Although the aliens are all under the control of the "mother brain" at Cydonia, there still may be conflicts between the races that may lead to two groups of aliens duking it out, and X-COM could be a mediator of the dispute, or even just sit back and watch the fireworks. There may also be new alien races, under no influence of the alien brain, that could also join in the combat (similar to the "Alien Mercenaries" thread below).

Could any of this actually work?

Yes.

It could work, but I'm not sure that they'd allow Xcom to mediate between them (unless you mean mediate with a heavy plasma)

But I don't think the overmind would allow its soldiers to fight each other when they should be off killing/abducting humans.

Another 'neutral' alien race could work. They could really hate the overmind, but wouldn't intervene on our behalf due to politics or something. So they would covertly provide us with equipment, similar to what the US did in Afganistan when it was invaded by the Soviet Union.

And then, when we annhilate the overmind, we discover that these aliens were evil too, and we have to kill them now.

That sounds pretty close to Aftermath's storyline, and it would be great to have it developed more; however, it may tick off people with strong 'us vs the aliens' views (at least, lots of people opposed biotech enhancements on these grounds in another thread).

... and then, when we kill those other aliens, we discover that we ourselves are evil too (three?), hence X-COM changes profile :naughty:
Endure; in enduring, grow strong.

No, humans can never be evil! It is always the aliens that are evil!
