Server seems to be working fine.

Where you trying to log in as anonymous? Because there can only be 1 anonymous player on the server. And you don't need to go to the site to register, simply put a username and a password and it will immediately register you. Edited by Hobbes

He might be behind a very restrictive firewall.

Looks like that.
In the folder, every time I run ufo200-srv it says something about a trojan, but it's probably trying to connect to the server?
No, ufo2000-srv just starts to accept connections, so the clients (ufo2000.exe) can connect to it and play games. You don't need to run ufo2000-srv unless you want to play with your friends on LAN. The same ufo2000-srv (but compiled for FreeBSD) runs on lxnt.info (actually there are two instances of ufo2000-srv running, one uses TCP port 2000, another uses port 2001), so it accepts connections from people all over the world who want to play on the Internet.

When you run the game and select 'connect to internet server' option in the main menu, the game tries to connect lxnt.info on TCP port 2000 (or 2001 for beta versions). If you have firewall, it might not like that and block this connection attempt. It might even warn you about trojan/spyware activity. From the technical point of view, the game establishes connection with the remote server and exchanges information with it. Technically trojans also make a connection and exchange information over net, but they use the connection to send your confidential information to their master. As firewalls are not clever enough to analyze network traffic, they can't see the difference between ordinary network game and a trojan, so it probably thinks that it is safer to block the connection. But it should be possible to configure firewall to allow ufo2000.exe to make connections with server lxnt.info on TCP ports 2000 and 2001.

PS. To those who are paranoid - the game does not send to the server any information not related to playing the game, so it is not a trojan or any kind of spyware. The game collects some statistics, but this statistics is related to ufo2000 world only (used maps, weapon sets popularity and similar information). The only exception is your operating system version as this information helps much in tracking bugs. Also the game sends crashreports to the server on errors in order to simplify getting some insights to the developers about the remaining problems and their priority. A summary of this information is available on http://ufo2000.lxnt.info/results.php and http://ufo2000.lxnt.info/results-beta.php (well, it will be available once the problems with the webserver get resolved). Anyway, the source code for the game is available, so anyone can inspect it.

I am running into this problem as well. However, this only occurs on my Red Hat 9 Linux. I attempted shutting off all firewalls yet it immediately tells me "failed to connect to server". I am beginning to wonder if the server thinks my OS doesn't exist... Edited by Kratos
