Hey

I posted a topic about the options 4 the New Game menu, so I did a quick mock up of what it should look like. I haven't added any options or BG's yet this is just the framework based upon Vaaish's start up screen. Just wanted 2 get some opinions if 2 use this or rip it up and start afresh.

This is what I suggest 4 the background, do peeps think it works?

Edit: The BG is just an idea of what it would look like, I just mocked it up as a little rest at what I am doin at the mo, I think there should be like stats of the XC-11 like wingspan etc.

I think you need more buttons then just start, and cancel. Thats the reason of the stuff in the middle.

What else do u need?

Edit: The whole options 4 new game and that will b in the middle BTW, sorry if I didn't make that clear. I've started another post in the Lab about what options there should be but I'll make sure I save the .psd file so it is easy 2 change. If this makes it to Milestone 2 then I suggest not coding in any other buttons other than the Start and Cancel ones as the rest haven't been decided yet and prob won't be 4 a while.

k, I'm gonna add some btn's that I think would b there, bere in mind that the btn's aint been decided and probably will change, so they will b more of place holders than anything.

Edit: How about this?

Edit2: I don't really like the green myself, but it keeps with Vaaish's main screen, so any opins on that would be welcome as well.

i couldn't find a post in the labaratory about this, so i post it here.


It needs:

-a scroll for difficulty _/
-a check for randomized floorplans _/
-a check for tactical saving and loading
-start with selected _/
-cancel _/

Nice, but the background is still dodgy.

Do we have any idea what the actual menu buttons are supposed to be?

I dont like the background, regardless of how it looks when I scroll. Can you make the lines less visible?

As for the buttons, I guess we need either an official answer or a discussion.

OK, the buttons are just there 2 show sorta what they'd look like, they are all just stretched versions of each other so don't worry 2 much about that.

As 4 the lines, I take it u r talking about behind the boxes? Or the whole BG itself? Coz I can change either so let me know. Personally I don't like the whole BG colour, but it keeps 2 what was in the other screens so...

1)Why random founding? it seams cool though.
2)Base name should be, like in the original, chosen when placed.
3)You have sent too many SMS :P....'to', not '2'

edit for 3: oh, i thought it was "you are not allowed 2 save", not "you can only save 2 times"

4) for the letters, i think they blend too much, hard to read...needs sharping.

LOL, I didn't even notice that. The random funding was mentioned at one time, and I thought if u choose ur base name now it could have a default name so u don't always ave 2 choose 1 4 ur first base.

Edit: What u just said is the reason I put it there, I keep spacin 2day :unsure:

thats just 1 more base name, and it is only chosen once per game. No biggie.

I sorta like how mikker did the center piece and I think bouth of you need to work on the backgrounds. Maybe a faded out version of the imagess used on the main screen?

OK, I did mikker's buttons, I'll be honest and say I didn't really like them when I looked at the post, but when I got rid of the BG and added some btn's I was plesently suprised. It reminded me a lot of Starcraft ( which is no bad thing ). I'm not crazy about the ones on the left tho, I think it breaks the style.

BTW, I put a new BG in, this is robbed off a space site so we can't use it but I like the colour scheme and style, I think something simular looking from Mars with Earth where that strange planet would work well, and keep 2 the game's story line. Well, here it is ne way:

Try playing with the right side of the menu, see how something similar to the left side works.

and try a more subdued background :)

Yeah I know, that red really gives u a headache don't it? It's not mine ne way, I was just proposing a simular space scene showing Earth from the Cydonia base ( obviously u wouldn't be able 2 see the base, but...)

I think u mean make the right menu look more like the left menu? I'll try it 2morrow.

not saying that the right side is bad, just want you to branch out a bit and try a few things to see what happens.

Remember not to play yourself into a corner. From what I'm seeing you have a working solution but there are an infinite number of good solutions waiting to be found.

As for the relationship thing, i mean that you can clearly see at the edges, that the lines meet in the gray zone, so it looks like it was just greyscaled in the edges.

However, it doesnt do in my addition in the middle, because i shamelessly ripped it off the edges.

I like this stuff. The only thing I would say is that I think the main buttons are too big. It's heading towards a console feel and away from a tight pc feel.

You should really take a look at the options menu thread where Mamutas is working on the coding. IMO the elements used in all the various dialog boxes should continue through to this menu as well. The button sizes and colors, layout, etc. It will look really out of place if those elements change from one screen to another. There should be a PSD file somewhere that you could use to import pieces into your screen.

I agree with Breunor: this interface looks inconsistent with the current implementation of Geoscape UI (and discussed Baseview and X-Net DB view UIs). It does seem out of place, like from completely other game. Artists need to look on the whole game, not just on one screen.

As for the options, then no single gameplay option was confirmed yet to be included in the game. Also, do not forget that v1 will not have anything significantly different from original game, as for example random UFO floorplans here.

Another thing to keep in mind is the reusability. We are going to provide gameplay options dialogs which could be launched from Geoscape, Battlescape and Baseview screens. They will share number of options (I guess, cause again, nothing is defined yet), so it will be nice to reuse that same dialog code and art while presenting the options in the beginning of the game.

Again, we need to look at the whole picture: all aspects of the game, not a single screen.

I have attached a document I started to write for milestone 2. It has a screen flow which we will target. It is just a draft so far, but me and RK has pretty much agreed on it already.

Firstly I don't see why the options shouldn't be added 2 v1.0 as they are very trivial. Secondly, maybe they should be a little closer but honestly I could come up with many examples of much further start screens to game screens. Just my opinion tho.

The start screens should have some elements from the game interface but should in no wise be exactally the same. Elements such as buttons and the greenscreen can be implemented in the main menu/start new game/ load game screens etc but the rest of the interface features weren't designed to fill a screen w/o extra geometry. I believe it will be close enough to keep the bars on the top and bottom and the background image w/o strtaying too far. For continuity we keep the same color scheme, buttons, and where possible the options screen style backgrounds for the center portion of the screen.

Firstly, I am not the artist. I do not have a final word on the textures and colors, some other people do. I expressed my concerns as a coder and I think they are valid.
Secondly, the options could be added if senior team says so. I just stated, that current direction is to be as close to the original as possible in v1.

I did not say it will not be used in V1. I said, stick to the options which existed in original game.

I suggest you to create a screen with placeholders for different option controls, which we will fill later. That would be the safest way to proceed now.

I think we misunderstood each other. I was not saying we should change the menu options I was trying to say that the diferance between the look of main screen and in game interface shouldn't be a problem so long as there were still elements that tied them together.
