Alpha Feedback

I just got to downloading and tryin out the new alpha version and I had no problems with it. It seemed to start up faster (but that might have just been my imagination) and I like the new look. I tried all the buttons and everything works, except when I click a button it highlights, and stays highlighted. When I click it a second time it unhighlights. That's the only bug i've yet to experience.

I like the look and have't encountered any bugs. One that I'd like to suggest to be implemented later is a variable speed that the user can set for rotation speed or a variable speed dependant on how zoomed in you are. I noticed that if you zoom in much, it rotates way too quickly to be very useful.

Just an idea.

It is a math error, it was an ad-hoc solution... not a really thinked one. The Globe is not centered so the center goes along another path... will tweak the constants for the new release...

I had corrected the zoom in rotation speed issue, too...

It says that people with Radeon video cards should post if the Alpha runs. Well, I have a Radeon 9800 Pro and it ran great, 280 fps! I was able to rotate and zoom the globe. I should point out that there was a very obvious line running between the two poles going through the Pacific ocean. I'm guessing this is where the globe rendering starts and stops. When I click on the buttons a blue light comes on, which I can turn off again by clicking on the button again. I was able to click on the time buttons and they depressed. Oh and if I click around on the buttons too much the game crashes to the desktop, but considering there was no exit button that might be a good thing. :)

The graphics look fantastic! I think this is going to be a huge hit.

If you need some people to do any typing or writing type work I'd be happy to help out. Unfortunately I don't have the skills to help in the other departments (graphics/programming).

Considering the north pole is melting at a very alarming rate, indicating the oceans may rise faster than previously estimated... :(

To anyone who doesn't understand how to exit: It quit in the ALPHA not the full game, you should click the options menu item.

Excuse me? What is CTD besided the ctd department of which I am a part?

Clicking the options button exits, for the time being. Remember that xenocide alphas are currently just a sort of test to see how easily we can program the geoscape. The final release will be great, and even if it isn't, we can still work on it to make it great, unlike many game companies.

I do understand that this is only an alpha version, and I am glad I found this project since I was (and stil am) an UFO series fan. The following notes, questions, posible sugestions were written only in the spirit of curiosity and maybe contribution to the game.
The most important stuff to be said is:  GREAT idea and GREAT work so far.

Sugestions. Notes. Questions:

 - The left-right scroll buttons are linked to the ecuatorial line. This is probably optimized for keeping a normal view while rotating, BUT if you get closer to the poles and zoom in a lot you might find a totaly diferent behaviour of the left-right scroll button effect. It is no longer left-right, but circled. Is is possible not to link the horizontal scrolling to the ecuatorial line but instead to the image horizontal mid-line ? This way it would not rotate but slide the image to the viewer.
I realy do not remember how it worked in Ufo1 or Ufo2 but it could be better with the current mid-line instead of the ecuatorial line.
If so, a "reset view" button could also take form when the globe would look like totaly weird.

-_- - Another sugestion would be to use those buttons only as an alternative. I know those were part of UFO1,UFO2 geoscape design, but it is kind of annoying to move the mouse to the corner of the screen everytime you want to scroll a bit.
It could be better to use the space around the planet for a special left (or right) click that would rotate the planet oposite to that direction (rotating you directly towards that direction). Or maybe use a combination of some key and left-mouse-button, like CTRL-LMB to rotate the view.

<_< - Sometimes the right button "rotate view to right" does not work. I have to use another of the three remaining buttons to unlock the freezed one.

^_^ - I have a file in my "c:\Program Files\XenocideAlpha3\" dir called "Engine Assertion Out.txt" with the following contents:

User Assertion Message: The allocated Unique Object IDs (UIDs) freed is not the same as the allocated UIDs. Posible resource leak..
Assert Condition: (signed int) recycledIDs.size () == currentIDCounter found in I:\Programacion\3dengine.cvs\gdsengine\src\kernel\objectresources.cpp, 21

Is this normal behaviour?

