  1. Nice. Good to see some updates come around, even if they're small ones.
  2. http://sopastrike.com/ This SOPA thing is a real threat to UFO2000, especially considering the possibility to use the original X-COM data files. We avoid including any proprietary copyrighted stuff with the game and leave it up to the user to find the original copy of X-COM if he wants to (and there are legal ways to obtain it). But the problem with SOPA/PIPA is that it would give too much power to those guys and they might be trigger happy to shut us down on a mere suspicion or misunderstanding. Sorry for not providing a prior notice about participating in this strike. Maybe it was crazy, but somehow it seemed to me that such unexpected shutdown would feel like a bit more real demonstration of what can be expected in the future if such acts pass. My only suggestion would be to make a more clear, formal message why they cannot connect. It's not uncommon for UFO2K to be down (at least from my former experiences). I'm glad you participated though! Now we have ACTA and future other bills to worry about (OPEN?).
  3. Wow, no I never heard of them! Interesting I followed you on Deviantart. Not many people I know there. . Nice to see a fellow retro pixel artist.
  4. With the risk of sounding corny... On the subject of thanking people (though off topic), I actually want to thank you Serge, for developing UFO2K. When I came here in 2005, I was a complete newbie that wanted to program in C++...I was 15 (21 now). I'm actually amazed you didn't end up getting frustrated with this fact, as I hardly did anything worthwhile for UFO2K. Your development force really inspired me and is what brought me here in the first place. I think if I didn't stumble upon UFO2K, I would have actually not been interested in game development as much as I am today, and progressed. I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life, and I can't help but feel the community here drove me to where I am today. I met a lot of really cool people here, and very resourceful ones at that! I still don't fully understand C++ (mostly the advanced related topics such as pointers, references, which I actually researched and understood on the concept level finally a year ago), but I have over the years grown to understand programming in general a lot better. I've toyed with various ones so far, such as C++, PHP, Javascript, Python, HTML5 (though I think Javascript is the real language for this, especially for the canvas element...but if you want to start calling mark ups real languages...), and some odd network game engine I found called BYOND (Dream Maker is referred to as the language). I even taken up pixel art, (which honestly, I started from crappy UFO2K add-on art), drawing in general, vector art, and some general graphic and web design art (ooh shiny buttons!). I think this was my most significant growth and influence from UFO2K, since my first real work was from a Syndicate weapon set mod for it. UFO2K led me to Fallen (a space browser game spin off from Pardus's [pardus.at]) Fallen led me to learning Blender (3D modelling) and PHP somewhat. Fallen's demise led me to find BYOND game engine. Which led to a lot of goofing off (I don't even bother playing games these days) playing retro multiplayer online fan games...but it did lead me to pixel art further. I went from one indie game to another, yet I learned a lot from my newbie mistakes and grew from them. I don't think projects and their demise entails only the demise itself, but a learning experience to why they died. Which is why I'm glad to see UFO2K's forums still there for some history.
  5. Wow, as I soon as I saw the name KafrOS, I decided to check here. Nice to see you again, Kafros! What have you been up to my old Greek friend? Did you just register for a blog? I can't seem to find yours if you did. I wouldn't mind following you as an old friend. Can't get enough of retro graphics. I figured, the day I waited for it to come back, I'd be dead probably, as companies don't really go this route any more.
  6. It's been a long time since I posted on these boards, and strategycore. I haven't necessarily vanished from the web, just am elsewhere for specific interests. If you're wondering where you can find me in a more active manner, you can check out / follow my new blog page (game development blog): http://keizgon.blogspot.com/ I know this appears a little spammy, but hey, I known you awesome fellas for awhile, I think you'll not kill me for it.
  7. I believe it had to do with the game server, not the project forums. ufo2000.xcomufo That is interesting...I'm actually amazed how nobody uses the forums anymore? I know I don't, but I guess it's because I'm doing other related tasks?
  8. I currently don't have a running project at this time. However, I've been experimenting with PHP/Javascript and am curious if you guys can handle a small MySQL server for a web based game? I believe you played Pardus, so relate to that but on a much smaller scale. I'm a programmer/graphics designer/game designer in practice. I'm simply seeking some web hosting since my budget is quite tight. And since you guys don't seem to be that alive either, it probably wouldn't hurt it for a small project like mine. If it became bigger, I could always figure a way out of branching onto something of my own (or possibly paying you guys a small fee). I just rather not risk it, since I'm just experimenting. It's more of an inquiry of the idea. ---- Also, it would be nice to be in contact via IM if you're interested. I can't tell if these forums are going to collapse on itself due to little activity and what not. I just got a message a couple days ago from Mindstormaster that Ufo2k server space might be cleared if no activity is there (which is understandable). I also read Xenocide is suffering from the same fate. And since these forums are most active from these projects, it would be kind of an easy conclusion that it could end up being cleared as well for space. If I'm wrong (which I am probably), feel free to correct me. I'm just curious what's going on here. It would be nice to keep the site up in general, even if it was through different/newer project blood.
