Please ask before posting somone elses work (modified as it is), i wouldnt have had a problem with it but many people have worked on the original ufo2k weaponset. Overall the new graphics arent bad. I like the M9

Credit where Credit is due please and thank you

It is good! Though, some weapons are way too accurate compared to some others: Phyton with scope and laser, Accuracy with aimed is 160%

When you compare it to XSR sniper rifle, which has accuracy of 120%

...Okay, Usually pistols aren't more accurate than sniper rifles...

And also i think that that plutonium pack is little too much, 1000 damage? 30 blast range? Good thing is that it costs so much...

But as overall, it is good weapons set!

Is the UFO2000 weapon set not released under Gnu General Public License version 2? If so, there should probably be something in there to explain its license and how it differs from the licensing of the rest of the UFO2000 distribution.

If, on the other hand, it is GPL'd, (I don't see any reason why it shouldn't be, especially if it's supposed to be the "official" weapon set of UFO2000) then there should be no problem with anyone distributing derivative works of it, as long as they credit the original authors and include a copy of the GPL. As far as my understanding goes, there would be no need for explicit consent from the original authors as the consent is supposedly given in the GPL.

ive no idea what the licensing talks about with this sort of thing but i'd still rather have consent. Can somone elaborate on what the licensing of UFO2000 would mean for stuff like this? Edited by Sporb

  1. You may copy and distribute verbatim copies of the Program's

source code as you receive it, in any medium, provided that you

conspicuously and appropriately publish on each copy an appropriate

copyright notice and disclaimer of warranty; keep intact all the

notices that refer to this License and to the absence of any warranty;

and give any other recipients of the Program a copy of this License

along with the Program.

You may charge a fee for the physical act of transferring a copy, and

you may at your option offer warranty protection in exchange for a fee.

  2. You may modify your copy or copies of the Program or any portion

of it, thus forming a work based on the Program, and copy and

distribute such modifications or work under the terms of Section 1

above, provided that you also meet all of these conditions:

a) You must cause the modified files to carry prominent notices

stating that you changed the files and the date of any change.

    B) You must cause any work that you distribute or publish, that in

whole or in part contains or is derived from the Program or any

part thereof, to be licensed as a whole at no charge to all third

parties under the terms of this License.

    c) If the modified program normally reads commands interactively

when run, you must cause it, when started running for such

interactive use in the most ordinary way, to print or display an

announcement including an appropriate copyright notice and a

notice that there is no warranty (or else, saying that you provide

a warranty) and that users may redistribute the program under

these conditions, and telling the user how to view a copy of this

License.  (Exception: if the Program itself is interactive but

does not normally print such an announcement, your work based on

the Program is not required to print an announcement.)

Since the UFO2000 weapon set is included in the main UFO2000 distribution and does not appear to contain any license notices of its own (in addition to the Credits.doc file, which just lists the authors), people will assume that the license of the main UFO2000 distribution extends to the said weapon set. (and they are probably right in assuming that) According to my interpretation of the mumbo-jumbo above, it means, when applied to the u2k weapons set, that by consenting to release their work under GPL, its authors have already given consent for people to make and distribute modified copies of it, as long as the original authors are credited and the license stays the same.

For information on our current liscence :

http://www.xcomufo.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=7852

For short : you can use or modify existing work, but then you MUST credit the authors.

Also, this liscence is independant from copyright issues, which exist.

How graphic artists proceed, in a general manner is by giving ufo2000 the right to use and do whatever with their work. However, this right stops once you take the work away from ufo2000.

For example, I could take ufo2000 and make Potato3000 with it. Checking with the authors is only ethics at this stage, but one MUST provide everyone credit.

Now let's say I take the weapon images and use them in another game, RPG-maker for instance. That is a "violation" of copyright and you have to check with the authors.

Modifying ufo2000 as a whole and redistributing (with correct credit) is ok. =b

Taking parts of ufo2000 and putting them elsewhere (even with credit) is not ok. =p

As for your weaponset, since this is still part of ufo2000, all you would have to do is credit the original authors.

But nothing forbids you from taking one more step and asking kindly. ^_^

As long as you distribute the Sourcecode under the same License also, yes.

Wrong, you can take any part of ufo2000 and integrate it into any other game or whatever, as long as that game uses the same licence and you give credit.

