Xenocide Fails To Start

Guest Tob

Recommended Posts

Hello. Ive been following the site for a little while, nice work! I would like to run the alpha but never been able to.

my Engine Report.txt file:

-- Log Begin

Error found: Uknown error.

and my Engine Assertion Out.txt is blank.

I see under minimum requirements its listed win98. Is Win2k ok?
Otherwise its an AMD 1.4 athlon with a NVIDIA Geforce FX 5200 dual output video card. Drivers are uptodate from NVIDIAs website. 512 MB RAM on an Abit Motherboard.

What gives? any help is appreciated!

Windows 2k is reknown for being absolutly useless to games, do all the other games you have on the system run fine? I used to have it but changed after a month when I realised that 50% of my games didn't run on it :cussing:

As long as Win 2k wasn't a copied version you can get a discount on Win XP I think.

i disagree. Both 2K and XP are based around NT kernel, and they should be quite similar to each other.

The rumours, that games wont run well on 2K is not absolutely correct - dos games do not run well on 2k (because MS moved from dos-based operating systems (9X, ME) to NT-based (2k, XP)).

All windows applications (including games) should run fine.
There can be some acces violations though, as some old windows games (dated back to 96/97) might be interacting with the hardware directly (dos way) rather than using winapi.

Anyway, i think that the problem is somehow driver (directx?) related. Could you please post more specifics about your computer?

Well, I don't know who is right here. So why don't you just get the most recent direct x and other drivers for your computer and check if it works. If not, just post again and we will work on it.

It is either the os or the drivers. I think.

I've never had problems with windows 2k :/
Except some (not many) really old dosgames that is.

Edit: always update to see if anyone else has posted before you click send... Edited by LordT

Well the only difference is that the graphics driver is outside the kernel in W2000, for WXP they put it in the kernel again...
I think that is the first time I hear Xenocide tested on
NVIDIA Geforce FX 5200 dual output video card
. It could be a problem there.
It worked on my FX 5200 128mb card.

it might be the graphics card. when i had a geforce4 the alpha worked fine for me, but now that i got a geforce fx 5200 it doesn't work again, so it might be the same problem for you.

xenocide alpha is weird :P

I have the latest DirectX 9.0b. I got off windowsupdate.com 2 weeks ago. Ummm more system specs?

the video card is a G-Force FX 5200 AGP Verto 128MB DDR dual VGA +S-video. Made by PNY technologies. I am running the latest NVidia drivers from their website. I turned antialiasing off btw to see if that would help, no luck. Two sony 21" Monitors on my desk.

Win2k with all the service packs and all possible updates from Microsoft.
1.4 Athlon on an Abit MB w/512MB ram. SB live sound card. Double Quantum 30 gig fireball drives running on a highpoint RAID controller (striping)

Mitsumi CD Burner, Sony CD-ROM, generic DVD drive.

Anything else I can try?
Thanks

well, you can always do this:
1. Go to Start > Run
2. type dxdiag and press OK
3. go to the Display tab
4. in the Notes area, check if there's some sort of issue with your graphics cardr ("XXX drive is not digitally signed" is not an issue ;) )
5. If it's all clear, test the DirectDraw/Direct3D (use the buttons for it)
6. If the tests come out okay, then... it means it's not a problem with your graphics card. hmmm...

actually this is what the guys of technical support always tell me to do when i've got a display problem, so i thought i put it over here in case it finds out something :P

ok here might be the problem:

Direct3D 8 test results: Failure at step 32 (User verification of Direct3D rendering): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code)

didn't see one of the spining cubes... but still saw the NVIDIA logo. all other tests passed.

as requested... my full dxdiag.txt file

hope this helps! Thanks!
ok here might be the problem:

Direct3D 8 test results: Failure at step 32 (User verification of Direct3D rendering): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code)

didn't see one of the spining cubes... but still saw the NVIDIA logo. all other tests passed.
that might be a problem. only problem is, i can't figure out what kind of problem :P since i'm no technician.
maybe u've got a bad copy of directx? besides updating drivers u should always update directx ( http://www.microsoft.com/directx )
That and update the drivers eh? :D
indeed. do they think we're brainless twits or something? ;)

Toby's version of DirectX is up-to-date (v9.0b) so that's probably not the problem. It is probably more something to do with the video drivers. Try updating them, or if they're the latest, go back and try previous versions. There have been times when the latest version wasn't actually the best.

I have the same problem, my specs :
Windows XP Pro
512 Ram DDR 400
Athlon XP 2400
Geforce 4 MX 440 AGP 8X (drivers are detonator 52.16)
DirectX 9.0b

When I try to run :

-- Log Begin

Error found: Uknown error.

Then I tried to run with windows 95 and then 98/Me compatibility, the result for them :

-- Log Begin

Error found: PNGLoader::Couldnt open the file: .//images/xenocide_button_pressed.png.

The file IS there...

Tried installation on default folder and another folder, same thing on all.

Engine Assertion Out always empty.

BTW, running alpha 3, I never tried any older version so I don't know if they work.

Your problem is that the files aren't in the correct folders. Reinstall it or download the one current on the Xenocide download page to get the proper directory structure.
