Darkside
I'm playing the collector's edition made for Windows, and the sounds are screwed up. Some things sound OK but most of the music is just awful, not how I rememebr it. Like in the intro, when the muton is shooting the plasma rifle, I dont hear it fire and people scream anymore? I disabled hardware acceleration on my sound card, anyhting else I can try?
spacekdet
CE sound and FX are just crap compared with DOS ver.
Guest Jim69
Delete all the sound files, that's what I did but don't delete the catalog file, that the game needs to run.

j'ordos
yes, that removes the music altogether (if you REALLY hate it ). There is no solution to this problem, but to get the old dos version up and running .
Guest Jim69
Or, if you are bored, take some music from Xenocide and put it into UFO. You get to test how effective the new music is first hand then Edit: Why did I not think of doing that before That would test how annoying music would be after you play the game all the way through a couple of times. Damn, I surprise myself sometimes :alienlol: Edited September 26, 2003 by Jim69
Darkside
My DOS version is long gone... if I had it though, I'd probably never get it working on my system! I remember all the tweaking I had to do on my old computer with autoexec.bat and config.sys trying to get enough conventional memory to run the game. spacekdet
Use dosbox CVS for the dos version its still laggy I find but its no where as much lagg as turbo .. but then again using the windows GUI for it I dont have any sound :crying:
Darkside
Wow some miracles tonight! I actually found my CD for the old version of XCom, and I isntalled DosBox emulator and now it works GREAT! The music and sound is just how I remember it from many years ago- not the mutilated version of the colelctors edition. Plus to top it off the speed is great with the battlescapes after tweaking the emulator speed a little. Just the geoscape is a bit choppy but that's fine by me. Thanks to the people who made DosBox and the people here who have been spreading it's glory!
Guest Omen
Where do you find the xenocide music? I really want to get rid of that chopper music
j'ordos
If you intend to replace the music with the xenocide music, that won't work unless you somehow convert the .ogg to .mid format
SupSuper
and, afaik, there's no way to convert stuff to MID format (you have to make one yourself) -_- the only thing i hated about the CE was that it really screwed most good stuff on ufo (music, sound, intro). however, tftd was improved for the best
fux0r666
I have an abandonware version of UFO unknown that seem to run in XP as if it's CE but has the sound of the original version, if anyone is interested. I got if off of the cdos community but I would be happy to share. Drop me a line.
