Well, if you have the dos version of the game, and are using DOSbox to play, then that functionality is built into DOSbox...(at least, it is in version 0.65, not sure about earlier versions...)

Just open your DOSbox.conf file and find the section labeled [render]

the value for "scaler=" can be set with several options...the default is none, or normal2x, but there are several other options listed in the comments just below the section label. Try advinterp2x, advmame2x, or one of the others listed...

You can also try setting aspect=true, but if your hardware doesn't fully support it, it can really, REALLY, SSSLLLOOOOWWW you down

These settings do increase the load on your computer, so if its barely managing anyway, then don't bother, but if you have a fairly robust system, then give 'em a try!

For reference, I'm running an Athlon64 2.8Ghz with 512mb of hyperthreaded DDR ram, and I run it at 20000 cycles, which is maybe a hair faster than XCOM was on my 486 back in the day...but I'm showing less than 30% peak load on the CPU in the monitor (and thats typically when the game is switching between the geoscape and the battlescape)...I could obviously run it faster, but truthfully the reason I like XCOM on DOSbox is because I can get it to run at something less than warp speed (the ONLY thing I like about how fast the CE version runs on that computer is when I need to assign all 250 engineers to a project...I just click on the up arrow for about 1 sec!!) LOL

thanks a lot ;) after searching and learnig a few things on net i've found couple of useful thingies ;) first of all upgraded dosbox version with added hq2x scalling that looks really amazing, and in the beginning,it run really nasty, but after spending 3h with the config file i managed to make it run smoothly with smth about 45000 cycles :P now i only have to solve that little stuttering sound problem, but it's a minor dissadvantage ,thanks again for a little guidance into the subject ;)

No problem, always glad to help, especially someone willing to follow through on their own! :D

For the stuttering sound, you might try increasing the prebuffer setting under [mixer]...also, you could try disabling all sound devices except the one you use (usually soundblaster for soundFX, mpu401 for music)

BTW, for anyone else following this, the hq2x setting is not one enabled for the default DOSbox setup...you will need to patch it. The patch I use came from gulikoza (http://www.si-gamer.net/gulikoza), since he is the guy developing Direct3D and other advanced rendering support for DOSbox. However, there are several places/people to get a patch from (do a search for DOSbox patch hq2x or look here(scroll down the page a bit...))

amon deep, where did you get the patch you're using? I ask because gulikoza's patch includes the coreswitch module for DOSbox that automatically adjusts the cycles on the fly, keeping your game running smoothly without hogging all of your CPU (assuming, of course, that your hardware is capable; sounds like yours is ^_^ )

frankly i dont remember from where i got it ;p somwhere on vogons i think, there was a link to another page ... well it is v0.63+ highly upgraded ,i've tried yours but somehow couldnt get the hq2x to work properly - in cfg i changed to hq2x,but it still looked like advmame or sumthin similiar ... i tried couple of combinations with direct3d and scallers and nothing ...

so i still use "my" version - hq2x is much more "clearer" than others ... and whats all about that coreswitch ? is it somehow enabled in cfg ? sorry, but im not much of a specialist in programming and stuff so i rather prefer to ask, then pretend i know smth :P ;) is there some other way to speed up emulation with hq2x than with cycles ? because the higher you go with cycles, the sound sttuters more ... and finally maybe you could send me on my mail - [email protected] - an optimised version of your dosbox that works fine with hq2x and that coreswitch stuff on :P i would be grateful :) my spec is - A64 1.8 1gb ram,rad 9550 ;)

also i have a question about the clicking sound i have this problem when i click on for an example reaserch,or anything else that makes this sound (the main sound when you click on something, anything almost - you now it ;) it leaves behind "crackling" ,also when im underwater this crackling is looped all the time,it doesnt spoil the game, but i would like to solve it somehow,if you know something about it - let me know also :)

Well, the patch that I use (gulikoza's) requires v0.65...and from what I've read, the patch you're using may look a little better than the one I use. The older implementation of hqNx was not fully compliant with all hardware (it was designed for Radeon-based graphics chips, which is why it works well for you ^_^ )

Gulikoza's patch uses a newer implementation of hqNx that is fully compliant (so far as I know), but is not quite as optimized for your hardware, so it may not look quite as nice...but the coreswitch module is very nice as well (if you use gulikoza's patch, coreswitch is automatically enabled if you set core=dynamic under [CPU] in DOSbox.conf), as it will change cycles on the fly, raising it when needed, lowering it when not, and preventing DOSbox from maxing out your CPU and causing problems with background processes. This can really help sound, because as you have noticed, the higher the cycles, the more likely you'll have sound problems. Finally, gulikoza's patch also includes some optimization for sound, so it might help there as well.

Its also worth noting that DOSbox v0.65 is a good bit faster than previous versions, in my experience. You could try installing the newer version (in my experience, you CAN install multiple versions of DOSbox on your computer...my old box had v0.60, v0.61, and v0.63 installed and could run any of them (by default, different versions install into different folders.))

If you would rather not install the newer version, then try tweaking the prebuffer setting under [mixer] in DOSbox.conf...also, try disabling any sound devices that you don't use (like gravis ultrasound, tandy, CMS, disney, etc.)

ok i've done it all ... i compared the two versions ,and i don't seem to find a big difference in performance ,apart from a far better looking hq2x on 0.63 - i've turned off all the unnecessary devices, tweaked prebufer a little bit ^_^ and it's better now ... or so it seems

one thing i observed, is that UFO Defence runs far more faster than TFTD when you run them in Dosbox with hq2x - maybe because of the bigger maps in TFTD,because particulary there's a little difference in anything else between them (the slowest are the terror maps in TFTD - especially ship attacks, when you scroll the map on the highest deck - it's not a nuisance as the terror (and especially ship missions) are rare to encounter, but it's a weird feeling :P and it happens with hq2x on,off, hardware scalers, advmame, on 0.65,0.63 whatever :P) apart from that everything is fine and i really enjoy the hq2x in both games now :D it looks just like antyaliasing in 3D games, and since you have a quite powerful rig - i would recommend you to try the version I use ,because the hq2x in this version looks far more better then in gulikoza's - out of the league ^_^

anyways, thx for the help and I hope that this topic will be useful to anyone with such problems/desires to run UFO and TFTD with improved quality :) after all ... these are among the best titles of all time =b

BTW - OMG how many smileys !!! :-P sorry for that ;D

Ohh ,and sorry I haven't read carefully - it's all about the hardware compliance you say ... hmm ... guess your right - as I've said, I'm not a specialist in this area, but I guess that you could try the version I use anyway - maybe it'll work and look fine
