Mystery Melee Crash ?

Recommended Posts

Playing TFTD gold with the patched loader files.

Been playing many missions, my best soldier has 32 missions & 73 kills.

So... obviously everything has been fine for quite a few missions.

Occassionally i'll get a random bug that brings up the "send / don't send" error box.

But, usually i just restart the game & load a recent save & no harm no foul.

About 3-4 missions ago i started getting weird bugs when i would attempt to shock stick an alien to death,

he would make the animation of an alien going down to the ground, but then my screen would still have a flashing "1" box

indicated a visible alien in the aquanots field of vision. turns out the alien is actually INVISIBLE and still standing...

no matter how many times i shocked certain aliens they would just flop & go invisible, and i could shock the invisible alien,

and he would "flop" again & remain invisible... basically invincible vs shock stick attacks, but could be killed by gunfire/explosions.

SO... wasn't horribly concerned about that, because sometimes i could shock aliens down & capture them.

BUT NOW it's worse... last mission every time a lobster on level 2 of a colony attack would melee, BOOM, instant game crash,

if i tried to shock them, BOOM, game crash. I was able to therm shock them down or kill them by violence, but ANY melees crashed the game.

Now i'm on the next mission, i've restarted game & computer, and ANY melee of any sort will game crash.

I'm attempting to do a lobster terror attack mission & obviously there are lobsters all over meleeing civilians that i can't do anything about.

Is there a fix for this? Am i the only one this has happened to????

Running under Win XP

plenty of memory / specs

All I can suggest is find another copy of TFTD. Your game might be corrupt.

I've heard of a memory loop error, but nothing specific about it.

I suspect that this might be my issue... though I'm not sure of anything ATM.

No, your game isn't corrupt and it's sort of related to a memory loop. Basically what happened is that the game has a limit to the number of items which can exist on the battlescape at one time (in this case TFTD has space for 200 objects - be it weapons, equipment, or corpses). In most USO missions this limit is meaningless as there is plenty of room to spare with your side capped to 80 items. But on bigger USOs or on terror missions, there are a lot more units which spawn which means more items too. The item table fills up fast in this instance. ;)

When you try to stun an alien and your item file is filled to capacity, the game first creates a stunned alien "item" on the battlescape. But since the file is full, it is replaced by the unit again. The only way to break the loop so to speak is to destroy some items. Either burn through some excess clips or toss a Sonic Pulser over the items to hopefully create more room. Once you have room again, then stunning should work the way it should. :blush1:

i don't think that is related to the melee crash bug in that case...

the lobster terror mission i just started can't go past turn 1, b/c the lobsters are meleeing civilians (i presume)

and the game is crashing with ANY melee attacks (alien or xcom)

i do not yet have vibroblade tech tree, but lobster hits, bio drone hits, or shocksticks any melee on either side & game has error

send or don't send box

You can also upload the zipped game here. When you are posting, look under the post box. There should be an Attachments area. Click the browse button, navigate to your zipped file then click on the upload button. One the file is uploaded to the forums (usually takes a matter of seconds), click on the "Manage Current Attachments" bar and then click on the green add button. The file should show up in your post. :)

WELL WELL WELL... LOL

Great news & slightly bad news...

i was on level 2 of a colony assault & walking around blindly up to lobsters to get them to melee for a nearby save

and i got meleed aplenty... but no game crash :-)

bad news, i seem to be unable to re-produce my game crashing bug anymore (i'll cry alot about it later)

WOOT!

just FYI, aliens always start off at the top right side of the map. I rarely have them venture to the bottom left side in my game.

oh i by blindly i just meant with no strategy or reason other than directly looking to get meleed by lobbies

........ sigh OMG... seriously???

if it's not one thing it's another... always

okay, NOW when an alien is attempting to MC/Panic me game crashes WTF?!

melees working fine now...

sigh... uploading most recent Geoscape Save, & dead-end moment of combat save

maybe this has something to do with the melee/MC yellow attack animation??? *confused*

............ SO....

i reload a recent pre-battle save,

land same site, same team, same gear

fan out & dont shoot at anything, hallucines come melee & that's fine,

some of agents got mc/panic attempted & that was fine, & my tank got tentaslutted to death

no game crash.......

*sigh* not sure what is going on :(

but if it isn't consistent, there's no way to know what the problem is :(

well, going by that, I think you should just reload each time. It's way quicker than giving us the game to let it run.

well... it's a little annoying,

but yeah i'll just save it before i touch down for a battle each time & if it starts going crazy i'll just load the pre battle save

it is a little annoying to be 80% done with a mission & then get meleed by a lobster,

only to discover that instead of losing 1 soldier, you've gotta reload the entire mission & do it all over :(