  9. Who's actually in charge of the server, such as who's paying for it, who knows the details.. Someone I can contact for possibly hooking up to talk about maybe giving me a little free space for a website or project forum? Micah? Mindstormaster? These are the only two I believe have direct contact of the server. Please correct me if I'm wrong? If it isn't possible for me to get free space on your server, could you tell me how you encountered getting these forums (these I don't believe are free) and how much the server costs and your willingness to keep it alive? I never owned my own webspace before, and I would like to explore this area. ------ I just read, xenocide is dead too? Wow. I want to say I wonder how this happened, but honestly game developing is no easy feat.
  10. What's your player name? It would be nice to rally a bunch of older players again, even if the admins were ill mannered persons and the community seemingly becoming full of adolescents (was it always like this?). The only way I'll play is if there is actual people to play with that I know of, that's what was fun about the game. And since it limited you to only play so much a day, it really worked with anyone's schedule. So how about it, Azrael. Want to play again? Or should we start back up on Fallen? At this point it almost feels like just starting fresh would be the best though. Pardus wasn't as fun being so over populated with children as it is today. And now that we can actually flex some PHP/Javascript/CSS muscles, I think we could actually pull it off this time. I have the art covered completely, even if it is pixel/vector art. Let's just not name it Fallen. I did some research and I have yet to find another browser game similar to what Pardus actually achieved honestly. I think it would be nice to branch off this MMO concept. It's not really that costly on a server compared to an actual real time MMORPG. Who knows, it could become profitable. If you don't though, I am heavily considering it. It's probably one of the easiest games to make compared to many complicated ones out there. It's just a point and click game. ------- wow this place seems really dead. Maybe I should start rounding up IM accounts for people that I use to know of important interest...
  11. Trying to see where everyone is and what has happened. I'm targeting this post towards any and all previous/current developers. If it takes you a year to see this post and respond and you use to make any to little contributions, then still please respond. This isn't a roast or lynch, just a state of the game address. Maybe if we find out why people are leaving, we can resolve these issues. Perhaps we need more communication in grouping every once in awhile even when nothing is getting done. We all have lives so it's understandable, and we do this for free. I know this may be a bit intrusive (or even silly) to you, but feedback is better than no feedback. Please check in and reply for the following: - Your role (programmer, artist, composer, web designer, etc.) - Active/In-Active - Last feature you developed (it's ok if you don't remember, just guess) - Plans for Ufo2k? - Lost motivation due to other (lack of) developers? - Just lurking/waiting? - A more promising project than Ufo2k drew you in? (This is completely legit and no one will hang you for it) - Any additional information to why you became inactive/active again? ---------------------------- I guess I'll start off - Graphic Artist (though I have yet to contribute anything here as this role) / Amateur Programmer (nothing really that useful) - In-Active - Probably chrysalids (sp?) as units. 2-3 years ago? - Yes. My plans are moving towards the thought of starting an actual story and graphical foundation as if we were making our own X-COM UFO. I'm not interested in swaying from the original style and 2D graphics for the battlescape. - I feel I may have chain effected Serge on this. I don't exactly pop in enough to do anything worthwhile. - Neither. Losing track of time and honestly forgetting about this project time after time. - I'm developing my own retro game that has nothing to do with X-COM. I didn't mean to "leave" Ufo2k for it necessarily, just it's hard to find time for more than one. - Like I said, with my current project, I'm always losing track. I also am attending college full time. I'm not going to claim I'm active currently though. I honestly don't know at this point.
  12. When I first read this I thought you meant use X-com and TFTD's weapon sets (which you can if you have the games installed and linked with ufo2k). I'm not exactly sure what you are saying then. Use x-com/tftd weapon balances with them? Or replace ufo2k's current default with them? Any who, the Plasma knife and the graphics all being under the same author, Sporb, I don't think this should matter too significantly. Thanks for the feedback.
  13. I gave the pistol a bigger grip and the shotgun a bigger barrel size, and readjusted it overall. http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/5092/equipment2.png

    Logo again

How about the artists? I know constantly changing how UFO2K looks is a big hassle and change, Serge, but I honestly think what he's doing here is good. Also, I would like to mention that "head" that looks like an alien/creature is indeed unique and should be kept, HOWEVER, he COULD still apply it to his logo as well. How about it Meodai? Try applying that part to your logo to see if it works? Even if he disappeared after contributing all this, other artists can still pick up where he left off. I know you feel insecure about this, but believe it or not art style isn't hard to copy. I prefer the darker logo, it's more readable and eerie. I hope you change the menus, GUI, stat panels, etc. to something like this. While Nachtwolf did a good job on most of the custom GUI, I still feel it needs a bit more. I personally don't like plain white designs like in the game. It could always be improved. We can also make this a interchangeable feature in the game (switching themes) if someone wants to create such an extension. Good work on the animations. I don't know if it's supported, but I think it would be interesting to have some form of artsy looks.
