Has anybody tried tunneling in the ufo monster ship recovery mission? It has 3 megaspawns camping at the door. I tunnel so I can shoot 6-8 missiles at them.

I luv tunneling. One of my favorite tactics is to camp agents around the "turboshaft" that larger UFOs have. When the aliens are expecting to hide there while they fight your guys at the enterance, you've got deadly snipers already inside!

My first order of business: Homeless people make cheap rookies, and are great at opening UFO doors. Heck, they're so cheap, I'm going to replace all personel with them!
Secondly: This organisation takes too much money to run. Weapon shipments will come from Siberia from now on. Costly maintenance is to be cut on all facilities. That includes venting.
Thirdly: We have a new colonel. His name is Facehugger, he loves aliens, and I want you all to treat him with respect.
Lastly: I'll be in my condo on an undisclosed island, if you need me. Good day.

I found that the best way for me to get in UFOs other than the doors is to destroy the UFO weapons and make a hole there. Can be done with powerswords easy.

I don't find too many situations where I have to tunnel through walls, but I have used power swords and devestators to cut through large blocks in order to make safe bunkers where my troops can rest in the alien dimension. For large groups of soldiers, it's a bit of a waste of time considering how quickly you can finish the missions, but it's something I still make them from time to time. Unfortunately the aren't that many areas in the alien dimension that allow this.

I also cut through walls when it's faster to do that than to run to an actual door. I do this mostly in the cult temples, although there are many times I felt that I needed a closer doorway in the almost maze-like sensovision recording sets and grav-ball stadiums. I avoid this as I don't wan't to ruin my public relations with them, but it is certainly tempting.

Making a small alcove in a straight wall can give you a corner for soldiers to use their auto-strafe mode when set to normal disposition.

As mentioned by others, cutting through the disrupter gun arrays on UFOs can give you alternate entrances. That's useful when you want to attack them from different directions.

I simply prefer to do a SWAT style siege at both doors and slug it out when they decide to so their yellow bellies.

I find tunneling very useful, since I usually only bring 4-6 agents on a mission (alien dimension excepted, but even there I typically only use 8-10 agents).

Got a bunch of aliens heading for your squad, and no way you can win? Carve yourself a nice long tunnel out of the wall, and set up your agents on the other side. Then wait a few minutes...it doesn't hurt to set a few prox mines off in the tunnel, either, if there's enough room.

 tunneling

yeah, if you see a ton of aliens running towards you tunneling can save your life. It can also be a life saver when you're being overrun... ambushes FTW

what you do is if you see a bunch of aliens coming (this works particularly well against cloaked aliens and aliens with dimension rockets), you dig a hole maybe 2 or 3 squares into a wall, go full auto, and blow the aliens away as they walk by. Cloaks are ineffective at those ranges, and aliens won't fire dimension missiles at enemies that are too close(at least i'm pretty sure they won't)
the only problems are shielded skeletoids with entropy missiles, which tend to get a single shot off before they too are shredded. also never put two tunnels facing each other and attempt to catch an alien in the crossfire. if both agents go prone and duo devastators its possible they will aim up and therefore avoid hitting each other, but if they're standing then your shields will be roasted after the first alien. Friendly fire is deadly in this game.

Alien destroyer= hill
Hill+disruptor/devastator fire= E-Z firing emplacements
E-Z firing emplacements = lots of dead skeletoids
:)

Only problem is that if you just have people tunneling, skeletoids will flank you... So you have to stick a couple around the hill, and they kill everything before you finish digging :(

Have a single digger.. give him 6 power swords or whatever you feel you need, Honestly, it works out very well.
I run out of ammo on the sword? Switch and recharge!
I of course enjoy tunneling Quickly, so its rapid fire and a series of recharge.

What exactly is this "tunneling"? I have never heard of it before. I presume, from the replies here, that it is attacking the walls with power swords. That is the correct weapon to use? I will try it out!

Disruptor guns and Devastator Cannons work as well too, its basically digging into the walls and walking into the space you have just made.

I figured it out when I was using rapid fire instead of aiming back in nooby days ^_^

It's something I used to do on the Battleship recovery missions, but I found that several agents with cloaks and toxin guns can usually take down a Megspawn before it can fire off dimension missiles. Still, it's a great out-of-the-box tactic, and one that deserves praise in the game to make it fun and new. Going "standard" is indeed a great way to win XCOM, and a laudable one, but using creative tactics keeps the game fresh and really opens it up when we share our ideas.

I certainly knock a hole in a wall in the temples or a bldg when I need quick routes for escape and reinforcement. I'll often make quick doors near my teams (if the area on the other side is covered by another team - I don't want more axes of attack) and a preparatory measure. Certainly, if the wallbuster worked, it would be great to breach a hole in the hull of a ship (the battleship recovery always has a hole at the top left of the map) and storm in.

I like these inventive ideas. Keep 'em coming!

Ive also found that if you really NEED to block off an entrance, just dig out the ground a few squares, the guys wont be able to get through, although they can still shoot across.
Sadly due to limits of ground.. this isnt always possible XD
