Captain Virgil annihilates Cyberdisk in two shots with Heavy Plasma. On the previous turn, dropped a Sectoid in a dark tunnel with an aimed shot.

My command staff are -scary-, man!

A brave rookie stepped out of the lift, saw a Cyberdisk, killed it with his heavy plasma. Alas, he died, but the explosion took out another Cyberdisk.

a lone sectoid in the engineering section of a small UFO somehow managed to take out 5 of my 8 man team. I only killed him by putting a grenade against the other side of the wall he was standing against.

The thing I most remember is my first base assault, I brought 10 men some with Powersuits other with Personalarmor. Both had ether a HeavyPlasma or LaserRifle.

The base was run by SnakeMen, only 3 men survived but we won. The best thing was when the snakemen started to panick including their leader. First he went baserk and killed some of his men, then He panicked right before I entered the command center and ran right into my three men.

First time I ever saw aliens panic, I'll never forget it.

The second thing I remember is a trip to bagdad (terror mission) it was snake men again (easy I thought) but this was before I new their terror unit.

it was in the dpths of a dreadnaught , i was getting crushed and my men were all having fits. Until my commander , Jawn stepped up to the plate. It was really quite commical , he had a plasma rifle and he manged to drop 3 hidden aliens with an autoshot (one took a poke at him you see , the other two just happened to be nearby) , then another alien walked out the door and shot , missed and stood there. And then his alien buddies came to back him up - guess what? chalk another alien up for my commander :) . Finally , just when you think that all the action is over , the aliens end thier turns. There were 3 of them standing down a corridoor , two in a doorway and one right down the end - they all ate plasma. I was stunned. - Needless to say Jawn got the first suit of flying armour.

It was an ownage. I had one guy with very low psi strength and 7 better guys.
Next to the guy with low psi, there were chryssalid and sectoid. And what happened ?

He gone berserk. And shot three plasmas. First hit chryssalid, second sectoid, and third chryssalid. Two kills by BERSEREK.

Just got finished a mission in which I would like to call "Mishaps and Blunders".

This actually started out with My American Base spotting a Large UFo. The Interceptors, though powerless againt that sorta firepower at the moment chased it as it flew across the Altlantic Ocean. Lose track of the UFO and I tell the Interceptors to fly towards Egypt since it was heading in the direction. They get there, nada nothing, and they are heading back when up pops A Terror Mission...Bupapest under attack!

14 men, 1 Captain, 2 Sergeants, a Couple Squaddies and Rookies. Laser Tech is currently under development and so I have 3 Laser Pistol guys, 7 Rifle guys, 1 Heavy Cannon guy, 1 Auto Cannon Guy, 1 RL Girl (who is the Sergeant). Laser Pistol guys also have Stun Rods.

So First Soldier gets deployed, oh joy! A reaper sitting next to a warehouse door. Prime Grenade, toss at it's feet, Ignore Reaper. Second guy gets out, and sees a Floater in the park south of the landing site. Now let me just say that all throughout this entire game, this X-com squad has about the worst Accuracy I've probably ever seen. They could not hit the broadside of a barn when it depended on it.

In anycase Almost the entire squad of people who got off the ship shot at the alien and only one managed to actually hit it! So At end of turn I say "well if someone dies they deserve it in a way". End Turn, Grenade explodes, Reaper dead.

The Floater decides to turn around and shoot at am off screen civilian instead. He misses. But then I hear some other civilian buy it. Then my turn.

So finally end up hitting the Floater, but he's knocked unconcious. So then I Start moving people out, first going to scope out the warehouse. End of turn.

During alien's turn I see one in a house that is Southeast of the landing zone and directly east of the park. he shoots off a bomb at a civvy trying to leave the house but only ends up knocking the guy out. Ok, so alien with explosives = bad news. Start moving people in position. In the meanwhile the other squad moves east and enters the large warehouse. No aliens inside.

Also A Reaper is sitting in between the house I saw the Floater in and a store. The Store is actually between that house and the warehouse, for logistics. A Floater appears right above the Reaper's head and starts shooting at me but misses. I rocket the reaper and then suprisingly manage to kill the Floater.

So now we get to the Hijinks.

The Warehouse is empty, but on the far side there are three civilians by the far door. Unfortunatly as I had just walked in a Reaper walks in the other way. So there he is, a mere square away from 3 civvies. I shoot, desperatly, trying to kill it before the next turn. They do manage to hit hit a few times, even one of the laser soldiers hits it a few times. (Almost ended up hitting a civvie as well during this exchange.)

So next I figure It might be a bad idea to approach the house where the floater is, so I decide to try and Fire a rocket at the window. Even if it hit the wall, it would give the soldiers an opportunity to gun down the Floater. Fire the rocket. It hits a fence where two of my soldiers are standing and kills them instantly. (One of them was the other Sergeant).

Sonnuva..

