Motion Scanner

I've owned this game for quite a long time and never really beat it. I've just re-installed it and started playing it again. Since then I've been finding myself using the Motion Scanner to help keep my guys facing in the direction of moving lifeforms.

Is this item useful middle and late game? I've never gotten that far into the game. Currently I just got the Devastator weapon to research (I think that's what it is...it's red looking anyway) and I have my squad members equipped with Motion Scanners to help find aliens. Although this doesn't help during those times that they group up in one location and not move around -- that's an annoying surprise.

So are Motion Scanners worth using that much? I've though them to be nice additions to my squad members equipment to use.

Consider its secondary scanning method: Relative motion. When you move, objects and enemies within the scanner's range are highlighted. Not much use in an area with a lot of corpses, but it can be used when you need to look for an alien in the area that's not moving.

I suppose but when I'm not seeing any lifeform movement on the radar, I usually proceed with extreme caution. I've been ambushed too many times and had to reload a perfectly smooth going mission just to kill that last alien. I've also rushed into rooms packed full of standing aliens just to get a large number of Agents wiped out just to finish the mission. I don't consider that a very successful mission. LOL

I think it's the best defense against...those little blue things that run up and explode (Poppers? I haven't played in too long :P ).

Yeah, I think they're great against them. That and swarms of Hyperworm that have often came out of absolutely no where and ate a couple of my Agents to death. Then I witness as the one or two Popper come running out of no where and BBQ the rest of my Agents. Every time I see them in stock I buy them all out and throw them in inventory for some of my Agents. :P

I hate being surprised in Apoc and the Motion Scanner makes it easier for me to move my Agents further into the mission more cautiously to prevent them from getting owned.

Well, it's just a useful tool that you can choose to use whenever you want. I mean, it's better to have it when you suddenly need it than to run around blind (or in my case, deaf - I don't have sound). It's such a small device, why don't you keep one permanently on your pointman's shoulder. You don't need more than that in any case.

By the way, hire some androids if you haven't and get them running ahead. Moving forward with caution is good, but don't forget that you can also retreat if you rush into too many enemies. That's where loneandroid runners (or swordsmen/grapplers, in my case) come in handy.

I got like four or five androids last night and made them all heavy weapon users. I also just got Toxiguns and Devastators. :)

I still don't know why I can't research personal shields yet because I've been through a number of missions where my Agents have been facing off against Aliens with personal shields. Perhaps I should change my Auto Cannon ammo to AP instead of using IE and HE. <_<

I think I'll use teleporting Swordsman after I get the personal teleporter. B)

As for the Motion Scanner, I always have them being used on multiple squad members since they don't take up too much space. I do this to make my squads versitile in switching up inventory. Like switching out a weapon for the scanner so it's a weapon/scanner combination that the guy is holding in his hands. Then I make someone else use an extra weapon -- like mini-launchers; which I've found recently to be quite useful and I have a couple guys with them in their inventory.

NKF, I don't have sound either. It's annoying cause I really liked the sound quality in the game that I remember -- I love the sound of aliens dying for some reason. :) Perhaps if my brother would ever get around to helping me get my lap top up and running I'd just load Apoc on there and play it from the lap top; which would also be used for my college work and not just gaming too.

Ah, shields. Have you captured any? You won't be able to research them if the shields are destroyed. You can capture shields by stunning the alien with stun gas, using the mind bender to disarm or stun the alien, or since you've got toxiguns, just defeat the shielded aliens with toxiguns. Toxigun rounds go right through disrupter shields, leaving them intact.

Be sure to send a sample of the shields to the research base for analysis.

Yeah, I'll have to switch out my Auto Cannon ammo for AP rounds instead of HE and IN. I need those shields badly! However, only so much I can do with my limited resources. I guess I should just mass produce Toxiguns and ammo for a little bit and get the rest of my Agents carrying them. :)

I still don't know how to get the Advanced Bio and Workshop. @_@

Advanced Bio. If I'm not mistaken, you need to complete the set of live and dead aliens in the multiworm life cycle. Or was it just the multiworm? Well, gather the set anyway.

The advanced workshop should reveal itself when you get the all research necessary to construct the Dimension Probe. That requires a Type-3 Transport UFO, and two of the three UFO components to start with.

Only other problem is it picks up walls, furniture and anything relative to your agent. <_>

That's funny. I think I'll have to check which aliens I haven't gotten yet and get them to research for the Advanced Bio lab. Cause I know I've done pretty much everything but Overspawn, Megaspawn, and Queenspawn.

True, but all unit blips (and unfortunately, corpses) are still distinct dots on the radar regardless of the walls. This is mainly a problem when there are too many units around you.

Well when I don't see anything moving on the scanner, I proceed with caution and move my squads in smaller groups of two. Since their reaction and accuracy is high enough, they can support one another in small groups of two. Kind of like fighter pilots today that have wing men. :)

So far the strategy works fairly well in covering a lot of ground quickly and I normally assign each small group with particular tasks. Like one group takes point, one is supporting fire with Motion Scanner, and the other is rear guard and cover fire. Also, that depends primarily on what my Agents have equipped. I normally have a squad contain at least two Agents that have a Motion Scanner. That way I'm flexible in who's scanning or not.