- I remember that at first launch, I did not hear any music. Probably I was using Winamp or something else so the device was in use. Could this be why the previous message was created?

- Also in the readme file you tell us (probably obsolete mesage) that we have to copy the TTF files in Fonts dir, but it seems the installing procedure allready did this.

<_< - There is a xenocide_geoscape_background.png but no background to the globe when program is executed. I presume it was not implemented yet, but in the case it has, it does not show on my computer.

- To the musical dep. (you probably have a band or joined some great musicians :D there), the music is great, realy. The only thing I would like to suggest is to make it more repeating friendly. The begining and ending gap is a little big for my repeating taste. It does not sound continuous.

And again amazing work with graphics and sound and everything.
If I click the Options buttom, it will CTD. Is that OK ?
i wonder how many users have said that.

maybe u should've added a "Are you sure you want to quit?" message :P

Hey! Ive got an idea to make people play xenocide forever!
How about, instead of "are you sure you want to quit" we have "are sure you want to crash your computer?" Or how about "you're quitting? Im going to make you an offer you cant refuse. Either you stay, or I will crash your computer!" :)

Seriously though, so many people complained about the ctd error that J'ordos pinned up a thread about it.

AlienKID:

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. Some people (including me) are not able to see the background image while running the program, but most people can. Like they said, the Options button is supposed to exit the program. Good to know the font installer worked, too.

hm, id like to add a simple suggestion about the UI... Is this the right place to do this? anyway, lets get started.

When i click on the button, it gets highlighted.

Wouldnt it be nicer, if it would get highlighted when i hover it with my mouse or something?:)

just an idea and maybe it has been discussed before.

The highliting buttons is a placeholder. When the game is done, the buttons will not highlite, they will open a new screen (such as bases, or x-net)

Don't worry about not being made a project member yet, hull, I think the admins havn't noticed your post yet. Just give them some time, they are usually quite puntcual about it once they know.

eh, im not worried about anything ( yet ;) ), simply wanted to say, that IMHO onmouseover instead of onMouseClick would look much better (like, when i move my mouse over the button, it highlights and when i click, it opens a dialog)

btw, I believe that im in a way other timezone, its nearly 1AM here:) Edited by hull

I absolutely LOVE, and I mean LOOOOOOOVVE the way the shadows on the mountains move. As time goes by watching day REALISTICLY going to night, seeing the sun move across the mountains/terain as the earth rotates... great job guys.
Then what is the point of having 60+ fps in a game? ^_^
Buggered if I know, I'm sure that I can notice when the frame rate drops to around 40 or so, maybe just my imagination

It could be a little while before there's actually the ability to kick some alien &$$. So far the alphas have been proof of concept for the project. Our goal is to keep working until Xenocide is complete, but it could be several years since this is just a hobby for most people on the project.

There is also the plan for autocombat so that the strategic game can be developed without the need for the tactical portion, allowing parallel development. So really the butt kickin' might be the last item completed. Hard to say.

I would say all of us do this as a hobby... noone works for xenocide, unless someone have enough money to dont need to work...

Very impressive for a non funded project. I have just finished UFO: AM and have to say that I have been a little disappointed with the lack of scope of the game, compared to the xcom games. IMHO the globe looks better than that of the UFO AM game. Incidentally it runs at a steady 60fps on my humble Athlon 2500XP, 5200FX system.

I truly hope you keep up the good work, as this really deserves a release. If you achieve it, it will probably stand as the benchmark for future open source, homebrewn games.

If what Slaughter says is true on the www.ufoaftermath.co.uk forum is correct about the progress then I am staggered in what you have already achieved.

Congratulations.

Thank you for your encouragement and faith in our project. You're free to lend a helping hand if you're interested in helping in any part of the game. We'll be making a release of a new alpha later this week. Be sure to stick around and check it out.
