Apoc On Good 'ol Vista

Recommended Posts

Been a while.

So yeah, my new laptop comes with vista. Everything works fine, except for one little hiccup. The game won't install from the CD. Some problem with the install program being incompatible with 64-bit Vista. I assume the solution is just copy/paste the files directly from the CD to a new folder. The question is, which files? All of them? And since I know there's going to be more tinkering once the files are on my comp, can someone forward me to a guide for that crap?

Should've remembered to transfer everything from my old PC. Too late now.

I've never tried Dosbox with Vista, but if it works, then the installation should work too.

You gotta mount a destination directory PLUS mount a CD drive for Dosbox. Then install. You can get a NO CD crack after. This install only works on the Middle installation (lite, normal or optimum) because of the HD capacity from dosbox. I got my installed this way, plus I used the no CD crack, works fine for me.

I never even thought about running the install file through Dosbox. Looks like it's working now, so thanks.

EDIT: Well, it's installed, and it looks like it wants to run, but once I run the application (xcomapoc.exe), it will act like it's going to work, then spits me back to the dosbox screen with the c:\> prompt flashing. So close, yet so far. Running the game on XP needed me to run VDM sound, a no-cd crack, etc., in order to work. Anybody know if that's needed for Vista as well?

I don't have any Vista specific knowledge, but I know that a no-cd crack is not required to run apoc in DosBox in XP, although that doesn't seem to be common knowledge here. I don't know why it would be any different in Vista. I can install and run the game with the following mount commands (I just retested this, as well) using the Optimal install setting:

mount c c:\games\dos2 -freesize 300
mount d f:\ -t cdrom -ioctl
c:
cd xcoma

The freesize parameter may no longer be necessary in 0.73 because I think they increased the default to 300 or 500. The rest of my .conf file is the default generated by 0.73 except for memsize which I increased to 24.

Conversely, if you rip a CUE/BIN image from your CD, you can run without it by mounting this way (and thus avoid lengthy pauses while the disc spins up) without having to use any crack:

mount c c:\games\dos2 -freesize 300
imgmount d c:\games\dos\xcomacd\cd.bin -t iso -fs iso
c:
cd xcoma
echo xcomapoc starts

An ISO image will NOT work without a crack because it is missing data.

I can't remember if I actually tried installing it with the CUE/BIN image though, or if I set that up after installing it. I have to get to work so I don't have time to try that one now.

Blargh.

So. It works, and I can live with it as is. However...

I can't find a config file anywhere. trying to manually adjust the cycles in dosbox results in either 1% (stuttering, freezing, etc.) or 5% (no noticeable change).

That's my biggest problem- it's hard to keep track of what's going on when an enemy turn lasts all of ten seconds. I'm also curious as to whether there's a way to get the sound to work?

I miss XP. At least I could figure that out.

In the latest version, the default location for your dosbox.conf file is in Vista's equivalent to c:\documents and settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Dosbox\ (I don't know Vista, it might not be precisely that), which is where programs are supposed to keep their user configuration files, even though that's rather inconvenient in Windows and hard to find if you aren't directed to it. There is a way to generate a config file in dosbox's directory though through dosbox, and you can just use that. Sound should work just fine if you install with the same sound settings that are in the dosbox config file. In 0.73 this is SoundBlaster16 IRQ7 DMA5 by default.

Speedwise, I haven't tried turn-based on Apocalypse, and realtime is just fine with cycles=max. I would try something like cycles=fixed 30000 to start with, and cycleup=2000 and cycledown=2000, and adjust those values until you find what you like. If there's some way to toggle between max and fixed while the game is running that would probably be better though.

Theril, you are incredibly awesome. Sounds is working now (I forgot to set it up with the SETUP file, whoops) and running at 20000 cycles seems to be perfect. I have beaten Vista!

...I'll worry about UFO Defense later, though I don't recall that being as tough to setup before. :P

Yeah, the only tough part I remember about setting up UFO is deciding which bugs- err, I mean, which version you want to use :P

Anyone have X-com Apoc DL link? The one in sticky expired... I think I trashed Cd when it didn't work on xp around 2003...

I was wondering if anyone could translate the thread in to lamens terms.

Just get steam and buy it for 4.99. Works perfectly on vista 64. Been trying to run my old cd copy for ages and then just thought "if-you-see-Kay it" and bought from steam.

Works like a charm, took only about 15 mins to download. There is music and full sounds too. ON VISTA!

They also got the xcom package, which has also ufo defense, TFTD, interceptor and enforcer for 14.99.