Well as long as we are talking about GPL anyway.

Also, you can take ufo2000 and do whatever you want with it as long as you do not redistribute whatever you make with it.

But, taking parts of ufo2000 and integrating it in another program that is not under GPL, open source or not, would not be OK. That is why it is sometimes called a viral licence, anything "infected" with it has to become GPL too. But anyway there is no obligation to use stuff under GPL licence, so....

What prevents, say, a company from taking for example the UFO2000 code and using it without giving credit and without using the licence? All they'd have to do is grab the code, modify it, and compile, as long as no one sees the source code, they'd be safe, wouldn't they?

Actually, they are allowed to do that.

The GPL allows them to get the code and modify it, without having to tell anyone about it.

But what they are not allowed to do is redistribute what they made with the code, like sell it or give it away for free, unless they fulfill the conditions of the licence.

And you are always safe if you break the rules unless someone finds out you did...

If the copyright holder finds out, he can drag them to court for copyright violations.

Actually, there are a few means to check this, analysis of the exe could provide enough info to get this to court and call for an examination of the company's code.

@ Oldtype : true, thanks for the precisions.

Now i know this may be a bit bold for my first post, but anonymous!! KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF OTHER PEOPLE MATERIAL YOU TALENTLESS PIRATE!!!!

okay, thats isnt nice, and i dont mean to hurt anyones feelings here, but people get REALLY aggrovated when their material is BLATENTLY taken, chopped up and reassembled, often badly.

This has happened to me before so i am rather ANTI on the subject

2Anonymous: All the file path references in *.lua file should be exactly in the same case as on disk. The game just can't find the file if it has wrong name.

2Platium_Panda: Making derived work is ok, that's why we all have electricity and computers now. Otherwise we would still all live in caves :) By the way, GPL license we are using (at least for code, that is certain) encourages creation of derived work and has proven to be efficient, as now we have lots of free software available. So I don't see any problems if Anonymous takes some existing weapon set and modifies it as he likes. He should only credit original authors, explain where to take original work and clearly indicate that this weapon set is modified. If this weapon set is worse than the original, nobody would use it. If it contains some useful improvements, hey, that's what is called a progress :)

does the liscence mean that anyone can come along, recolour or rearrange my hard work and claim it as their own?

Exept for the claim as their own part, yes. And he does not actually make that claim.

Seems like he did not update the Credits.doc file in the weapon set, meaning his own name is not in there.

Bad choice using .doc BTW.

I would replace that credits file with something along these lines:

This weaponset is a modified version of the "weponset name" by "names"

See the changelog for details on what was changed

Just be sure that the weaponset names are not the same, to avoid any confusion.

"OK, I made this weapons set and I feel, everyone must got it."

in my book, that comment is as good as an "i made this stuff", although no specific mention of graphics is made i agree.

Whats wrong with a .Doc file?

Whats wrong with a .Doc file?

It looks funky in a text editor. I run Linux and wordpad is not part of the package. OK, I can read them in OpenOffice, but I hardly ever use that. Plain text files are a better choice when formating is not important.

id changed the weapons names and im workin in new graphics, so dont lose your mind

pd: the readme file says:

Here I've used graphics that Plasma, Sporb, Hobbes, Natchwolf, Dark Mankey and Kratos made.

I just modified this files to make this weapon set

I promise that, I will make my own graphics later, but for the moment

I can't make any decent file by my own due to problems with my software

So I hope you don't piss off

+ I like the weapons that are unavailbule elsewhere, like revolver, decoy, minigun. No weapons are overwhelmingly powerful, and I like the multuple rifle choices. The graphics you made are great!

-the custom weapons should either be added to the main set, or have other choices on the page, the backpack was mystifying (mabe I'm stupid), some weapons always end up in the trash1 set. There is also the compadibility issues with new versions.

Yeah you right, im alredy done another page for the set but i think its too ugly, i most fix it, do you think i most to put the backpack again, and the reson of the custom weapon set is why I make more custom weapons and upgrade the weapons that alredy exist in there

Sorry, i didnt post anything because i get problems with my computer

Look at the AddEquipment groups at the end of the file. Comment the weapon names out (with a -, IIRC) one by one and test the set to see if the problem gets fixed. I assume that you have this problem too?