So then the soldier with the Auto Cannon is standing next to the warehouse wall. I decide to try and shoot the wall so he can possible walk in and try for the Reaper. Cept' this time the game loaded the Auto Cannon with explosive ammo. You can prolly guess the result.

So now 3 people are down and I'm thinking this sucks. End Turn. And yes it was now the aliens turn to make themselves look bad. Since the Reaper was standing midway in the door, The Floater across the street shot at the civilians inside and ended up blasting the Reaper in the back, killing it before it could even do anything. Next In the blackness I see an explosion break out and hear an alien dying.

Resound to see this sillyness to the end, I continued.

Floater in park wakes up, Laser Girl is nearby so she Stun rods his carcass. Pick up his weapons and leave him there. The second Auto Cannon guy walks up to the window of the house and sees the Floater walking out the front door. Manage to actually pluck him in the back, but he doesn't die so I move him out of the window. The people on the park can't see the Floater because there is not only a tree but the front door blocking the view.

Other soldiers manage get through the alley and onto the street and see the Floater who had shot the Reaper. Manage to down him.

Next turn, guy goes up to window again, sees Floater turned around and takes a fws hots and misses. Floater Turns but can't fire and the next round from the soldier ends his days.

But oh what next? Finally manage to get to the last builing on the bottom right hand corner of map. When I First see it, I find the west wall of the store completly gone and a Floater and civilian standing next to each other gawking at the soldier. There was another alien dead in the debris.

Seeing as how an alien and a civvie are just standing there and I have not heard shots for severa' turns, I don't fire and watch the proceedings. The alien turns around and starts hauling serious orb! A laser pistol soldier is just across the street, so I pull out her Stun Rod and she starts hauling after it. My other soldiesr cover her as she chases the alien. As she gives chase to it on the south side of it, another Floater appears on the North side. End turn.

The Floater on the north side doesn't fire at my soldiers, so I assume he's unarmed. My next turn, The Squaddie Girl chases down the floater and stuns it. Then I figure to do the same with the other one. Except... he turns out to be armed. He darts around the east side of the building and shoots the girl, but she survives! The other soldiers try desperatly to shoot the alien to no avail. So with nothing else to do, she charges up and Stuns the Floater. Except he doesn't go down. Crap. I look at the options. She has just enough TUs left to get off a Snap Laser pistol shot! Point blank she shoots! Hits! Alien goes down, but doesn;t die! I capture him anyway!

End Turn! Mission ends. She's off to the hospital. Mission ends up being a GOOD rating, with only 2 out of 8 Civvies dead. 3 X-com people dead, none of which killed by the aliens.

In fact, with this game, I think the entire record of casulties due to freinly fire is actually higher then people killed by aliens. See they can hit something...

I'm noticing that you have a strong tendency to just make stuff up. The maximum a soldier's attributes can increase after a single mission is a roll of 2-6. A mediocre soldier who clears an entire base by himself is just going to be slightly less mediocre after that. If a soldier is really buff after a mission, he was pretty close to that point before the mission as well. Attribute increases don't scale in a linear fashion with battlefield performance, they stop getting better after 11 instances of a particular primary combat action, such as shooting an alien or taking a reaction shot. If you want to tell believable lies to impress people, you need to understand the underlying game mechanics a little better so you don't end up saying something that is obviously untrue. Your claim that a 220 psi skill & 2 psi strength soldier was excellent at mind control and easily resisted mind control attempts by four Ethereal Commanders is another prime example.

You don't need to make stuff up. It just hurts your credibility and bothers people who don't like being lied to, which happens to include just about everybody.

I remember when i first played X-Com i was doing good until a early sectoid base assault but its was a base with no tactical placment and i was have 14 rookies with no armor and rifles...

So i send a man out looks north cyberdisc so the next 5 turns was a bunch of unarmored rifle rookies being owned by a cyberdisc shooting at it hitting it but doing no damage :ar15: i was wondering what was happening before i learnt rifles cant do anything to cyberdiscs so i decide to take cover in a general store end turn
Next turn he pops out one sectoid and 2 cyberdiscs chargind out of the acces lift vs 8 rookies in a undefencable base with rifles while 6 remaining rookies fought sectoids far far away

After that game i decided to research plasma weapons and laser wepons and use them at all times while having a distinct fear of cyberdiscs until i decided to use to test my rifles againt a new green thing aka Muton at least i learned about the crappiness of rifles and the importance of choke points

10 rookies vs 1 cyberdisc = Survival for 3-6 turns
1 squaddie testing a rifle vs new muton = selling the rifles

Floater base assault: My guys went down the access lift, and saw a floater and a reaper down the hall. So I fire a blaster bomb at them. When the explosions stop, I see no less than six bodies laying there. I finish deploying my troops, and end my turn. I then get greeted by this very welcome message: FLOATER LEADER HAS GONE BERSERK. *sound of plasma fire* *sound of lots of explosions* *sound of lots of aliens dieing* "MISSION SUCCESS" screen.

Shortest base assault mission I've ever done, needless to say ^_^
Justice will be dispensed by cannonade and cutlass, and all manner of remorseless pieces of metal.

