SupSuper
This is an idea based on one of EDF's plans. EDF Project FAQ Q) What! If the map is as big as you say, how can I ever find all the aliens and win the mission? I mean, the colony missions in TFTD were bad, but that ... that would be just plain evil! A) Well, you can initiate recovery at any time. It's not like XCOM where you had to neutralize all of the aliens before you could end the mission. In fact, neutralizing all of the aliens won't end the mission! You decide when you think there're no more aliens. You press a button to tell your soldiers to initiate recovery ... and if there were still aliens close by, they may well attack and you'll get pulled back into combat. Otherwise, you'll just get warped right to the mission debriefing screen. Neat, eh? Basically, we should have a Recovery button that we can press when we're fed up of looking for that blasted last alien. The mission should still end when all aliens are dead. But when you couldn't find the last one, you just push the Recovery button and your soldiers will eventually run into the last alien Of course you wouldn't use this all the time to find aliens because, if there's still many aliens on the battlefield, you'll easily find your soldiers running into dangerous situations for you to handle. After all, the Recovery option wouldn't be smart enough for you to easily "cheat" with it
GARAK
I don't see the need. If the ai is good enough, there won't be a "last alien syndrome" right? The aliens are trying to kill the xcom agents. They are clones, and seem to me like they are fighting for the bigger cause not for themselves. I don't think they would hide, but would work together to try and eliminate the agents. In the original you would have some aliens wandering around inside buildings and fields, and it would take a while to find them, but that doesn't have to be the case. Also, I propose miniature flying scout drones that are fast, small and weaponless. They would speed up the exploration process greatly, once researced, for little additional cost. Snakeman
The drone thing I think would be a nice late game reconnaissance boon, post flying suit tech, perhaps when your researching minaturization tech sub branches. Another alternative for hitting this recovery button when you just want to end the mission, perhaps just before confirming, it could ask you if you want to leave or lift the fog of war and end it with combat at the sacrafice of overall score for the mission? I figure, if funding is directly tied to mission scores anyway, its probably a fair trade off to having this recovery/lift fog of war thing. Although I would suppose in this context, "fog of war" simply means, no matter what direction you face any of your units, the alien(s) left on the map will be on in terms of line of sight and their locations revealed on the mini and tactical map. Not a bad idea too when you consider folks as determined as Zombie and NKF to research various aspects to this kind of game, it can help out experiments.
