image to these messages. :huh?:

Or are you doing this in your own time? and will be have to have special equipment to transfer the rom to a cartridge for the gba? You should be able to upload pics with no trouble. It's an option down below the post text. Click the "Browse..." button and select the image, then make the post.

That was my question too. Just to know how to get a copy from each version. From a shop or internet or is it free? How much does it cost if it isn't..? Edited by Nyyperoid

I want to know when the GBA version is getting released (and I can buy it.)
I hope it is ready by february vacation; That way, I can play Xcom on the plane! :)
Edit: Don't worry about the pic sizes. The 56kers will just have to suffer, unfourtnately for them. Edited by Cpl. Facehugger

Well, it's my intent to approach the license holder (Atari, if I'm not mistaken) to see if they'd be interested in publishing it/them. (I have no idea if they would be or not.) I like to think that the GBA version has a shot because I would be able to fit it on a 4MB cartridge, lowering their cost-of-goods. It'll need a hefty save game device (256K flash), which will add to the cost, but it's still cheaper than an 8MB cart with a save game device.

I am doing them as a pet project, so I'm not on any rigid schedule. However, if they are interested in pursuing it, then I would up their priority.
Well, I certainly hope they are intrested in persueing the GBA version. I mean, xcom on the GBA, while I'm waiting for a bus! It'd be perfect.
Yeah, I would have thought a 'Portable XCOM' would be a slam dunk.
With the original music and death screams I hope?
The same sound effects, yes, but the Playstation music. Those with sharp eyes might already have spotted the Playstation Geoscape.

I plan to create a 'hybrid' XCOM: the core will be the PC version, but with Playstation additions (like the uniform UFOpedia with craft animations, and so on.)

Come on, DS, it won't cost that much. No need to mooch off the nice man, the nice man who may be giving the world the gift of portable Xcom!!

As long as I have my original death screams in the windows version, im happy. Not those little moans like CE has. :(

Will you use the sounds from the original dos version or from the Collectors Edition? All of us in this forum really hopes you would use the original dos versions sounds.

Hello again...
How much progress have you made so far on the gba version?
Not as much as the Windows version I'm afraid. _Every_ screen needs to be reformatted for the smaller screen, so it's a real pain in the neck.
Will the windows version be free? Or will we have to pay for it? (For the third time for some of us...) :)
I have no idea. That would be up to the publisher to decide (if they would even want to release it in the first place.)

I've attached another Windows shot for you. This time it's the new UFOpedia, specifically the Skyranger. (It's animated like the PSX version.)

That's great man! Thanks! One more thing though, will it have all the PSX version videos?

How's the progress going? Are those static screen shots or are they coded to have some actions already? When do you plan to get that windows version working?

The screen shots I have posted where while it was actually running in the game(s), so it's real code running, not mockups or anything else.

Just wondering if you've gotten infogrames permission to do this since Xenocide didn't?

But, Presumeably, they wouldn't say no, right? I mean, this guy comes to them with, essientially an already developed game (don't have to pay programmers 100$ a day!) which they can put on the market for no more than it costs to produce GBA cartridges. It is a win-win for infrogrames. (Or hasborg, or whoever owns the xcom liscence now)

I wouldn't count on it Cpl. Facehugger, they didn't even bother to reply about Xenocide. In general companies that have aquired the rights to some old games don't give a damn about them and have zero interest in re-issuing them in any way. It would be a shame though if you'd have to make all that work for nothing One Man Band. Well, at least you could play them yourself :D Edited by Whitewashed
