Xcom: Aftermath

Dirty Harry Potter

Recommended Posts

im sure some of you knows about this, but there's a new xcom game coming X-com: Aftermath

Gameplay highlights include:

-Simultaneous turn-based combat:

-combines the best of the real-time and turn-based combat systems;

-Randomly generated tactical missions: Each playing field is unique, no two games are the same;

-Strong RPG elements: your soldiers will improve as they gain more experience, allowing you to make specialists like snipers, medics, and many more;

-Intricate, rich, and frighteningly alien setting displayed in full 3D.

also it looks like you only can control up to 7 men - at least that's what i make out if the screenies

to me it looks like a X-com'ified fallout tactics game, but still nice. - sorry for posting this in the wrong forum, could an admin move it to the general xcom forum?

post your thoughs about it here

And yes, I believe we've all heard of it. I have been tracking it for two and a half years.

I think some people are under the impression that because UFO: Aftermath is neither advertised now discussed on this website (like all the other xcom websites do) that people do not know about the game. That is untrue.

From their website, I am not really enthusiastic about the game. They seem to be diverging from the combination of what made the game fun, and they appear to be leaving the economic management behind and only keeping the combat... :erm: Well, whatever... If you like playing Jagged Alliance but with aliens, then you might like it. Have fun.

I have not heard of it, before. Nice with some combatision :P

Gameplay highlights include:

-Simultaneous turn-based combat:

-So the turns come after each other? Weee :wacko: new feature!

-combines the best of the real-time and turn-based combat systems;

-So you have to wait for it to be our turn, while the aliens can run arround and shot even on your turn? :P

-Randomly generated tactical missions: Each playing field is unique, no two games are the same;

-No, the first mission is called mission 001, and the second is 002 :P

-Strong RPG elements: your soldiers will improve as they gain more experience, allowing you to make specialists like snipers, medics, and many more;

-You can in X-com: enemy unknown. It is just to type Mark Nash (Medic) as the name :P

-Intricate, rich, and frighteningly alien setting displayed in full 3D.

-:D rich aliens? You mean they are running arround in expensive suits? :P :P

It doesn't look like an X-Com game, is it?

It was inspired by the xcom games and orignally developed by the makers of UFO Defense.

Dreamland Chronicles was the one being developed by the original creators of XCom: UFO Defense. For funding reasons IIRC, the project got cancelled and this company either bought the source code or licensing or whatever but after tinkering with it for a few months they decided to start from scratch, abandoning everything from Dreamland Chronicles. (One nifty feature of dreamland chronicles, was you can enter a 1st person mode for each of your soldiers in squad, and target aliens that way! seemed pretty neat)

Yeah this game is simultaneous turn, but it wont be crazy because you can pause anytime you want, and onc ertain events. For example, if you're progressing through a mission in real time and a soldier spots an alien, immediately the game pauses and you can alter your orders. I think you can specify other events to pause the game.

My biggest gripes are:

  • cannot customize your bases
  • cannot enter buildings during a mission
  • battlescape is not totally destructable like XComs, only selec tobjects are destructable
  • during ANY mission you are LIMITED TO ONLY 7 guys!!! That's absurd IMO because either that means your guys are Rambos or the aliens are weaklings. You almost cannot afford casualties. It ruins a big feel of XCom, which is that aliens are super human highly advanced, and you need an army of guys to combat them, and expect high losses!

I'll still download the demo, which should be available around Oct 3rd, and will be in the next PCGamer magazine. But I refuse to buy it until I see how it plays

Think Apocalypse and you have the gameplay right there, just in 3D. I'm not particuarly bothered that you can't enter buildings, anything apart from big building battles are boring IMO, I hated it in Apoc. UFO's are different, you know there are aliens in there but searching around in buildings doesn't=fun to me. I liked the more open maps, or at least outdoors with stuff in the way.

Yeah the 7 man team is shite but it's probably an attempt to make you actually give a damn about the soldiers ( I know I didn't in UFO, "You, rook, run into that building with two alien nades primed for 0 turns and find the bugs for me, yeah?" )

The important stuff is still destructable, if a fence is in the way then u can blow it up. Same with a bush etc, basically the reason is because they don't want you to enter buildings for above stated reasons.

Got nothing to say about bases but ffs :cussing:

Still going to be good I think, just don't expect X-Com 7

I have great hope for this game. The graphics look pretty good. It sounds very much inspired by the great combo of strategy and combat that I loved about XCOM1.

While I loved the original XCOM, I have a hard time with its dated look and I can only play it for a little while before it crashes on my current system. I look forward to a game with modern graphics that might give me even just a taste of the original.

The 7 man squad seems about right to me. Just enough for you to really care about their welfare after they have developed. Apparently, part of the game concept is having to find more people and resources to continue fighting back the alien 'biomass' takeover.

The 'biomass' concept that is presented sounds interesting too. The 'War against the Chtorr' series by David Gerrold may have inspired this. His series is about an alien ecosystem that starts to take over the Earth. I would recommend it for any scifi buffs.

I preordered it! Even if it was the crappiest game in the world (on the level of daikatana :shiver: ) I would still play it, because it is the direct descendant of xcom. At least until xenocide is released. :)

U know, I really want to play Daikatana. Not because I think I would enjoy it but because I want to know what the worst game in the world really is like. It's like a taboo, "OMG, you aren't thinking of buying Daikatana are you? What the heck is wrong with you, man!"

Well, a lot of daikatana was hype. Everyone expected it to be great, with great levels, sounds, gameplay, etc. Especially since it was made by the guy who make quake 1 and 2. However, at best, it is mediocre (bordering on coaster material) and at worst it isn't even worth Peeing on it.
