Base View With Outside

Stow

I just thought itd be nice if your view of the base was at an angle, but you see the base actually sitting on the ground. Landscape could be one of like 8 or so different landscapes to reflect where the base is located in the world.

Not that important really, but it could add a nice touch...

the base is underground, not above. You would porbably see a little outhouse looking building covering the entrance.

The thing with making the base defence 2 parts is that generally the fight will just be on the surface. you would either win their or lose, it is unlikely that you would be able to pull enough men back to be able to mount an effective defence inside the base.

Maybe you could have a choice for base defence?

You could wait in the base for them to attack, or you could try a pre emptive surface assault to try and catch them off guard. Maybe even add in a specific objective like destroy parts of the landing ship to cause it to explode/crash/ be forced to leave?

I think Plasma cannons that obliterate an interceptor in one shot would level the ground around your base, so I'd never let my guys stay above ground in a base attack... I WOULD, however, position them better if I knew the ennemy was coming for half an hour... :naughty:

Perhaps reaction time should have something to do with it. Say, if you spot the attacking UFO in time, you can mount a defensive position, or if it slips by unnoticed somehow, you get aliens knocking at your front door. Er, front elevator, that is.

My point exactly...

Defensive positions could still be in the underground base, but surprise makes a heck of a difference...

How about a base structure designed as an internal defense point??

I say as long as you actually saw the ship on radar coming to attack you, you should be able to decide who is outside and who is inside. If any xcorp are outside, then the game should give you 5 turns to position your troops. Same with the inside. Why would people be laying in bed when I saw the battleship coming from 900 miles away?

Oh, the outside battle should occasionally show a hangar door or defence cannon door open, just detail.

What about both sections happen? While the base is on high alert(every time a BS is within a certain distance) you can decide how many men are outside or inside. Once the attack starts, you get to position men in both areas(along with any inventory you need in a particular spot(i.e. ammo). Then you can pull men back as they are fighting outside, or let them try to repel the attack. So each base invasion is automatically 1-2 missions. Of course PB blasts on the surface would be a problem. It could also lead to the use of SA type weapons, probably advanced SAMs.

It makes sense that alien craft weapons would make short work of anything on the ground level, so when aliens get through your air defenses an underground battle should be the order of the day.

However, I've always wondered why I don't have to kill anything when I down a UFO with base defenses (is it really so different from downing them with an Interceptor?). Perhaps in the cases that your base defenses work, you get a ground level base defense mission where the survivors crawl from the wreckage and make a grab for your outhouse/elevator.

Think about it.

You're the chief reason that they don't have this planet yet.

They're not going to pussyfoot in with just a battleship full of soldiers on its terror load.

No.

No they will not.

They'll be barrelling everything they have at you, because without you they win. Simple. So base defences should be absolutely massive serious affairs, and without some kind of defences and loads of troops, you're screwed. This would put a great emphasis on defence weapons. Even if you shoot them down some may be still alive. Therefore, you'll need to defend on the surface.

Add to this the fact that they are considering putting non-combatants INSIDE the base, winning the war outside could be important, but difficult.
