Run Apoc On Win2k/XP With Vmware (Emulation)

Recommended Posts

VMWare can give you a virtual machine on which you install whatever OS you want. On Win2K, I installed MS-DOS 6.22 on one virtual machine and ran Apoc smoothly. Here are my steps to get it up and running.

1. Get VMWare from www.vmware.com and install it on Win2K.
2. Run VMWare and create a virtual machine named DOS.
3. On that virtual machine, install DOS 6.22. I happen to have a copy of this antique on one CD and a bootable Win98 CD, so this step was kinda difficult for me. I hope you can do it less painfully.
a) Boot with Win98 CD and get CD drive support in command prompt.
B) Run setup in DOS 6.22 to create a bootable floppy.
c) Copy config.sys, autoexec.bat, CD driver and MSCDEX.EX to the floppy from the RAM drive created by Win98 CD.
d) Boot with the floppy; fdisk drive C; reboot; format drive C; sys drive C.
e) Copy config.sys, autoexec.bat, CD driver and MSCDEX.exe to drive C; setup CDROM support.
f) Reboot from hard disk. Install entire DOS 6.22.
g) Install Apoc from CD.
4. Add
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1
LH c:\dos\mouse.com
in autoexec.bat and
sound.virtualDev = "sb16"
in the configure file of the virtual machine, i.e. My Documents\My Virtual Machines\DOS\DOS.vmx.
5. Power off the virtual machine and power on it to load new settings. (Reset didn't work for me.)
6. Run setup in Apoc directory and get sound work.
7. Run xcomapoc.exe and enjoy burning aliens. :-)

Actually, it shouldn't matter what OS you have now. As long as VMWare can run on you machine and you can setup DOS, you will be able to get Apoc running. I tried Win98, but it didn't work with Apoc. Maybe somebody can try Win95 and let us know. Edited by macroxue

Sounds complicated, but maybe it will help some people who seem completely unable to get it running even with all the FAQ stuff we have already. Thanks for the detailed instructions.

This method should also allow you to use the DOS versions of the games out there as well, but isn't VMware like $249? Haven't checked recently, but I don't remember it being free.

Ok, I tried with win98, and as you said, it won't go. I get sound, intro, but when I go into menu, there is no picture (everythink is black), but i hear music, and I heard "click" if I blindly click with mouse on new game (or something, because I don't see it <_< ).

When i'll have more time, i'll try and get it to work, hopefully. Or else --> good old DOS :D . Edited by karafeka
According to their site, you can download it and try it for 30 days for free. Usual story.

EDIT: $299 for the full version. :o
Hmm, I recon I could get a *cough* discount :LOL:

Thanks Imensly for the help with sound in VMWare guys. I live for old dos games. now I can get Crusader working also. Those instrustions you have up there work like a freakin charm.

P.S. You can get VMWare to work for longer. Goto astalavista.box.sk and search. It's well worth the price though.

I tried already memmaker but it says: "EMS not available"

Any help.... ,please.

just want to say that vmware worked for me after all the other methods has failed.

even though i got apocalypse to work using the other methods listed in this forum, i was a victim of the 20sec hang (whereby the game hangs within 20secs of starting) when i used those methods.
vmware works perfectly.

i acquired a copy of vmware via "sources"
and an old copy of dos 6.22 via "other sources"

one thing to note is that my modified version of dos 6.22 automatically came with some mouse driver called "cute mouse" or something. this was terrible for the game. the mouse pointer started wandering all over by itself. i had to find and reinstall the old mouse drivers provided by microsoft to get the mouse working properly. (using google)

my only complain about playing the game in vmware is having to play in a window. when i switch vmware to full screen mode, the colours go all retro and you can't see anything. but that is a small price to pay when i can play with sound and movies working. if someone could post a solution to the problem i listed, i'ld have a perfect game

Can you tell me where you got VMWare? I tried using DOS box, but my computer really sucks. It runs too slowly.

Verified up through intro movie and main menu. I noticed static in the sound on my Audigy 2 ZS emulated as SB16 with above settings. May be related to CD access as the static seemed to start and stop when DOS/VMware accessed the CD-ROM drive.

Will Edit with updates....

CD fix did not fix the sound issue. Wasn't very hopefull. So far the game runs fairly smooth though. No crashing yet. Edited by Lokaen

VMware runs most old games in dos mode. But i have a problem with it that i can not solve myself. The default video drivers in VMware as far as im aware do not include VESA support. Wich most games past 1993 use (late DOS game period) and that means the color palette, or the graphics in general, will look colorless and grainy. The VMware tools wich contains SVGA stuff dont work for dos.

Compare a session in XP and a session in VMware and you will see what i mean. Not to mention the bad quality of the SB16 legacy emulation. As VMware emulates a SB PCI 128 wich was among the last cards with rela dos support but in DOS mode you can not install the VMware tools so you are forced to use that INI file workaround wich gives you bad quality sound with static.

Anyone know if theres any VESA drivers for dos you can use to get past the picture quality thing? The sound i doubt you can do anytign about untill VMware tools start working for DOS, if ever.

But atelast it work with MUSIC. Something i can not mange in windows XP. Just sound there from an original disk.

EDIT:

Tried VMware in win 95mode now. The Vmware tools install fine for tehre. Sound and music seems to work fine in Apocalypse. but theres no picture whatsoever. Just a black screen and you hear you can click stuff in the backgrund.

Anyone try their luck at this? could be teh silver bullet.

Just to let you all know, just in case you didn't know. VMWare Server 1.0.0 if completly free and is fully featured. Plus, you can slap it on a sever, and just use the free player from your machine if you such a setup. It works great here!

Guys,

I'm having a really hard time getting DOS 6.22 to install in VMWare.

I have the VMWare Workshop 5.1 and I've managed to find DOS 6.22 on the internet.

It is split up into 3 seperate Boot Disks, but whenever I try to boot with them, they don't boot, they just give a non-system disk error.

I've tried everything I can think of, and I really want to get DOS working on here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx

When the VM is booting up hit f2. Use the arrow keys in the cmos menu to go to boot. There highlight your harddrive and put it below your cd drive in the list and exit saving changes. If you have your dos 6.22 cd or image loaded select it for the drive letter to boot from under settings before hand. Now restart you should now be booted to your bootable dos cd or cd image.

For those of you with sound issues specifically no sound in vmware:

This article is a recap of the no sound issues in DOS:

http://communities.vmware.com/message/698078

Thise are the lines I added to my VMware config file pulled from above article:

sound.present = "TRUE"

Sound.VirtualDev = "sb16"

sound.baseAddr = "0x220"

sound.dma16 = "7"

sound.dma8 ="1"

sound.irq = "5"

sound.mpu401baseAddr = "0x330"

sound.Opl3BaseAddr = "0x388"

For just the SB16 driver for dos:

http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/

select soundblaster > others > sound blaster16 > next

click search archives now > select dos > select drivers > click go > select option 2 and click download now >

Click agree and the download will start
