Make The Forum Less Restrictive

itworks

Recommended Posts

I guess you have all noticed, that this forum is not exactly full of life. I think one reason is the "keep out"-mentality. Guests cannot even read the majority of topics! It feels very much like a big "you're not welcome - fu*k off".

You guys should ease the regime. Make the forum atleast readable to guests.

Guest Azrael Strife
He is right about guests not even being able to read some of the X-Com forums, a lot of people (myself included) sometimes just go away when a forum forces registration when I just try to read a thread.

What are we unallowing them to see anyway? We don't even allow for games download, even if creators back up that idea!

Where did you even get that???

You know, I had no idea what he was talking about, but I just figured out he was talking about abandonware. I'll try to explain:

gufu, although they back up that idea, legally their word is worth nothing. Since Take Two owns the rights to X-COM they have every right to say that it's not freeware. And even if this site did allow that, are you sure this would be a good idea? Think about something else for a moment. Rumors have been going around about a new X-COM game. Let's assume for a moment that they are correct. Now put yourself in the position of the decision maker in Take Two. How would you get something to base the sales of such a hypothetical sequel on? Well, quite simple. You rerelease one of the old games and see how many people are going to buy it. It's not fullproof, but you can draw some conclusions. And lo', Take Two did in fact rerelease both UFO and TFTD. And Game Informer reported that TFTD was selling well.

Guests cannot view General Xcom Discussion for example. I agree with Azrael that it's really a big turn-off for people to have to register in order to view forums. It was certainly a discouragement when I first came only to be able to see the tech-support forums.

Well, I recently registered, and I wouldn't have bothered if it wasn't restricted. ^_^

As a guest I could still see the "help" topics, and I assume that's what most people want. Why flood a forum with registered users that are only here to find answer to one question and are then never heard from again? I'm not much of a forum-writer usually (more of a "reader"), but since I enjoy the x-com games so much I pretty much had to join. Only time will tell how active I will dare to be. ^_^

Oh, and since this is my very first post: A big thank you to everyone who has contributed to this forum! Five distorted alien thumbs up for you! WTF

And now we're getting a FPS XCOM rape thanks to the people who bought the originals of ancient games made by a defunct developers instead of torrenting them.

Let it be a lesson to those who apply ethical sentiments to the world of gaming industry.

Thanks for the heads up / reminder about the permissions. We relaxed a lot of them some time ago but because of the gazillion subforums, we didn't do all of them. Now I have enabled reading and attachment downloading permissions for everyone for the xcom, xcom-inspired, ufo2000, and all other project forums and subforums.

If I missed any, please let me know.

I usually don't read msgs that are in all caps so if you said something about it, I didn't read it.

Freedom of speech has to do with restrictions on what the government can stop you from saying or doing, not what you can say or do on a privately owned forum. When it comes right down to it, you have essentially zero rights here. I don't mean to sound crass but maybe bluntness is what you need.

Maybe a sense of humor is what you need. Unless... you were joking too...

I thought at first that you did get it.

All of the above 3 posts of mine was a joke.

"I usually don't read msgs that are in all caps so if you said something about it, I didn't read it."

- That is because(as i said!) it was through email. not a thread.

And yes you did read it and answered me through email. Maybe you don't remember. (skin texture...?)

edit: here, i edited the message so it contains the correct grammer with correct capitals and pancutations, so you won't give an excuse for not reading it. (this is also a joke...incase you didnt get that one either)

Hi, from https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/1103978921643...sts/QJMA9grE1UM

Darren Stults - I'd like to ask if anyone knows why after I created a new account on the forum yet never have been able to post anything or reply to anything? I even completely filled out my personal data, but that still hasn't seemed to work?

Is there really some kind of problem or forum misconfiguration for new users?

If I'm not mistaken new users are manually granted access by those with the right level of administrative permissions. Not sure if that's being done regularly at the moment. I recommend sending Micah or Stewart a PM.
