Possible V1+ Funding Extension

Recommended Posts

was going to add this to the end of the funding thread in the workshops but since its an addition that will require more more thought I should put it here:

When we have decided on our finding areas (i.e. who is listed on the funding pages) I thought maybe rather than having to operate within a funding country's borders to gain results, instead to have a grid across the whole globe and then weight each grid "square" (since to get them equal sized they might not be squares) depending on how close they are to resective countries. The closer to the country (or major cities of the country?) the more kudos recived for successful missions. This would be particulalry suitable for determining the rate of respect gained for missions over the sea and over large empy land masses in the middle of continents.

Also it would encourage base building near major cities, which would provide extra tactical challenges, since quite a lot of major cities are near the coast.

Just a thought

Great idea, MagicAndy!

Further thoughts:

With such a grid we could not only reward the player for operating near a

specific region, but also punish him for specializing in this region.

For every mission in a "square" you gain lots of positive karma in countries

near this square and additionally a bit of negative karma in distant countries.

So the more you work in the USA while ignoring Asia, the faster India

will become jealous.

Or we could use political relationship instead of distance: So France will

reward you for protecting their overseas colonies. The US will reward you

for missions in Israel. India will not reward you for missions in Pakistan.

And so on...

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me... IMO there should be global bonus for larger battles, meaning that destroying bases or battleships effects all countries (News do spread). Main weight would of course be in local events. It seems kind of stupid that italy signs a pact when i have been kicking alien arse all over the globe but missed a few flyovers there.

D'oh... That seems quite the same you wrote, sorry Andy...

the weighting in the grid could probably be proportional rather than absolute, since this would allow larger confrontations to cover larger areas in the same spreading out way.

Somthing like:

If the distance of the square from the action = X

Kudos gained in square = TotalKudos(X)

This funtion of B could then be shaped to allow dramatic falloff of kudos after the initial square, an even distribution or whatever.

Simple Exponential Example: Kudos gain in square = TotalKudos - X^2

X = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

X = 0, 1 , 4 , 9, 16 ,25 etc.

So bringing down a small craft which provided a kudos level of 5, would be felt in three squares distance.

Destroying a base for 30 Kudos points would then be felt in 6.

Kudos gained in each square would then be distributed in the same proportion that countries occupied of the square.

Make the suares quite small and suddenly you have wieghted distribution system. The player can operate in the center of a funding zone and make large gains at the expense of all other countries. Or can play along the borders of two for lesser gains in both.

That is a very nice idea. It makes the game much more realistic and forces you to think about where you intercept the ufo's more

Yeah, this makes much more sense. I mean, think of it in terrorism terms: England is going to be much more freaked if there's an attack in spain or ireland than they will be if there is one in russia, america, or somesuch. It would also mean that you're not so much required to be active in every country, but eventually you WILL be required to be active in every area.

Also, it'd be cool if they took into account how far away your nearest base was. So, for example, if you only have a base in europe, people will be more understanding about alien activity in america- and far more impressed by the same level of activity as your local europeans would be. (of course, this would have to wear off after time- eventually they would start saying: If XCOM is doing so well, why don't they have a base here? What about all the funding we're paying?)