Since I can't remember the details, I can only wonder how once, a (presumably) berserk soldier standing a single square away managed to hit the ground under the alien's feet, and 5 or 6 squares surrounding it.

My ipenatatrable fortress named Earth:
Game difficulty Veteran-
1/2 way through the month of Sept. And I have really bothered to capture any commanders from their battleship escorts. There is no alien base on my Earth.
But now I have a slight problem.
Muton battle-ship has landed in indonesia. In central Aus. I have the Commander of XCOM army 'ready to deploy' in a lightning craft. Up and to the west in Columbo is an Avenger craft with hotshot rookies.. Hand picked.
I want to take this Commander and get to cydonia, but whenever I land on the ship it either blacks out or shuts-down.
I will get them!
Here, you try =)

Oh yeah, and this message will self-destruct.. NKF DID YOU RECEIVE MY UPLOAD FROM HERE?

I can't remember anything as insane as some of your stories but i did have one whan I was clearing a crash site and I put my soldiers out to look for the crash and the first soldier to find the crash happened to be the one with the best beggining reactions on my team so i hunkered him down behind a fence and waited a turn with some time units left, i was planning to move my other soldiers to the crash before assaulting it.

During the aliens turn a sectoid came out the ship and was killed by a reaction shot from my kneeling guy. moved my other soldiers then ended the turn. Another exiting sectoid killed, this went on for a bunch of turns as I tried to get him help for the assault. Wasn't necessary he killed them all as they tried to leave the ship. I don't think I even needed to kill any outside the ship. I was was grinning very much after that mission.

...

I had another one where the first mission was a very small with an ethereal and i sent all my rookies into close quarters as fast as I could, with stun rods. I lost a few soldiers but took the alien alive and managed to study him and got psionics some time later, that was the earliest I ever scored psionics in any of my games it was worth the few dead soldiers for the greater good :)

The weirdest thing would have been when sectoids landed in my base and I killed half a cyberdisc. Then I sent a soldier in to stun the other half (with a stun rod). It never died, or became unconscious.. :(

I had my first Superhuman Snakeman terror mission the other day: in clear defiance of Murphy's Law, it was in daylight. Having lots of experience at lesser difficulty levels, and having read lots of advice here, I planned to be very cautious. I had 14 troopers: 2 heavy-weapons specialists with rockets (and four extra rockets in the Skyranger), four sharpshooters (60+ accuracy) with laser rifles, and the rest with laser pistols.

I got lucky with the daylight, and again when the Skyranger landed in an open field with buildings at a little distance. I took my time deploying and killed three or four snakemen and two or three chryssalids at a distance. Got everyone out with a nice perimeter and slowly edged the perimter outwards, having first utterly destroyed the lower level of a house with lots of rockets and high-explosive, to keep anyone from sneaking up on me. I cleared the entire map with no causalities , except one poor guy who walked around the corner and got hit by reaction fire from a snakeman who promptly died to sniper fire. It was a little unsettling how well it was going, considering that it was a snakeman terror site.

So, the entire map is swept. Must be only one alien left, somewhere. Where have I not looked? And then a chryssalid drops through a hole in the floor of the house and head for the Skyranger. He's been hiding up there for dozens of turns, watching my guys walk below and pass him. He bites the first guy he sees and continues on to bite the heavy-weapons specialist who was relaxing by the nosewheel, idly playing with the mind probe because he'd shot all his rockets and there were no spare guns.

The other heavy-weapons guy was counting his lucky stars that he'd drawn the short straw to pick up the one dead trooper's gun. Everyone else re-oriented towards the Skyranger and sent the rawest rookie forward to get visual contact with the Chryssalid and the zombies. She was shaking so bad she couldn't hold her gun steady, but she found them. It took most of the remaining troopers to shoot all three of them. And still, the mission was not over.

Back to the house: must be some alien still hiding on the second floor. Wait, it's a THREE story house! And I have no more rockets and only three Hi-X packs left. So I start shooting holes in the walls and throwing my three packs into the holes. Nobody is on the second floor: third floor, I get a glimpse of a chyrssalid and a zombie, but they moved away and I couldn't get a shot.

Next turn, they decided the game was up and jumped from the third story. The chryssalid bit a rookie (the one who lucked out with the scouting earlier and my lone remaining HW guy, whose lucky rabbit's foot had apparently worn out. The other nine troopers, who all have line of sight, start shooting and get two of them. The last zombie runs up to a trooper and stops. She decides to see what happens when you hold down the trigger on a laser pistol. Fired nine times at point-blank range into the zombie and then into the chryssalid, and it fell down dead.

Nineteen dead aliens (and a 2.5 hour mission: my wife came downstairs to see why I hadn't come to bed yet)! And one captured chryssalid: not sure how he survived. No citizens lived but I got a good score. Sorry about the house, citizens. And the gas station. And all the dead people. But on the bright side: no aliens!
