Which ammo exactly, and how much, does the base level Coelacanth with gas cannon take? Just downloaded off of Steam, and haven't played since the game came out! I've ordered everything I can think of, and nothing seems to be right, or enough.

Solid Harpoon Bolts. It's the item right under the Coelacanth/Gas Cannon in the purchase screen. You will need 30 rounds to be able to put it on the Triton. Enjoy.

I'm not sure why, it has exactly the same stats as the cannon tank in UFO, with the only real difference being +10 more damage, but I find it so much more useful than the tank in UFO. Might be the aesthetics. ;)

Thank you! I had ordered them, but not enough of them. All is well now.

let me add some agruments to what NKF said:

I use Coalacanth / Solid harpoon bolts instead of Coalacanth / Torpedoes
mainly because they also work on land missions

underwater restriction makes other weapons less useful too
( ie. torpedo launcher )
