xcom util can't find the game.

I use DosBox (didn't work from the ms-prompt either) and unzipped the contents of xcom util 9.60 in the C:\MPS\UFO\folder. When running xcusetup.bat it displays the error: "Game not found in this directory".

The beta version of xcom util displays the exact same error. My version of UFO is 1.4 (DOS) and I run Windows XP SP3. I'm probably running into some incompatibility?

I only want xcom util to fix the difficulty bug. I can't find a way to manually edit the difficulty of a save-game.

Thank you.

Just a long shot here, but are the Xcomutil file actually in the UFO directory, or did they get unzipped in an xcomutil\ directory inside the UFO directory?

You know, that's strange. If they're all located together it should work.

Anyhow, if it's only the difficulty bug you want fixed, and you're using Windows XP, I can walk you through a method of fixing the difficulty bug. This does the same thing that XComutil does, it's just performing it manually.

First of all, make a back up copy of your c:\mps\ufo\ufoexe\geoscape.exe file in case anything goes wrong.

Go to start > run

Type edit and hit ok. This will open MS-Edit.

In MS-Edit, go to file and open and locate your game directory and the UFOEXE folder. A quicker way is to just type c:\MPS\UFO\UFOEXE into the file field.

Click on Geoscape.exe, click on the Binary checkbox and enter 100 into the line width field. Then hit ok. Don't worry about the ascii symbols that pop up.

Press insert to change the cursor to the block cursor. This is extremely important as you want to overwrite data, not insert new data.

Refer to the 'line' and 'col' values in the lower right hand corner of the screen. Navigate the cursor down to line 957 and col 77. With the cursor in that location the Value field next to them should read 60, and the cursor should be resting on a

Press shift+2 to enter a @ in its place. Use the left cursor key to go back over it and you should see a 64 in the value field.

Now go to file>save then file>exit.

From here on, any new game your game creates will properly save the difficulty levels.

While in edit-mode I noticed that I couldn't reach the file.. Apparently one of the sub-folders was marked as "hidden". I unmarked that. Also the GeoScape.exe was on the CD and not in the UFO-folder. So I made an ISO and used MagicIso to edit the Geoscape.exe inside the iso. After editing I mount the edited ISO.

I started a new game on superhuman to test it. The first UFO that appeared was a large scout with 7 Sectoids. The 2nd large scout that appeared had 9 Sectoids. I suppose that means it worked because on beginner it's not possible to have 9 aliens in a large scout right? I hoped to see some battleships right in the first month on superhuman though :(.

Many thanks.

Having part of the files on CD must have been what was causing the problem with Xcomutil, since it couldnt' find the executables. You can actually transfer all the missing files to the hard disk installation to complete it.

Ah I didn't know that.

But if I mount the wrong CD or use an original geoscape.exe by default again, does the difficulty then reset to beginner again or does it stay at superhuman for existing savedgames that are loaded?

As long as the geoscape.exe in your hard drive copy has been fixed, all new game that it creates will have the difficulty levels set correctly. The way the game was built, it's meant to first check the local drive for all the necessary files, and if it can't find it, it'll look in any alternative drive. In the case of the CD version of the game, local folders first, then the CD drive.

If that's not happening, there might be a few tweaks that need to be done with the ufo.bat file or which ever file you use to start the game.
